What's that you say, Mr. Spock? Logic is the beginning of wisdom? Not the end? Well, ain't that a kick in the head.

Ironically, I was all for the PS3 until it came out (I didn't own a 360 at the time), but then the system came out and the games sucked. Then, after going to a friends house and saw XBLA (x-box live arcade) and I was sold. A couple of months later I bought an HD projector and the HD add-on. I still wanted a PS3. However, I started seeing what Sony was doing with the hi-def "war" and Sony's business practices were very off-putting to me. I have owned both PS1 and PS2 and now, I say, screw Sony. It will be a colder day in hell when I buy another Sony made product. [/end rant]

DVD is not as sharp and does not have as much resolution as HD media, but upconverted DVD looks great on plasma HDTV. A good upconverted DVD can produce WOW factor.

I wait until after Christmas to buy player. If war continues at least players may be cheaper than today and movies less expensive. This difference in price may justify buying second player when cheaper players are sold in Walmart. I hope format war ends, this is better option for consumer and studio.

I've commented on this before. The media prices are fairly low if you shop wisely and take advantage of sales. HD and Blu players on the other hand, take a good chunk of an investment. Make'em cheap and the format war goes away.

The reality of the matter is that corporations like Sony and Microsoft are in it for the money plain and simple. Sony wants Blu-ray to succeed and we think that Msoft wants Hd-dvd to succeed barring their complete takeover with VOD.

Guys I am around 24 to 48 hours away from being able to report a MAJOR Blu-ray announcement. I have learned today from a BDA insider that this Paramount development was actually a pre-emptive strike to counter a soon to be made MAJOR annoucement from the BDA.
Assuming everything falls in place as this insider expects, it will be the biggest shot fired thus far in this format war. If this contract can be secured by the BDA this will be the end of this format war, no doubt.
As soon as I get the OK, I will post here in the Blu-ray section. If this happens it gives me new hope that HDM will survive.

IF this is on the level and means that the format war will take a major hit in Blu-Ray's favor, I've got a good idea of what it probably is.
*speculation alert*
The two big things that could influence the war and pretty much sink HD-DVD would be either Universal going platform-neutral or Warner Brothers going Blu-Ray exclusive.
I'm unsure of what kind of ties Universal has to either the HD-DVD technology or Microsoft, so I'm inclined to think it will be an announcement that Warner is going Blu-Ray exclusive and that they'll pull over some titles that had only appeared on HD-DVD to this point, like the Matrix trilogy.
This is all speculation, though, so don't ready anything concrete into it.
However, it appears to be a logical track to go down based off of the rumors of a move that will pretty much skew the format war decisively in Blu-Ray's favor.

Paramount's CTO on Why His Studio Is Dumping Blu-ray
Article in PCWorld http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,13...y/article.html
Most important part of interview-
I do not want any compression!!
Most important part of interview-
PCW: What about the additional capacity of Blu-ray, which has 50GB dual-layer discs, as opposed to HD DVD's 30GB dual-layer discs? Some studios have cited the additional capacity as necessary. Are you going to miss having the extra headroom?
Bell:.....If everything else were equal, more capacity would be better. Why not?........But if you convert the playing time, a 30GB disc gives you somewhere between 3 and 4 hours of capacity. It depends upon the nature of the movie and how you compress it.....A 45GB disc is under development. [Editors' note: This disc has been in development for two years.] Secondly, compression will become more effective. The number of minutes you get on a disc depends upon how much you can compress a movie. As we gain experience with the new codecs, the ability to compress at high quality will be improved.

I've been away for a few days but man this is huge news for Hd-dvd! This was the last thing I was expecting to happen.
Regarding any payout, it probably evens the field with Sony so who can throw bones on either side? I wonder if MS/Toshiba would be willing to throw some bucks in the direction of Lionsgate/Disney eventually. The one thing I would like to state is that this will only give Universal more reason to stay exclusive as now they are not the lone major studio "bad guy" in the industry.
I would also be thrilled about the Fox BR releases but lord knows if we'll really get them.
Regardless, this only stengthens my long held opinion that the Time Warner properties are the single entity that could end this just by picking a side.
