Re: What consoles are you buying this year? Monday Edition!
How do I post a gif? (just kidding!)
I can't wait for the consoles to release. We are just going in circles, having the same conversations over and over.
But.
- Yeah, it's important to note the difference, right now, of 720p vs 1080p. Important to note too that not ALL games are 720p. Sports game are supposed to be 1080p.
- No, I don't think that's high on the list to make a console purchase.
- No, I don't think that resolution difference will stay forever.
But, in my case, since I'm getting an Xbox One on release date, and a PS4 "soon", it's good keep track of this.
Then come a lot of IFs:
- If these differences stay the same
- If the PS4 version of multiplat games looks the best
- If the PSN is at least same as Xbox Live in performance
- ??? (I'm sure I'm missing something else)
Of course I'm going to get the PS4 version of those games.

My PC graphics card costs the same as the PS4, so I just laugh at all the "graphics" comments.
... and then cry when I can't play Uncharted 3 or Halo 4.

oh please, resolution is just another by-point in this console war. This generation will likely be dominated by resolutions between 720p and 1080p, but I think they'll both have their fair share of sub-1080 games. I state this in a non-caring manner because my 7 year old projector is 720p
The whole "Titanfall, 720p on the Xbox One, 0p on the PS4" is one of the lamest things I've ever heard with regards to gaming (it has popped up on a few sites). No shit, it's an exclusive.
Regardless, both consoles are sort of failing on the game front for me, with the PS4 having a slight advantage with the announced indies...that my laptop can play.

For someone desperately crying out for resolution discussion, you sure seem to be ignoring huge chunks of actual conversation for the sake of making a zinger and then never coming back. So I'll try again.
You heard on GAF that Titanfall will be 720p. A game that won't be released for 5 months, running on an engine that you say your toaster can do 1080p. But you believe this now in your heart of hearts as fact, and is another reason why Microsoft, in your eyes can "eat a dick" as you yourself said.
So, again I counter with "It's a rumor, what's the point of discussing it?" But since that tactic worked like gangbusters, I threw in some additional info, such as saying that if Titanfall does in fact run at 720p on the Xbox One, so what? That's the top console resolution for Titanfall and therefore the best it is going to look. You'd have some kind of rallying cry if it looked better on the 360, for example.
One of my top five games of the generation will end up being Deadly Premonition, a game that looked and ran like ASS on the 360, was arguably worse when ported over to the PS3, and is only 720p on Steam. Again, top 5 games of the generation, for me, and it was a technical trainwreck.
I'll say this: If an Xbox One owner who doesn't game on the PC picks up a copy of Titanfall, sees that it only runs at 720p, and then decides against it based on that? That person is a crazy person. Seriously. They have a mental defect of some kind.
Now I'm starting to worry about you buddy. Predicting meaningless bullshit like launch windows or whether or not something will have a power brick is not something anyone ever gave you an earful about. Regurgitating rumors your beloved GAF insiders post isn't you "being right" either. But neither of these are things anyone ever accused you of trolling about. Now, when you go on for an entire damn page about how the power brick is a make or break deal for you when buying a new console? Yeah, that sounds fucking weird, and people will think you have some kind of crazy agenda when you stick to some of the weirdest possible guns.

I've been right about everything from stupid stuff like the power brick and pre-rendered lighting in Forza to slightly relevant stuff like the late November launch to bigger stuff like DRM, hardware shortcomings and 720p resolutions of specific games, and I've been consistently accused of "trolling" for things that I turned out to be absolutely right about.

Resolution never mattered to me for any previous generation (as stated in my previous post). This time, it matters a bit (especially if the disparity continues past March), but it's not going to stop me from enjoying games that are good or excellent in every other way. Deadly Premonition on the 360 was one of my most enjoyable experiences, and I can only imagine what the native resolution was on that. The PS3 version was upgraded (higher resolution, but again, not sure what the actual Ps are), but has framerate dips all over the place. Still, DP is brilliant, no matter where you play it, but I'd recommend the digital 360 version over PS3 because it's $10 cheaper.

Hell yeah Deadly Premonition crew!
I'll even go a step further and say my overall favorite game of the generation will probably end up being The Walking Dead, and that's a game built on an engine that doesn't even seem to support actual video gaming.

I don't think using rumors as a barometer for choosing which console to buy is a sound strategy. But that's just me.

The funny thing about the power brick fiasco is that I didn't even bring it up. You did.
But this is the reaction I got for trying to respectfully answer your question:
See?

Under the rules that are being rewritten in the secret Mods hollowed-out volcano, yeah.
The news itself would be fair game for posting. The idea is that if someone has very vocally made it clear that he's interested in one console and has a habit of being hostile towards the other, he shouldn't be the one posting bad news in the 'enemy' thread (or really posting anything at all there). This forum can be pretty volatile, and that's just throwing a match into a powderkeg. It does cut both ways between the PS4 and Xbox One too. I wish things weren't that way, but several of us think that makes the most sense with the way things are.
I do agree that the PS4 thread seems to be much more open to criticism than the Xbox One thread, though.

I've used this example before, but when the XBox One's own lack of media center capabilities came out, there was plenty of calm disappointment from the XBox thread. To me, I think it's telling that a lot of the defensive reactions are coming from people that have nothing against Sony and are planning on buying PS4's and own PS3's.

I expect both consoles to actually be around the 10x more powerful than the current gen as they stated.
I realize that this won't be fully utilized at launch, but there shouldn't be a performance disparity due to hardware design that would affect how the games play between the systems when released at the same time.
It is up to both MS and Sony to make sure the developers are able to utilize the performance of the systems so they in fact are competitive.

It's not about the relative quality of Titanfall (game looks amazing) or whether or not it's exclusive, and I've never called "720p Titanfall" anything other than a rumor (feel free to check). It's about WHY the X1 can't run games built on Quake 2 engine or Source Engine at a resolution I'd expect a low level PC to run them at.

Pretty obvious it's a heavily modified Source Engine, it's not like the XBox One can't run the same version of the engine of Half Life 2 or something.

But chuckd21, some guy sitting on a train, who just so happens to have crazy buttocks, said it was 720p.
I'll say it again... even if Titanfall is 540p (literally 1/4 of 1080p, if my maths are correct), I'll buy it on day one and play the shit out of it. 100% serious. Because it looks like the best FPS (gameplay!) I've seen.

edit: by the way, I like the subtle changes of the console threads to include "pre-release." It hints (at least to me) that the new threads may be "Owners' threads," which would follow with the hints at new rules that Tyner posted about.
edit2: As long as people understand that "owners" means people who have said console in their living quarters, not "owners" like "oOo! Sick burn! Console Q gone owned by my jokes, son!"
edit3: On second thought, maybe we need "pwners" threads, where people can bash and post GIFs to their hearts' content. Yes, for real.

How about a first party, two character fighting game with a fairly fixed camera? Why in the world is Killer Instinct 720p?
How about Dead Rising 3 and Ryse, both first party published, both started as 360 games, both sub-1080p. Why?

Don't be obtuse. Pick your game. Pick your engine. The question is "WHY?"

Not one time... not ONCE... did I put a game in the 360 or PS3 and wonder "Hmmm, why isn't this 720p?"

Since all games are on Blu-ray (or digital, which has infinite capacity), I refuse to buy any game that's not 50GB. Why can't devs just release 50GB games, regardless of how simple it is!? Fuck that shit.
If a game isn't 50GB + 1080p/60fps, then I won't play it.
