No they cant and that actually disappointed me. There were times I put my controller down hopnig to die in certain scenes, like Shelby in the car, bute the game ends up making the characters save themselves. Theres only a limited number of times where they can truly die even if the situation looks like they should be able to

Holy crap that park scene....I just got up to the fourth character for the first time. Lots of cool stuff has happened so far. I'm probably only 1/4 of the way done I would guess. Great stuff.

I read two others and decided that they were too different and i need to replay the game now.
Keep in mind - you don't need to replay the entire game. You can go back to any scene and branch off from there, continuing forward from that point. It's sort of like an alternate timeline. It's a good option if you did well for a lot of the game and then started screwing things up.

Did you do this on your first play through or your subsequent? The reason I ask is because I also went back and tried to "break the game" in certain areas and found out that it wasn't possible to progress without doing what they wanted to do. Which meant that even though I felt like characters could die at any given time they obviously couldn't and so it kind of feels hollow on replay. But, that being said, my first time through I didn't want anybody to die so not knowing that was the case, and at least not knowing which events would trigger the death gave me the feeling they could die at any time.

My ending:
Spoiler:
Shaun died, dad hung himself, Madison died jumping out of the window and winters got away free an clear

I'm getting pissed because when I try and play certain scenes differently, the game freezes...just a blank screen

Re: Heavy Rain -The Official Thread (Launches 2/23/10)

My ending:
Spoiler:
Ethan goes to the right place, but Shelby's waiting and about to pop him in the back. Norman shows up and fights Shelby. Ethan gets Shawn out and Madison shows up to let him know the cops will shoot him if he leaves the building. Meanwhile, Norman beats the shit out of Shelby on a conveyor belt and lets him fall to his death. He's later praised as the one that cracked the case and saved Shawn and gets a talk show appearance. Ethan, Madison and Shawn exit the building arm in arm and the cops don't shoot. They all get an apartment together and live happily ever after.

Overall, there were some things I really liked about this game and some things I absolutely hated. It's over-rated as hell and really deserves more like a 6/10 or 7/10 than all the gushing 9/10 and 10/10's it received. I'll probably post a longer critique later, when I have time.

Damn. I figured I was only about 1/4 done. Ah well, this game will have tons of replayability for me.

You can tell how far you are by looking at the rain level at the beginning of each chapter. The game ends when its close to 6 inches. 3 inches is about halfway and use the levels to gauge your progress. Its a good rough estimate

FYI, that chapter, Nathaniel isnt halfway into the game. It is about 1/3 into it. Thats chapter 16 and there are a max of 52 chapters in the game depeneding on how you play. You still got quite a way to go

Yeah, I think the rain is just below 2 inches, so you are correct. Thanks, that helps a lot.

The reason for the gushing, at least in my opinion, is that this is a fantastic change of pace. It's not a sequel to the best selling buddy action combat game, it's not featuring cutesy characters in alien worlds, its not a generic 3d shooter. It's a highly engaging and very emotional game, and I honestly have never been that immersed in a game ever. Even after finishing it and going back to finish off Mass Effect 2 (a fantastic game in it's own right), I long for that emotional link I had with Heavy Rain. That's why I gush over it, and likely why others are as well.

Re: Heavy Rain -The Official Thread (Launches 2/23/10)

My ending:
Spoiler:
Ethan does Madison on the floor next to the bed. When the cops come after Ethan I decide to jump and get away. I didn't get through the power plant and somehow manage to fuck up Shauns location on the GPS. ARI kills Norman like a dumbass. I tried to save Lauren, but the game doesn't tell you which direction is what, so intead he kicks the window out and lets her die. Madison jumps out the window and dies. Ethan puts a gun to his head and puts a hole in it. Shelby walks away scott free. I'm replaying it since that has to be the shittiest ending EVER.

Re: Heavy Rain -The Official Thread (Launches 2/23/10)

Just started. Sort of intimidating. My kid's over at the house and I really wanted to try out the basketball mechanic, see if I could land a shot. But I knew that time was actually ticking away, I'm sure he already thinks I'm a terrible father, so I put the ball down and went to deal with him. He really likes turning on that TV.

I wonder how much I'm going to miss out on due to "responsibility."
