George Zimmerman is another topic that could explore Race in America.
Those first three are just tabloid trash (and too white for this cast). They could make for a TV movie (and have), but not enough for a series.
9/11 is too big and broad a topic
Another interesting exploration of race and crime would be the Atlanta Child Killings of Wayne Williams in the 80s

Did I just miss it, or did the show completely skip over Kato's testimony?
I remember it being such a big deal at the time, this goofy freeloader trying to hold it together on the witness stand, and wonder why they didn't at least toss in a few minutes for sheer entertainment value.
Awesome series though. One of the most entertaining shows of all time.

I know a million books, movies, articles etc. have been done on them but a long 10 or 12 episode series could be really good.

I just don't get why Hurricane Katrina. What exactly is the crime they'll be focusing on... the crime against humanity?

2. The show will broaden its definition of “crime.”
When asked about the Katrina theme not being a clear-cut court case like People v. O.J. Simpson, Landgraf told THR that the cabler wasn’t the least bit concerned about it. “It’s not a singular crime in the way that there was a murder or two murders in O.J., but there were a series of pretty serious crimes that took place in and around Katrina,” he said. Murphy, for his part, added: "I want this show to be a socially conscious, socially aware examination of different types of crime around the world. And in my opinion, Katrina was a f—ing crime — a crime against a lot of people who didn’t have a strong voice, and we’re going to treat it as a crime. That’s what this show is all about."

Probably that loony conspiracy theory from Spike Lee and other blacks that the levees were purposely blown up to destroy black neighborhoods.

Late question: who was that idiot reporter who asked Garcetti about hunting for the real killers?
And oh man, that look on Greenwood's face.

Was reading an article about this show's ratings and in the comments section, someone suggested a season about the 2005 Michael Jackson sexual abuse trial. I remember that being a media spectacle.

I'm really late to the party on this one (like many, had no interest in this originally as I watched a ton of the real trial on television), but WOW - this was FANTASTIC.
Sterling K. Brown, Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson and David Schwimmer ALL deserve Emmy nods, and maybe a few more of them as well (Nathan Lane and Bruce Greenwood were also really good). I started watching this last Sunday and finished it in less than a week. I'm probably going to sit down and watch it a second time soon. Just a brilliant job all around...I dare say I liked it better than both seasons of Fargo on FX - high praise indeed.

I went to a baptism last week and one of the church members was a former coroner in the LA area. And come to find out, he was involved in the OJ case (and the Whitney Houston case). I should have asked him more about the OJ case, but it seemed out of place to ask at a baptism event haha

Perhaps loooney, perhaps not, but all I remember was seeing Americans on top of flooded rooftops and nobody giving a shit, so maybe the conspiracy isn't that far a leap.

1. He's obviously guilty
2. He's going to be found innocent (he thought the prosecution was horrible).

Treme was great. Was rewatching some of it last week. Plus the councilman who was arrested for corruption actually played himself on the show. That dude has balls.
Anyway there was an interview with the ACS show runner who said he likes it too/knows it dealt with Katrina.

This week ESPN has been running a five-part 10-hour documentary "OJ: Made in America". It takes a more in-depth look at OJ and puts his rise in context with the long racial animus between African Americans and the LA Police during the period leading up to the murders. Part Three begins with the murders and goes into much more specific detail than the series, and speaks to pretty much everybody that's alive now, or archive footage in the case of Johnny Cochran and others. Personally, I've found the first three parts very compelling.

I agree, it's a great new documentary. Once again, I was going to skip it because "I've seen it all". But I was quickly hooked after watching a few minutes!
When I was watching the LA riots part, I actually forgot I was watching an OJ doc. That segment felt like its own documentary.

I have watched the first 3 parts of OJ: Made in America and its been a brilliant documentary. By the end of the first episode i actually liked the guy (which i never though possible as i always found him a scumbag). By the end of part 2 i had gone back to hating the guy. I love the way it looks at the state of society at the time and other incidents that affected the ongoing issues people had with the LAPD. Its been absolutely fascinating and cannot wait to see the last two parts. I like the FX show, but this is the real deal on that story.

I agree with you. It was impressive on several levels from the acting to the writing to setting the overall mood.
