The way I see it, I'm buying a $40 digital copy of Pikmin and getting MK for free.

I thought I read they are retiring all the Wii online servers.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Just picked up the Skylanders bundle on ebay for $200. In addition to the gamepad, should I also invest in some refurb wii remote/nunchuck combos from Nintendo.com, get more gamepads or get pro controllers?

This will mainly be a family system and used mostly by my son. However, I'm probably going to buy MK8 and maybe some more games down the road.

I haven't had a legit game console in a long time, so any help is great appreciated.

Pro controllers. I wouldn't bother with Wiimotes unless you plan on buying Wii games.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

A few Wii U games require the remote (sometimes with nunchuck):

Nintendo Land (some of the minigames, anyway)
Wii Fit U
Wii Party U
Wii Sports Club
Mario and Sonic at the Sochi Winter Olympics

A bunch of games can use them -- a bunch of people prefer the remote/nunchuck in Pikmin 3, in particular -- but I think those are the only ones that require 'em for some/all of the game.

If you get a refurb, make sure it has Motion Plus built in.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I think I'll get both a Pro and at least one MotionPlus/nunchuck combo. Nintendo Land is included with the console I purchased so it would be nice for multiple people to play.

Good Lord, don't invest in another gamepad. You will barely be using the one that comes with it.

Super Smash Bros. will be playable on the Wii U in June (!) at select Best Buy locations: http://www.bby.com/play-super-smash-...st-buy-stores/

Nothing in my state, he types with kind of a frown, but I'd rather play it in my own living room anyway. It's the same version of the game that'll be playable at E3.

Thanks Adam! The location by my house is hosting. I'm looking forward to trying it out. Is there any word on how complete a version we will get?

No word yet. Nintendo really isn't a down-to-the-wire developer, so I'd expect it to be really close.

The Mario Kart demo is packed. Smash will probably be similar. Nintendo can't afford to just rely on name alone any more. They have to show the goods.

Pushmo is coming to the Wii U on June 19th! Well, in Japan, anyway. Maybe here too.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I'm considering selling my Wii U. Since I've been back in school, I've had so little time for games, and the little gaming I have done has been on my PS4. I wanted to support Nintendo in this, but even with Mario Kart and Smash Bros coming out, there's nothing that's really making me feel I have to keep this console. I keep staring at the gamepad that's just collecting dust.

Did you sell it on craigslist, or to a store?

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Can someone give me the basic rundown between the Wii and Wii U, the game differences, what's ahead or a good site to look this all over. My daughter wants one but I'm lost on the Wii vs Wii U bit. Thanks....

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Wii is last gen; motion control, etc. Premiere game is still probably the pack in, Wii Sports. At one point it was backward compatible with the previous gen Gamecube, but no longer. I don't think any new games are being made for it, other than cross platform titles (Skylanders?)

WiiU is the current gen, even though it's way behind PS4 and Xbox One. The main feature is that it has a tablet-like controller with a screen. It is also backward compatible, so you can play all the Wii games on it, and you can use Wii controllers as secondary controllers. Motion controls work the same way as the Wii. It's the one that will have new games come out for it, as Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart are both coming out soon (Kart comes out on Friday).

I believe you can get the WiiU for relatively cheap, if you're choosing between just these two consoles I would recommend the WiiU, since it will play games from both systems.

Why does your daughter want one? Is it because she likes certain Nintendo games? If she doesn't have a 3DS I would recommend that over a WiiU for Nintendo fans at this point.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

The Wii U is backwards compatible with Wii software and controllers. This is important to note because the Wii U supports HDMI, the Wii does not.

Basically you get the Wii U for Nintendo games and that's about that. Mario Kart, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Marios, etc;

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I bought the Skylanders bundle (looks like it's $199 on ebay again today). Bought a cheap external HD case with a Y cable and popped in my old 160GB HD from my PS3. Downloaded some demos and they appear to work great when running off the external.

Looking forward to Mario Kart and my free digital game tomorrow.

My kids LOVE the WiiU. Once in a while we play Nintendoland or Mario Party 8 as a family.... but that's literally the only reason I touch the system.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

They want one for "family playing" and the games are more appealing "family" wise. She did say someone at the store mentioned it being cheaperand upgrade the HD via external. She didn't know about backwardor not but games for the "Wii" were looking scarce on the shelves. So they are backwards after all? Anything else to look for...games, bundles extras or must haves? Thanks again....
