It pillarboxes through HDMI? Interesting. That's the first I've heard about that. And I was sure that the PS3 was upscaling my dvds through component. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait and see when we get our brand new 1080p plasma after Christmas.

Question to all, what do you guys expect from the BDA for CES? Me personally, I expect 2.0 player announcements and maybe new classics from Disney and hopefully something from Warner.

I expect nothing. That way any announcement would be a welcome surprise.

Warner going all-Blu would be cool... failing that, I would very happy if they started doing separate encodes for Blu to take advantage of the extra 20g of space. I'm not saying it would make a noticeable difference with every title, but after looking at what Disney is doing lately, I'd at least like to know that Warner gave us their absolute possible best.

Honestly, the two things that would make me the happiest:

-DTS-HD MA support announced for the PS3

-WB and Uni drop combos

Not super concerned with what WB does, but I would like to know I can still buy WB day-and-date titles as Blu-Ray to avoid the combo.

Since title announcements at CES can often not be relied on (I"m looking at you Fox), I won't bother saying what titles I'd like to see.

I'm not sure if this has been covered, but will Warner ever bring their HD-DVD exclusives to Blu? Because I really, really want Batman Begins and Casablanca.

An insider had stated a while back that Batman Begins is scheduled somewhere around the time The Dark Knight comes out.

If they can be relied on, I'd like some catalog title announcements from New Line. Since they released that SE of Boogie Nights the time as Magnolia several years ago, how about releasing those two as a tie-in to There Will Be Blood? Then again, they may need to be remastered because that was long ago.

I don't expect Disney to announce anything notable that is animation-related (besides the already-known Finding Nemo and Sleeping Beauty), but some Miramax title announcements would be nice. How about Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love?

It is not allowed to upscale standard DVD over analog connections. Dumb rule from the DVD forum that applies to all DVD players. There are probably some hacked players out there that can do it, but it is rare.

If they continue to support hd-dvd, they will not do separate encodes. Doesnt make sense to (financially speaking).

I got to say, the Season Play option on Lost Season 3 is awesome. Such a simple, great feature that saved me some headaches remembering where I last left on. Is this a first for BR/HD?

Me too!

I have read in more than one place (from more than one person) that apparently DTS-MA decoding is very processor intensive and that is why they haven't gotten it done yet on PS3....but if you ask me, that has to be some kind of joke! This system that has the "Cell" processor in it, that's supposedly one of the most powerful chips ever made? You're trying to tell me this system has the raw power to pull off a game like "Ratchet And Clank Future" that looks just ridiculously great and has about a thousand things going on at times in it, but it would struggle with a simple decoding of an audio codec while playing back a movie?
Sorry folks, I'm not buying it, there must be some other reasons....

I've heard it's more the fault of DTS and their trouble coming up with a software decoder than it is Sony.

How are the extras on Lost? I'm debating on getting this but it's pretty pricey.

The extras are good but just for the resolution of the episodes themselves this set is well worth it.

I'm still not sure if it's worth it for me. With the first two seasons I just waited until the DVD sets came out and watched them straight through. The third season I actually watched so I don't know if I could sit and view the whole season again. I'd love to get it, but with Blade Runner and a ton of games that I've bought I'm most likely going to hold off.

Paramount did do separate encodes on their titles and I don't recall reading anything about noticeable differences between the BD and HD DVD of the same title.

IMO Paramount isn't exactly a 'shining light' for HDM. It could never happen, but I'd like to see what Disney could do with some of their material.

Ive got a professionally calibrated 71in DLP and I see no discernable difference between the best bluray movies and the best hd-dvd movies.

Err, but every other Pro-Blu studio is then, right?

Transformers is one of the best transfers on either format, and it was done by Paramount. I could even say the same for Shrek 3, especially that one bonus feature. Paramount has yet to really step up their game release wise, but next year it looks like they are going to be releasing a ton of movies.

I'm only 6 episodes in, so I'll watch the extra stuff after...should be after Christmas time. So far the SeasonPlay thing gets an A+ in my book.

I'd settle for some 1.1 player announcements. This business of just one 1.1 player (plus the PS3 via the recent firmware update) is ridiculous. I'm still hoping for a 1.1 player with analog outs that will decode TrueHD and DTS-HD-MA on-board. Not likely I guess.

Per AVS, Panasonic is supposed to introduce 2 more higher-end players at CES. Each should be based upon the BD30. I'm guessing one of them will be a 1.1 player with built in decoding and the other possibly a 2.0 player.

Agree that Transformers is very nice, but Paramount is very inconsistent. They like to apply excessive DNR to some of their catalog titles (ie. Face/Off). It may look good on a smaller screen, but it doesn't look very film-like at all projected on a large screen with most of the grain scrubbed away. OTOH, Disney right now is very consistent, IMO easily the #1 HDM studio out there.

Well, if it isn't worth spending 60 some odd bucks for an entire season of a great show, possibly the best looking release on Blu-Ray, then I don't see the value of spending 20-30 on an individual movie release. If you plan on getting this season on dvd then you're better off to pony up the extra 15-20 to get it in Blu-Ray. I'm not trying to be an ass here. I'm just trying to give you my honest opinion. Also, have you seen or heard one negative response or review of this season on Blu-Ray other than somebody complaining because they don't want to spend any money on it? Check it out because you won't be disappointed.
