Per a lot of online and forum reading....see this. I have tried all of this and have had huge performance increase. Also the 1 gig of ram made a very big difference. Especially in big towns. I am playing the game now on my laptop without lag. Also I am on a PVP server with low population

i shudder at the thought of the lag w/ less than 1 gb or ram. b/c i have 1 gb and sometimes, when i hit ironforge, i don't move for a little while b/c i will run right into that ravine b/c of the lag.
once it's up though, i can deal with it. if only people would just stop hanging around in front of the bank w/ their mounts showing off - pretty lame.

thanks for the link though on the video card settings. right now, i have max everything, turned on everything. i may tweak it based on that article.

the site is blocked for me (im at work)
I also have 512 Megs. when I ctrl-alt-del to look at my memory usage, i see that i still have free memory which is not being used.
I didn't think increasing memory would make a difference.
am i wrong?
I didn't think it was my memory/machine because in places like IF, its very laggy in the first 20-30 secs then it clears up.
if it was my memory, i would expect it to be laggy the entire time.

I went to so many stores looking for anothe copy this weekend. 4 walmarts, 2 best buys, a compusa, an apple store, circuit city and a Sam club. No luck at all. My wife agreed that we'd get another computer (G5 iMac) to replace her old iBook and my old G3 server, but mainly to play WoW on. we just need to find a copy, or atleast the CDkey.
KirstenS: Can you pick me up on of the other copies that were at your walmart? I can paypal you the cost plus ten or fifteen bucks. please? You could just email me the CDKey and ship the box/discs later when ever its easier for you. This deal goes for anyone else as well.

I still can't believe we are having so many problems, and such infrequent patching. I know EQ2 might've been a more rushed product, but they seem to have a patch a week fixing issues, and have had several content additions.
I did hear they had a rather nasty patch a couple weeks ago however.

OK, thanks, though. I sent you am email so ignore it. Lowest price on ebay seems to be 80 bucks. I think 70 would be as high as i'd be willing to go. It would probably be worth the little extra amount to not be going nuts for a month (if they dont end up shipping more til march).

I think i may have lined up a local copy for 70 bucks. I should have just done this last week before spending 3 to 4 hours driving around.

I was checking there yesterday and this morning and they were out of stock. I'm sure after paying 20 bucks over, copies will start showing up everywhere. oh well, i'm dumb.

I heard some of the people, who work for Vivendi Univeral upstairs in my building, on the elevator this morning talking about the server outages. Just thought it was funny to hear people talking about WOW in the elevator, didn't get any useful info though.

They just comped everybody an additional 48 hours. For those who can't go to the official site:
48-Hour Free Time Extension - Block on 1/18/05
In our effort to try to continually improve everyone's game experience, we recently updated some of our database hardware. This update required extended downtime for certain realms as we transferred some of our data from our launch servers to our new servers. The hardware update and data transfer was intended to split the load among multiple servers, which would in turn improve performance across the servers involved.
Even though our updated hardware represents some of the best technology currently available, configuration of this hardware proved problematic in some cases. We're working through the challenges diligently, and we feel that resolving the issues that some players are experiencing is just a matter of time now.
We do appreciate your patience and enthusiasm about playing World of Warcraft, and we regret that you faced periods of high traffic this past weekend that caused some of you to have a poor game experience. So, due to the extended nature of the server issues, we will be providing a free 48-hour extension of play time. As with previous extensions, this will show up as free extra time on your current billing period (or on your trial period, for those of you who purchased the game recently). We hope you'll bear with us as we continue to work hard on implementing changes for long-term stability.
We've received many calls and emails from players telling us how much they're enjoying World of Warcraft and that they would just like to have a more consistent connection experience. In order to achieve this, we will continue our analysis, and we'll continue to take further measures as needed, such as occasional login queues. However, we will also continue putting every effort into consistently delivering more information about related technical issues. Again, we appreciate your ongoing patience; our ultimate goal is to provide the high-quality gaming experience that you expect from Blizzard.

Maxflier: thanks, but i told a guy i'd buy a copy from him tonight. If he flakes on me, i'll look to you.
groucho: i cant see the wow page at work, can you give me a quick summary of battleground preview part 2? part one looked great; almost like a completely new game. the 48 hour bonus is great as well.
I just got back from buying a new computer, so hopefully tonight my wife and i will be able to play at the same time. I'm going to start a human mage since a paladin/mage combo seems like it would be pretty good.

It really is a memory problem. Not lag. I used to play on an old laptop with 512 MB and had stuttering and freezing problems in Ironforge. I was in a hotel yesterday with my new laptop (which has 1 GB of RAM) and tried to play using the dialup 56k modem. Much to my surprise, the game ran flawlessly with no stuttering or freezing even when I was standing in front of the AH in Ironforge. I almost fell out of my chair in disbelief! So, I know firsthand it is a memory problem not a lag problem...

those pvp battlegrounds sound sweet. but i'll definitely wait till i'm 60 before heading in. being a warrior is already at a disadvantage against same levels of other professions like rogue or paladin.

That said, the preview does state that the Alterac Battleground is for people at or near level 60, but that there will also be Battlegrounds for lower level characters.

Okay, I'm interested in this game. I'm starting to become majorly disillusioned with City of Heroes' lack of variety. Assuming I can find a copy:
1) What's the best server to pick (ie. least downtime)?
2) What's a good beginner class? I'd like to pick something for a week to learn the ropes, and then reroll into a serious character?

I'm on Feathermoon, which was a low population RP server when I first joined, but it's crept up to medium. Over all there have been no major problems, no queues, etc.

If I had to pick the easiest pre-level 10 class, I would go with hunter. The strategy there is simple: 1) shoot monster, 2) keep shooting while it runs up to you, 3) hit monster. Note that this class gets vastly more complicated once you get a pet.
