They've been holding back selling more copies because their servers cannot take the current load they have right now.

I hope these performance improvements they are supposed to be putting in today fixes it if they are starting to sell more.

its bad now. i hope it does get any worse especially on the pvp servers.

I'm not sure where that rumor started, but that's actually quite wrong. Blizzard hasn't been holding back any copies, it's simply underestimated demand.

It's doubtful that there are going to be any changes to the queues until character transfers to different servers is implemented.

I saw a Blizzard rep on the official forums say they weren't shipping out more copies until they fixed their performance issues. If I can find the thread again, I'll link it.

Here's an official link for you:

http://www.blizzard.com/press/011005.shtml

Over this holiday season, demand for World of Warcraft was so great that retailers estimate that nearly all remaining supplies of the game sold out across North America, Australia, and New Zealand. To accommodate the increasing number of players eager to join World of Warcraft, Blizzard will be bringing several new servers online. After a short and successful testing period to ensure server stability, the company also plans to release additional units to retail outlets nationwide.

I don't believe any Blizzard employee was allowed to make any statements like that, although maybe it was misinterpreted.

I can see how the press release makes it sound like copies were being held back, but again, that's not the case. It's more the case that a certain amount of copies were made in anticipation for the amount of users playing the game, as well as the number of servers needed. The numbers were underestimated, and copies sold out. In conjunction with new copies going out, new servers will eventually come to prevent more queues and high populations on individual realms.

I will say this: one of my CD's was defective when I got the game, so I sent it back to Blizzard for a replacement. They mailed me a jewel case with all four CD's in it. So, they do have copies of the game out there.

Actually, he's right. I found that statement on the official WoW site as well. I can't remember where the link is, but it's there.

Good news? They have ONE copy at one of my local Best Buys. I ordered online with a store pickup, so hopefully it's not an inventory screw up.

If you're desperate enough, ebgames.com has the collector's edition for the bargain price of... $149.99! There's a thread about this on the WoW forums boycotting EBGames for scalping.

I think I cursed myself. It was an inventory glitch. I'm going to try one more round of calls locally, then I'll just order direct from Blizzard.

lol, i'm really disliking ebgames right now... a friend of mine tried to buy a the new slim PS2 there and they wouldn't sell it to him unless he bought 2 games with it.

so he did and then returned the games at another ebgames down the road.

--
for me, when i went to one of my local ebgames (on cityline ave), the manager there is a total piece of work. "do you have the collector's edition of WoW?"
"no, and there's no way you're going to find it. maybe ebay and you're lucky to find it for $200! might as well give up."
so, i went down a little further to a gamestop... "do you have the collector's edition of WoW?"
"yes." i bought it.

that was about a month ago though. who knew it was going to be so hot?

There are certainly copies out there, especially for media replacement from Blizzard. It would be silly not to have copies to exchange.

In regards to the EB pricing, Blizzard is prohibited by law from setting strict or maximum prices, so they are able to sell them for whatever amount they choose.

Got my copy late december from Amazon.ca; added 12$ for express delivery and got it the next morning at 9

Dunno about the US, but in Canada stores that were sold out are getting copies again. Like you said, just order from Bliizzard's store. Then join us on Cenarius

I doubt that it would take blizzard 2 months (game came out mid-nov) to send out more copies.
They must've been holding back sending new copies on purpose.

The lag is so bad sometimes, it makes the game unplayable.
Died a few times due to lag.
also, sometimes you get randomly kicked out of the game.
when that happens your group has to wait 20 mins before you can get in again.
Its extremely annoying, especially in instances.

Out of curiousity, what server are you on? I checked out wowcensus.com, and the servers range from 3000-24,000 users. Looks like Cenarius has 12,838.

But it isn't as though X amount of copies went out on release day and that was that. Based on the numbers mentioned in press releases, it wouldn't surprise me if there was the initial pressing to retailers, followed by another a month or so later.

I would take the numbers on WoWCensus with a grain of salt (and this is coming from a big proponent of that site).

I'm on Feathermoon, one of the "second generation" servers that was brought up late the first week. We were low population for a while, but now we're up to Medium. Very nice place to play, very little lag, etc.

Try Costco if you can. I got mine there after all the other places around had been sold out for a while for around 43.96.

I found a copy tonight at Wal-Mart! It's loading on my computer right now. We stopped in to pick up a couple non-related things, and although I had called the day before, I thought I'd stop by electronics and see if they had any. There were 3 copies sitting on the shelf just waiting for me.

it is the pvp servers that has the most lag and highest population.
I have a char on archimonde there.
my other non-pvp char on malygos is not as bad, but laggy in high population zones like iron forge.

Most of the original servers brought up with the launch of the game are the ones with the highest population. Mostly due to the fact that once one or two of their friends are in, new players want to join them which creates the big ass queues. A lot of Australian players also seem to gravitate towards some of those high populated servers as well. Hopefully when character transfers are implemented it will even out.

I'm kind of glad that i got out of Blackrock early on. Crushridge is fairly low population for a PvP server, and i never have any of the major lag issues that others report in the main cities or auction houses. Even PvP battles have been pretty smooth for me, although i have a fairly good computer.

I get such massive lag when I first go into the big towns like Ironforge and Stormwind. When it's lagging, it's hitting my HDD really hard. I only have 512Mb of RAM... anyone think that an upgrade to 1Gb of RAM would help this out?

Upgrading to 1GB of RAM helps WoW out a huge amount.

Well, I'm glad that Centarius was chosen as our server. Because of the extra downtime, they gave everybody with a character on those servers (including Centarius) a free day. Even though my character has never been played, it counted and I got the day!

That's all fine and dandy, but I'm getting tired of the monkeys working their Vic-20's at Blizzard...

It's been 4 days in a row that at the same time (around midnight eastern) I get stuck at the "authenticating" screen. Sure I could read a book or do my dishes instead but those are done and I wanna play WoW

I'm still in my free month so we'll see how it goes. Cenarius so far has sucked big time.
