That was a real good read, thanks for sharing. It's amazing how different people can come away from the same film with completely different observations. I never considered TCM to be a slasher film. The victims only serve as a backdrop to the real story. It's exactly like Blue Velvet to me. It's just a snapshot of an American nightmare. You never know if that house you're driving by has some horrible secret inside, and how bad it can get once you peel back the top layer.

Jesus, I'll give them another chance! Other than Freddy becoming a parody of himself, I honestly can't say for sure what I disliked about them in the first place.

Now that I have a greater appreciation for '80s cheese maybe my opinion will change.

Thanks for the kind words. As for the film, I certainly lean toward your characterization of it. I think it's one of those instances where it just felt like a movie to me; I never really got "lost" in it enough to feel dread or terror. I've had guys at haunted houses come within a foot of me with a chain saw before, and I just found it obnoxious more than anything. Now, evil flying monkeys...those things scare the bejeezus out of me!

And, of course, you can throw in Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985) as two sequels to the original for one more check.
If you watch the Mike Nelson one, you also get the commentary check, so it's up to 15 checks for two movies.

NoES 1, 2, and 3 comprise a solid classic and two sequels. Part 3 is my second favorite of the whole series. Wes Craven came back and was involved in part 3 and Patricia Arquette was great. I've seen a lot of love for New Nightmare, and I did like it, but it wasn't as great as I thought it was going to be. The Final Nightmare (Part 6) is absolute shit and I have considered never watching it again, although I probably will some day.

My order: 1, 3, 2, New Nightmare (7), 5, 4, Final Nightmare (6)

Finally back home. Only managed one movie since Thursday, so it's time for a mini-marathon. Kicking it off with one that I just want to get rid of, not expecting it to be good at all, Transylmania

Has anyone seen The Poughkeepsie Tapes? I just finished it and I was actually freaked out by some parts of it.

Anyone else think Friday The 13th: Part 7 (The New Blood) is in dire need of an uncut release. Minus the finale it just feels so boring.

Don't get me wrong, they're not "good" movies, but they provide what die-hard fans like me want: Freddy killing in ridiculous and hilarious ways. Cut out all the mental BS and give me some four-fingered-knifed slashin'. That's all I wanted when I was a teen growing up with those films.

You make a great point that I didn't get from your blog. TCM really does feel like you’re watching a movie while you’re watching it. It is almost sterile, which is exactly how I describe Kubrick's films. They're almost too technically accurate or the framing is just too perfect to immerse yourself. I find myself enjoying the technical aspect more than the story. So, yeah, I'll agree with you 100% on that point.

Now, evil flying monkeys...those things scare the bejeezus out of me!
This and the fact that WoOz is one of the most popular costume sets in the history of trick-or-treating should be reason enough to count it as a horror movie! Not to mention the melting witch... (oops, should that have been spoilered???)

FWIW, the German release title of "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" translates into English as "Night of the Ex-Girlfriends". therefore, it could conceivably be used for the "Night of" category on the checklist.

Au contraire mon frere! The beauty of the checklist is that it could stay exactly the same but there are literally millions of possible combinations to complete it.

Ghost Ship is the closest I can think of. Just because, you know, it takes place on a ship...

Note to the Foley artists working on Italian cannibal films - snakes do not growl.

I actually just found one, a short, but I'm hesitant to link or recommend it. It's pretty awful. It's actually by that Adam Green guy, the writer/director of Frozen and the two Hatchet films. I haven't seen those three yet, but hopefully they're light years better than his early short, Columbus Day Weekend.

But hey, at least it's 100 times better than a Chris Seaver film.

Posted a Nightmare on Elm Street discussion poll in the "DVD Reviews and Recommendations" forum. I'm hoping to catch them all and rant about it but thought it might also be fun to see what everyone's favorite episodes are. I hope that's not too presumptuous.

Does Chris Columbus have any movies that count as horror?

Yeah but by that line of reasoning Death Ship would be a bit closer to the mark.

Hmmm, hadn't heard of that. And an initial Netflix search turns up no hits. Now I'm interested...

^ Crap, I already placed an order with amazon.co.uk. Guess this one will have to wait for a bit, as it's only avail R2.

I really want that R2/UK disc. The prices fluctuates so wildly on it though on Amazon Uk.

Ha, I just finished the fan commentary on Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and Adam Green was saying how unfortunate it is that Columbus Day Weekend is out there to be seen.

Speaking of, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is so good, it has always been my favorite of the series and I really hope it comes to blu-ray at some point. Now on to Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning.....

I recommend nobody see The Rockville Slayer, ever. And don't be fooled by all the fake Amazon reviews.
