It's up to Sony to release numbers. It's the same reason Apple usually only provides US marketshare of Macs... their worldwide share is terrible.
NPD provides the hardware-makers with the data so they can do what they please with it. All we have is what MS has provided from NPD, which is that XO sold 908,000, the 360 sold 643,000, and PS4 is somewhere in between. But again, that's just for December.
Really, none of it matters all that much. If one of these companies is on the lower end, they'll keep the actual numbers secret (if they can) and provide some PR spin to make a positive comment. When they're winning, they give numbers because numbers look good. I suspect this will go back and forth throughout the year.

Yeah "winning" the sales numbers isn't all that important to either company (Nintendo sold tons of Wiis, but couldn't sell games or DLC or online subscriptions so it didn't amount to much in the end). The fact that both are selling briskly and selling games well is good news for the console market.
I really thought the Steam Box was going to be a huge threat to their market share, but after seeing what was put out there for CES, I'd say they have a ways to go before they're going to put a significant dent in Sony or Microsoft's market shares

It'll be interesting to see the numbers over the next few months, though I agree that both companies care more about their own bottom line than "winning" anything. Sony spread its stock over more territories and their system is therefore harder to find on shelves. It's about to release in Japan as well, so the availability probably won't change before Titanfall releases and moves a ton of XB1s.

Yeah, I think the next few months or first half of the year will be interesting to see, especially just if both systems are able to keep up momentum in a way that Nintendo couldn't with the Wii U.

Major Nelson Says It's Time To End The Hate

Major Nelson says both Sony and Microsoft are going to sell a ton of consoles this generation, so maybe it's time to give peace a chance.
The PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One overall in 2013, but the NPD announced today that the Xbox One beat out the PS4 in the U.S. over the lucrative month of December. It's the sort of "win some, lose some" outcome that inspires no end of fanboy banter on forums across the internet, and while that sort of thing can be fun as long as nobody takes it too seriously, taking it too seriously is something a lot of people tend to do.
Fortunately for us all, there is a voice of reason out there and it comes from none other than Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, Microsoft's point man for all things Xbox. "Both new platforms are off to a great start. We all should be celebrating a healthy vibrant industry," he wrote on Reddit last night. "Sony has done a good job and they should be commended. The hate that infects gaming in the online space needs to go away."
Refreshing, no? Not everyone was entirely convinced of the sincerity of his comments, but it's nice to see someone in a high place taking a very rational, "room-for-everyone" approach. "Sony will sell a ton. We will sell a ton," he added. "The industry is doing well... and consumers have choice."
Well said, Major.

...but then someone will reply that supplies of the PS4 are constrained in the U.S. because Sony's doing more of a global push, and then several people will say that they see Xbox Ones all the times in stores but have never spotted a PS4 in the wild, and then someone will say that it's America that counts anyway so who cares about these tiny little countries that Sony is focused on, and then someone will say that Sony is still the winner in cumulative numbers and blah blah blah blah. In these early days, Sony and Microsoft will move as many consoles as they can get on store shelves. Demand outstrips supply. Not that a "winner" matters (I don't have stock in Sony or Microsoft, and my penis stays the same size no matter who sells the most consoles), but we won't know for a little while who the real frontrunner is.

Anyone else find it weird that they delayed the Kinect Sports game? I mean the system comes with a Kinect and really there's really nothing that uses the included Kinect at this point except for the Walmart-exclusive Zoo game and voice commands to turn things on or "snap" things.
I suppose they could have just rin into unforseen delays, but the skeptic in me feels they might have held that game back to avoid negative press about how the new Kinect doesn't work much better than the old one.

I don't think that's being hypocritical, unless he was out there bashing Sony himself or deliberately instigating flame wars. Releasing sales numbers is just as much about investors and press, and he seems to be talking more about internet fanboy reaction to the numbers that get revealed whether they're "winning" or "losing." He's obviously being defensive, but yeah, it's typical corporate spinning anyway.

Two questions about this fucking XBox One...
1. Is the Avatar marketplace hidden somewhere? I pop in probably twice a year to see if there's any new gear I want, but I don't see it anywhere. I know I can change my avatar using clothes I already have, but other than that, there's no store.
2. Is there NO WAY to turn off the menu sounds? Nothing more annoying than browsing on Netflix and constantly hearing the clicks and swooshes. Same with typing something into the Internet browser. There also doesn't seem to be a way to lower the complete system volume.
WTF, Microsoft?

You can always browse avatar gear on the Marketplace website and it'll appear on the One after purchase. I bet you could even do that on the One via the IE browser.
A better question is why would you want to? Avatars are almost invisible on the One with the sole exception of profile pictures.

Slightly off-topic question, but MS is starting to go into full gear to start creating original programming for the Xbox systems. The Halo series has already been announced, but are there any other games that you think would translate well to television style programming a la Netflix or Amazon?
My thoughts are Gears and Alan Wake. Any others?

Right, and that's a good thing. No chance the "series" will just be filler, whereas many people are afraid the Halo series will be crap and won't actually have much continuity to the game. Not that it has too, but that may turn off the core audience. And let's face it, no one is buying an Xbox One for original TV shows. I guess MS is hoping everyone on Xbox Live will want to watch it.

yep, I love this game. It's very repetitive but the story is pretty good and the gameplay is smooth and damn fun. I got this for $30 from BB --- it's the perfect price point for this game, IIMO.
