re: Star Wars

Great news!

Looking forward to all of the endless bitching and complaining about the theatrical/non-SEs when they do show up.

re: Star Wars

I'm reading that Landis is close with George Lucas, and Lucas himself told him this. So he's speaking out of turn, but the story is that he heard from Lucas, who heard from Disney.

re: Star Wars

Not that many believed it anyway but what about all that horseshit that the originals didn't exist anymore?

I'm not going to believe this until Conan tweets it.

The original negatives don't exist anymore, at least not in their original form. The SE changes were physically spliced in back in 97. One would assume that the excised bits weren't just thrown out though. There was always a way to get this done, it was just a matter of will.

As to whether or not this is actually happening, there's been quite a lot of legitimate chatter in the last year or two about it. The films were scanned in 4k at some point in the last couple of years. It's always been inevitable that it would happen. It's just been a matter of when.

Mike Verta, a freelance special effects/music guy who has done work for Lucasfilm and still has many connections there, just finished his own years long private efforts to restore the original film (Google Star Wars Legacy. The work he did was amazing.) and was planning to offer up all of the work he did to Disney. He's been very positive in his comments lately (but not saying anything specific) about the potential release of the originals. That may sound like dopey fan nonsense, but I think this is a pretty good indicator of what's to come.

re: Star Wars

Would be nice if true.

I'd also want the Fox logo there and the original poster for each movie on the cases.

re: Star Wars

I've asked this before, but I will again. Which original posters? Seems like somebody always has a different idea on what those were based on which of them they saw first.

Issue is even worse for the sequels. Lots of variations out there.

re: Star Wars

I think IMDB and Wikipedia have pics of the original posters for each movie and they seem to be the same that were on the 1990 VHS cases. I'd be happy if the new case covers were like those.

Like others, I'll believe it when I see it announced officially.

I'll be the doubting Thomas in this case. I won't believe it until I have it in my hands.

re: Star Wars

I find this hard to believe since it's been brought up a couple times since Disney acquired Lucasfilm. That said if it's true I'll buy them. I'm curious as to how it'd work out since Fox still owns the Original Trilogy distribution rights for the original in perpetuity and the sequels until 2020 and we know that they aren't on good terms with Disney.

I'm pretty sure I know which ones you are referring to. I think I had the same VHS set.

But especially for the sequels, I don't think those were the original posters. So when people say the want the originals I wonder if they are one of the people that prefer the posters for Empire and Jedi that have only the Vader Helmet for Empire and only the blue Saber for Jedi.

re: Star Wars

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets released. This is a company that traded a sportscaster for a cartoon character just to get it back into uncle Walt's fold again.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they buy out the rights to Star Wars that Fox has in perpetuity as well.

In general, I don't really care about the cover art, but for this movie, if they don't use this poster on the front...

..they might as well just write "Star Wars" on a piece of paper with a magic marker.

re: Star Wars

I'd love to see wtf these films look like in their original form aside from what those 2004 DVDs showed.

How the hell would John Landis know?! The last time we had this announcement, I almost died of happiness and it turned out to be the non-Anamorphic POS on the 2008 discs. I'll get excited when there an official announcement and info about the restoration. Not before.

Well, there's still the color-timing, the garbage mattes, the sound mix, and lots of other things they could potentially fuck up.

I bet no one noticed I was gone.

Whatever they are, these are the posters I want: http://www.amazon.com/EPISODE-MOVIE-...2711042&sr=1-1

I just hope that Landis didn't mess this up by letting it slip before they were ready to announce it.

The Star Wars name is a license to print money. If Darth Vader Takes A Shit In Disney Digital 3-D came out tomorrow, it would out-gross Avatar.

re: Star Wars

Sorry, I'm not buying it.

Lucas probably told Landis "Disney is releasing the Original Trilogy on Blu-ray" and Landis took George to mean the "original Original trilogy", but George doesn't make that distinction the way the rest of us do.

Besides, unless they've cut a deal with FOX, Disney can't do anything with A NEW HOPE.
