Listening to all that randon chatter was driving me nuts. I'm sure it has some use in the missions, but is there any way to turn it off?
Also, while I'm a huge fan of the game so far, I must say that the bit in the beginning with Bruce Wayne -- he looked so chunky and moved so slowly and robotic, it almost looked like a last-gen character model. Having just played Uncharted 2 again, that climbing sequence was really unnatural by comparison. I guess that model works just fine as Baman, but not so well with a more realistic character. And that skinny little reporter not wanting to stick close to a hulking mass like Wayne while walking into prison because he thought he'd never been in a fight? Didn't buy that either.

yep. this is the one negative to this game. in order not to miss anything, you need to run around in detective mode. i wish they had a way to integrate it into the game where a secret would flash or glow or something so you don't have to run around playing in that mode.

I am really bummed out right now, after playing this for hours last night, I'm just not feeling it. And with everyone raving about it, it must just be me... :-(
Just seems too confusing, too big, and the fights seem much harder.

Speaking of fights, this is something that bothered me about the first game too : I get that he's Batman so he's not going to shoot the criminals with their own guns after he disarms them, but it always bothered me that when he's in a huge fight, he'll grab someone's baton or lead pipe, hit one guy with it and then drop it. Dammit Batman, that could be useful and it won't kill anyone, could you at least hang onto that nightstick until someone hits you and makes you drop it?

If you're finding the fights too hard, you may want to drop down the difficulty. I'm playing on normal, and I really haven't had a problem yet, and I've fought a few bosses so far.

It's not just you. No problem with the fights, but I definitely think it's almost too big out of the gate. I was also really overloaded with stuff going on and things popping up on screen and not really knowing what to do in particular. I definitely am finding it hard to just "jump in and go". (Course I'm also getting sick so may not be focusing the best right now.)

I also agree with the large area the game covers, pretty disorienting. You're definitely just thrown in there but then so was Batman. I've put the main story aside and am mostly working on side mission stuff which has been fun. Overall I really enjoy it.

Did you play, and enjoy, the first game? I only ask because I felt a disconnect with the game during my first couple of hours too. There is a lot to take in, and the story just gallops along, so you don't really get any time to get acclimated to the city, the controls, or anything really. However, things seem to have clicked for me today, and I'm definitely grooving on the game.

I remember this being a big complaint from the first game, and it really is something I don't get. I use it as a quick thing. I flash it on, look around, and then flash out when needed. I couldn't imagine playing the game with that view on for any real length of time.
In Arkham Asylum, I would turn on Detective mode upon entering a new room just to see how many enemies there are, where they are, and if any have guns. Then I turn it back off. The only other time I use it is when it is required during detective sequences following a trail of DNA or whatever. You certainly don't need it to find Riddler trophies as those are all marked on your map once you get the special Riddler map.

Regarding the skinny little reporter guy, you need to know your Batman history. The people of Gotham don't know Bruce Wayne is Batman like we do. The people of Gotham think he is a rich spoiled brat he spends all his time as a playboy. Also, that reporter is Jack Ryder, who is the Creeper, so he can take care of himself.

I can tell that I'm probably not going to do all of the riddler stuff again, but can anyone tell me what is the deal with the Riddler platforms that you can stand on?

I walked into Best Buy last night and bought it off the rack and I got the Robin code packed in. That's the way most Best Buy exclusives work -- their entire initial shipment comes with the code packed in, so as long as you can get a copy from that initial shipment, you get the code.

Each platform (or set of platforms, in some cases) activates a puzzle that you need to solve in order to get a Riddler trophy. Note that you don't get any instructions for the puzzles, so figuring out what you need to do to unlock the trophy is part of the puzzle.

By the way, is anybody else playing this in 3D? I think it looks pretty good, but this is my first 3D game, so I don't really have anything to compare it to.

Yeah I'm trying not to use Detective Mode as much as AA, but it seems like you do miss a lot if you don't use it frequently.

Great game...but just couldn't get into it (not sure if it was the lack of novelty, constantly having to be in detective mode, weaker story, too much going on, etc..).

You don't give games much chance to grow on you do you? You sold NBA 2k12 like 7 minutes after you bought it and now you have already written off Batman:AC?

Especially if you can't even pinpoint why you don't like it. You don't need to be in Detective Mode the whole time, just turn it on, check the surroundings, then turn it off and move on.

Anyhow, I like the game alot. I wasn't as excited as most people since I never finished the first game, but I played for 2-3 hours last night just going around fighting, and finding trophies.
It's not hard, the complaints about Detective mode are silly, and it's a fun game.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Thread
I loved detective mode in AA it looked cool. I really didn't use it too much and got through the game fine. Are you guys using detective mode to advance through the story or just to find every hidden item? Never understood the point of collecting all the riddler hidden things in AA. Was there some kind of reward for finding everything? Stop looking for every hidden thing and try to enjoy the game for once.
