Some intern is going to be tasked with going through thousands of hours of horrible youtube videos every time a new castmember is being considered.

Howard Stern addressed Gillis controversy on his SiriusXM Satellite show Tuesday."I don't know him, never heard of him," but "NBC of course bailed on him," Stern said.
Comparing it to the NFL standing by players accused of misconduct, Stern said, "I don't know that this kid couldn't have been told 'the stuff you did was unacceptable, do you feel you could grow from this and offer an apology?'"While not mentioning Gillis directly, Ricky Gervais tweeted over the weekend that it's a comedian's job to joke about whatever they want."Please stop saying 'You can't joke about anything anymore.' You can. You can joke about whatever the f*** you like. And some people won't like it and they will tell you they don't like it. And then it's up to you whether you give a f*** or not. And so on. It's a good system," he wrote.
David Spade responded to the controversy on his show, "Lights Out with David Spade.""I think when I was younger on 'SNL,' when you get hired the first move wasn't to rifle through your past to make sure you get fired right away," Spade said. His guests, comedians Bill Burr and Jim Jeffries, agreed."Did they go back and also try and look back at good things the person might have done, or are the just looking for the bad stuff?" Burr asked, adding, "You could honestly do that to anybody. I don't get it. Millennials, you're a bunch of rats. None of them care; all they want to do is get people in trouble."
Jeffries blamed the backlash on "cancel culture.""The guy shouldn't have been fired. It's just a couple of things back in his history -- are we going to to go through everyone's history? Or are we going to get every sketch that 'SNL' has done that involves race?" he asked.
"SNL" alum Norm Macdonald invited Gillis to message him for a sympathetic ear."Hey, Shane, I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine how you must feel. The work it takes to get that show and to have it snatched away by some guy who does "Spoken Bird" poetry. Unacceptable. Please DM me, pal, when you have a moment. I'm so sorry," he tweeted.

CNN contacted several working stand-up comedians about Gillis losing his new job. Two requested their names not be used in this story, citing "SNL's" influence in the comedy community and fear of professional retribution from comedy club bookers for defended Gillis."We are all talking about it, but a lot of people are afraid to comment because they'll lose their gigs. I know I'll lose my job if I say what I think," one long-term, New York-based comic told CNN. "If technology didn't exist, he wouldn't have been fired."

The problem here is not that he was doing some one off comedy bit on some random show a few years ago.
The clips are basically him talking with his friends making racist comments. Now they may try to pass them off as jokes but it was just regular back and forth making fun of race, there was no comedy bit. And it wasn't just one time and it wasn't years and years ago.
To pile on top of that, the guy offered the worst apology ever. Like he's sorry if you were actually offended. Not sorry, I made a mistake, I'm learning from it, but basically hey, I'm a comedian, get off my back. If he offered any kind of contrition I'd be fine with like him not losing his job over this, but he barely tried.

No question. I don't think young people have any idea how brilliant he was. What have they even seen him in besides Animal House and maybe 1941? They're not watching 40 year old reruns of SNL are they?
And Rob Schneider is Asian.

Rob is 1/4 Filipino and does not "present" as Asian, which is what matters when the concern is lack of representation.
Not to be insulting derivative, but also be honest, the point is to NOT have round eyes, so that viewers who do not have round eyes can look at the screen and say, "there's someone who looks like me."
Fred Armisen's paternal grandfather was Korean, but no Asian person ever looked at Fred and said, "I'm being represented on TV!"

I don't think that one grandparent counts for his ethnicity. Asian descent, sure. But he's not an Asian American.

I heard comedian Joe Koy interviewed once and he said as a kid he didn’t think he could do comedy because there were no Asian comedians. The breakthrough moment for him was watching the SNL Mothers Day special. Chris Farley, David Spade, most of the cast had their mothers on. I remember watching this myself when I was about fifteen. Rob Schneider had his mother on and Joe could see that she was Filipino. He said it blew his mind.

I know I shouldn't ask this, but what exactly is the point of bringing up Rob Schneider? Is it "he's 1/4 Filipino and doesn't agree with the Gillis firing, therefore all Asian-Americans were ok with his jokes"?
If so, I might direct you to Sandra Oh's comments on the issue (easily searchable). See, I'm amused by all the white (or, at least 3/4 white) comedians coming out in support of this guy and thinking he got treated unfairly. Seriously folks, talk to some Asian-Americans and get THEIR opinions about how they were treated growing up, and you might see things differently. I know I'm still learning.

I explained why I brought it up. Rob inspired at least one prominent Asian comedian.

It wasn't a comedy bit, it was just a dude telling racist jokes. I take that back, they weren't even jokes, it was just racism and there was laughter. I agree with Gervais, you can tell whatever jokes you want, you can be as racist as you want, film it, whatever, it's not illegal and it's up to you whether you care, but man don't expect to keep a gig on SNL.
Also this:
https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/shane-gillis-makes-first-stand-up-appearance-since-snl-firing-1203341768/
Appearing on stage at comedy club the Stand in New York City, Gillis performed an 11-minute set that pulled no punches when it came to his recent career turn. “Everybody’s been like, you can’t say sh–t and not expect consequences,” he said, wearing a “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast” hoodie. “I’m fine with the consequences. I’m not arguing. F–ck it. But I do want everyone to know that I’ve been reading every one of my death threats in an Asian accent.”
Also, the rumor is he was targeted to be a cast member specifically to get a conservative on the show. I'm not going to get into politics but of course:

In your own post, you said it was Rob's MOTHER (not Rob himself, and that's a big difference) that inspired the comedian. Had we never seen his hapa mom, would the Asian comedian still have been inspired?

Yea, this dude wasn't making a racist joke at a comedy show that didn't go over well. This was pretty much him and a buddy saying Chinese people suck. This was a no brainer firing and I'm a bit surprised comedians are coming to his defense when this has little do with comedy other than him being a comedian.

It's funny that Jeffries doesn't want people looking into people's past. If people did, they might see him talking about having sex with underage girls that he plied with alcohol and drugs...

Well, maybe Norm, but he really really really hated the way he was let go by SNL.

As someone who considers himself Asian, I will attest to little things that inspire you when you are young. When I was a kid in the late 70s, early 80s, there weren't any Asian athletes in pro sports, then I found out that pitchers Ron Darling and Atlee Hammaker were half Asian (Chinese and Japanese respectively). Something like that made me feel less isolated being the only Asian in a small rural community. I can see even how Rob Schneider could inspire someone.

After Norm's firing, that wasn't going to happen. And now we know it NEVER will even if Norm and Lorne patch up their differences.

He loved Rob Schneider, and as a 12 year old boy he was thrilled to find out he was Filipino like him. He figured it out when he saw his mom. He was a kid.
Why do you want to twist or negate what I’m saying.

Re: Saturday Night Live adds new cast members and first Asian Cast Member for Season 45
Because it is disingenuous to point at Rob Schneider and say that SNL has had an Asian-American cast member before, and the Jo Koy story just reinforces that point. Even if it is technically true that Rob was both Asian-American and an SNL cast member, he did not present to the public as an Asian-American performer. This is backed up by the fact that Jo Koy, a Filipino-American, had no idea Rob was also F-A until he saw Rob's mother. The point of diverse representation is that non-whites can look at the show and SEE people who look like them.
