NBC confirmed on Thursday (July 15) that Amy Ryan will return this season as Holly -- and writer/executive producer/cast member Paul Lieberstein says she'll be making much more than just a token appearance.

Lieberstein tells Zap2it that Ryan will appear in a whopping eight episodes. That's right: you'll get to see the Holly-Michael magic for a full third of the season.

Also, a few plot details for the upcoming season;

Spoiler:
- Dwight's (Rainn Wilson) efforts to buy the building that houses Dunder Mifflin were successful, which Lieberstein says will result in the salesman/beet farmer becoming overworked and open up new avenues for Jim (John Krasinski) to pull pranks.

- Bates will return as Jo in the season premiere, but she's also starring in NBC's midseason series "Harry's Law," so Lieberstein isn't sure if she'll be able to do more than that.

- Jo's son (who hasn't been cast yet) will come to Dunder Mifflin as part of a series of "low-level" jobs he's doing at various units of Sabre.

- Andy (Ed Helms) will perform in a community theater production. "We think it will be 'Sweeney Todd,'" Lieberstein says.

- We'll let Lieberstein describe the last one himself: "Michael gets a cold sore, and he finds out that's [a form of] herpes, so he feels the need to call every woman he's ever been with and inform them."

That last plot point sounds like it could provide not only some good comedy, but also guest spots for some characters we haven't seen in a while.

Full story at zap2it
The last plot point sounds like classic Office. I'm looking forward to it already.

Both spoilers sound good to me. This could be a great upcoming season!

Report one of the following...

I am definitely taking over from Steve Carell on The Office. Yes, I have been asked to take over as the new boss at Dunder Mifflin. I said yes. They made me an offer I just couldn't refuse. I will once again play David Brent and I take over next season. I can't wait. Steve Merchant and I will also write and direct. I will remain Executive Producer.

or...

I'm not taking over from Steve Carell and will just continue to make millions for doing fuck all because I created the show and all the characters, and own the format and it's being syndicated now and I get paid every time any episode of any version is played anywhere in the world, and I stopped my version at its height and I don't think I can improve on that, and I don't want to go back to that and get up at 6am every day of the week for 7 years.

Only one of these is true. I don't know which one to believe. What would you do if you were me?

As a fan of the UK version, I do not want to see Gervais step in as David Brent, ever.

Ricky Gervais could be the only reason to get me to watch after Steve Carell leaves.

Re: Steve Carell says next season of The Office will "probably be my last"

Here's some great guest casting news:

Spoiler:
Michael Scott has had many opponents in recent years, but this season he will get an adversary worthy of a duel at sunset. Timothy Olyphant (FX's Justified) joins The Office for at least two episodes as a salesman who's just a little too good at his job. "He steals clients away from Jim and Michael and Dwight, so they have a little sting set up," Paul Lieberstein, the show's writer and producer who also plays Toby, tells TV Guide Magazine. "They set up a fake company to see what his secret is."

Kenny Powers no, but Murray? Heck yes! I would love if Murray took over.

The Office‘s short list of possible replacements for Steve Carell just got a little longer.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers of the NBC hitcom have quietly reached out to rising comic-actors Danny McBride (the breakout star of HBO’s hilarious Eastbound & Down) and Rhys Darby (late of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords) to gauge their interest in joining the cast later this season.

Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein confirms that they’re “having discussions” about introducing a new salesman into Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, but he wouldn’t say whether this person was being groomed to necessarily replace Carell’s Michael Scott. “We haven’t settled exactly who will take over,” says Lieberstein, adding that promoting a current staffer to the top job remains a viable option as well. (Coexecutive producer Mindy Kaling recently endorsed Rainn Wilson’s Dwight for the gig.)

Recruiting McBride could prove difficult considering that HBO just renewed Eastbound & Down for a second season. “Danny is very happy on Eastbound & Down,” confirms his spokesperson.

Darby, on the other hand, is a free agent now that HBO has grounded Conchords. Reps for the New Zealand-born funnyman were unavailable for comment.

I had no idea that Paul Lieberstein (aka Toby) was actually the showrunner for this. I was under the impression that he was just one of the writers I guess.

Murray would be great! I think I would actually prefer him to Steve Carell.

A thousand times yes to casting Rhys Darby. I'd start watching the show again.

Rhys Darby would be a great addition to the cast. He was the lone bright spot from "Yes Man". I think he'd fit in well with that group.

So, wait... Gervais says he owns the format?? Does he get a piece of the other shows that use it like Parks and Recreation and Modern Family, etc?

I hate McBride in the roles i've seen him in, so I hope he ends up nowhere near The Office.

See what happens. But I expect this to be the end of the good Office episodes.

Re: Steve Carell says next season of The Office will "probably be my last"

Nothing I've read lately makes me even remotely excited for the new season. It's been a chore to watch for years and right now (we'll see how I feel in the fall I guess) I don't even plan on watching. I've watched since the beginning but right now I have no problem giving up on this show. Best case I save up some episodes on TiVo and watch them when I have nothing else to do.

Ah, I remember the good old days when everyone was absolutely certain that the American version of "The Office" would suck and be canceled almost immediately. How'd that work out for all the naysayers?

The best thing about ensemble shows is that you can have characters leave, and new ones come in, and the quality can be maintained. "M*A*S*H" and "Cheers" are good examples.

(Oh, and Troy, you're misquoting Woody Allen in your sig. The line is "Don't knock masturbation.")
