Thanks, Starman, you're a genius. I was in a hurry to place the order and rush to the airport, so I wasn't paying attention to those minor details... I'm in Dallas now, and just successfully placed my order. WHEW! I scared myself for a second...

FYI, I ordered X-Files because it has the best chance of rising back over rank 100 (it is at 96 currently). Seinfeld is at 53.

My total for the Ford at Fox set is at $114.03 including the B&N membership. Now to decide if I really need something that crazy...

I didn't notice that before but just checked it after seeing your post and I actually saved an extra $10 based on how they did it.

They calculated the 50% based on the non-member price, but subtracted it from the member price, making the set (without tax or the $25 fee) $79.50 for me. A straight 50% discount off of the member price of $78.88 would have been $89.44. So it's $10 cheaper than it could have been.

It's just the way they do it. I got the 79.50 price as well, but on a separate transaction from my membership purchase.

It's a great deal though, and I'm glad they do it that way.

If you have a MasterCard as your payment method, are you allowed to pay the entire amount with a GiftCard?

I have no idea, but people have had success doing the partial payment. Might as well try it, and if you need to just pay for 1$ on the card.

Well, I just went ahead and ordered the Ford at Fox set. Here is the reasoning that I used to convince myself:

-The total for the set after tax came to just $89.03 for me. I had to buy a membership at the same time, so the overall total was $114.03 as I mentioned before.

-I figured that with the savings I'll build up over the next year by finally having a B&N membership will be well worth it. Right?

-This could go OOP, who knows. I know that many of the films will be available in other sets and as individual releases, but not all of them.

-I feel that the more people they have buy this set, the higher the chances there will be that they'll release more massive sets like this.

Hey guys, which one of these do you think is the best deal?

Harry Potter Limited Edition DVD Collection: Years 1-5 HD-DVD Member Price: $67.50
Planet Earth - The Complete Series HD-DVD - Mixed Media Set Price: $45
Twilight Zone - Definitive Collection Member Price: $95
Star Trek - The Complete Original Series DVD Member Price: $56
Stargate SG-1 - The Complete Series Member Price: $104
The Ultimate Matrix Collection HD-DVD - Mixed Media Set Member Price: $54
Complete Matrix Trilogy HD-DVD - Mixed Media Set Member Price: $45

I want them all, but can only afford one.

PS I am leaning towards the Twilight, Star Trek and Stargate SG-1 sets.

The higher the msrp, the better "deal" it will be. The less likely you will be able to get it at that price again.

^^^ agreed! high msrp = high savings!

can anybody else make some high msrp suggestions:

blade runner briefcase*
twin peaks complete*
seinfeld complete*
fox at ford*
berlin alexanderplatz/other criterion sets*
twilight zone complete*
a&e (avengers, prisoner, etc.)*
ken burns' the war*
x files complete
buffy
angel
sex & city
stargate
star trek
harry potter set
etc.

* = ones that i am actually interested in/own, if you're interested in giving me further suggestions based upon my likes. i can't find a way to search all dvd's by price, but that could be a useful tool. goal = big savings on a boxed set that i have wanted! (wish some of those region 2 sets were included: this would be the best way to pick up that monster ingmar bergman box)

Wow I am so close to doing this as well. Anyone give me some advice for getting rid of my current Stargate seasons 1-9? Amazon, Ebay, or Craigs List?

You will probably have another chance at discounted television sets with their tv sale in the spring. Thats why Im sticking to film sets.

I personally am thinking about the United Artists super gift set. But not many others are interested. I would like to see the set discounted to 30 percent which would require more people to order it. If it doesn't decline I will have to research other products.
You could see if the Agnes Varda criterion set becomes a preorder in times. It doesnt appear to be there yet.

The B1G1F was in January last year (into early February). I hope they do that again, but I can't pass on these deals "hoping" they do it again... But I understand your reasoning for selecting films based on that assumption. Other than Ford, there aren't any other huge film savings now, and there are a TON of great TV box sets.

However, there is one criteria that no one has mentioned that you may want to keep in mind. How many of these "complete collections" are LIMITED? If any of them are limited, you may not want to take a chance on them still being available in January for the sale. I know that is only 3 months away, but with Christmas inbetween, it is very possible they could sell out and be OOP before the supposed January sale ever comes...

I don't think many of the tv sets are really limited. Look at the bs fox pulled with the Buffy sets. They said it was some limited product. But they keep on producing them.

I did some research, and I do not see the word "limited" in any of the ones I looked up. In addition to the Buffy limited set, there was also a Friends limited set that did go fast, and never came back in the wood box with swinging doors. Most of these sets don't necessarily look special. Maybe just the Stargate set with the Stargate on the front...

Had an account expiring soon, so opened up another one + one for my wife.

Ended up getting Seinfeld, ST:TNG, & X-Files complete sets. Now I can sell off my individual sets to recoup costs even while getting missing seasons + bonus content.

Just out of curiosity, how many accounts is one person / address allowed to have open simultaneously? Couldn't find any information about limitations on the B&N site.

Also, got a pop-up when first applying the coupon listing both the online code and a different "store coupon" code. Will they accept the code in-store, or does a member have to present the actual coupon with a bar code? Would love to get the Burns' sets of Civil War, Baseball, & The War at 50% Off (and have shipped to home to get the online price).

Thanks.

You need the actual coupon with the barcode for in-store. The coupon they sent me is a sticker, to prevent fraudulent copying I'm sure...

I was wondering who posts 'new' coupons and where that person gets them from (email, B&N, promotions, etc.)? Also, are there any coupons besides the 50% promotion still going on?

So I just joined Barnes and Noble's membership plan solely for the purpose of ordering the Ford at Fox set, however, when I tried to apply the coupon it wasn't recognized. I went back to try again a couple hours later and the item is still in my cart, but the price has gone up to $237 after my membership discount!!!

Anybody got any ideas?

^ Just checked the item listing and they raised the member price to $215.98...make sure your bn membership is active to get the $215.98 price and then ensure that your payment method is MasterCard to get the 50% discount.

Glad I got in on this one early as the price was lower yesterday.

It looks like BN has gotten a little sneaky and raised the price of the more expensive sets. They're now showing as 20% off instead of the 30% they've been the last few days. Still very good prices for the most part.

Yep. When I first read your post, I thought maybe they fell out of the top 100 rank, but the ones I checked did not. That's a bummer. Glad I opened my 2nd account before they took away the 30%. Still a damn good deal though, even at 20% off...

Sopranos S6 Pt 2 and Complete Gilmore Girls are the only high priced items I still see at 30% off. Anyone find any others?
