Thoughts?
guess the only issue would be the PAL speedup. if that doesn't bother you then just go for the cheapest.

PAL has slightly higher resolution, but movies are sped up to run 4% too fast. NTSC runs at the proper playback speed.

R2 The War of Worlds (2 Discs, DTS) SE $9.95
R2 The Jaws 30th Aniversary Special Edition (2 Discs, DTS) $6.95
R2 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2 Discs) $ 9.95
R3 The Island $9.95

And I was able to score Spider-man 2 Superbit Collection 2 weeks ago for $6.95... But I think it was a price mistake...

The upcoming R2 UK editions of Come and See and Sophie Scholl are both now available with each listed at $21.95 (after discount).

Apparently the "Sophie Scholl" DVD is less than ideal (non-anamorphic, burnt-in subs, etc.). I'm eager to see the movie, any word on when the R1 is coming? If you do decide to purchase "Sophie Scholl" you might - if you have other stuff to pick up - do better pricewise via Amazon UK.

Wish CD-WOW would add "Calvaire" aka "The Ordeal". And I'm still playing the waiting game for a price drop on "Masters of Cinema: The Prisoner of Shark Island".

Also totally unrelated and off-topic, I'm not too happy with this site's search function nowadays....it's just not turning up stuff as it used to. To clarify, by "this site" I mean DVDTalk, not CD-WOW (although that too seems to be down far too often lately).

flix, they do have the Ordeal aka Calvaire, you just have to use the "warehouse" search.

Thanks BuddhaWake! I've got to start remembering to run a search through the "warehouse" option. I suppose I figured "Ordeal" was such a new release that it would be on the regular site and not yet relegated to the "warehouse".

By the way, congrats on getting your picture! I was rooting for you. I've only done a random sampling (actually got bored of it, if you can believe that) but yours seems to be one of the best ones (actually it might have been the best one compared to others I checked).

yeah. I'm very happy about it (the picture). Let me know if you do pick up "the ordeal" as I have been eyeing it for a while. That whole warehouse option is still a mistery to me. what's the point? is it saying they have it but it hasn't been added to their site, etc. Same thing with Azumi 2 and Don't move. who knows?

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the whole "warehouse" thing is about either (haven't used it yet...but it looks like I'm about to (I'll let you know about "Ordeal" whenever I get around to ordering/watching it)). Maybe "warehouse" is for stuff they perceive as being "low demand" for one reason or another.

For what it is worth on "Azumi 2", I'm actually a pretty big fan of the first one but the second one was really mediocre.

Did you get their e-mail with the subject "Massive Easter Coupon Giveaway"? I received it Thursday and can't get the darned thing to work. They told me they were having technical difficulties which affected a small percentage of their customers and to try again in 24 hours. Well, it's been a whole lot longer than 24 hours and all I still get is some sort of database error.

Found a pretty good deal on the Takashi Miike box set, its available through the warehouse for $24.15. I've only seen it at xploited for $36.95. I pulled the trigger so I'll see how it is. Its my first experience with their warehouse function.

Okay, I'm confused. What is this mysterious "warehouse function" and how does it work?

Please allow me.

"Calvaire" (aka "The Ordeal") is sort of like Misery meets Deliverance meets Straw Dogs. The most interesting/unsettling aspect is that the kidnapper is actually more sympathetic than the kidnappee. And the acting (Laurent Lucas and Jackie Berroyer) is excellent, which is quite rare in horror films. The film does tend to drag in the second half however, and efforts to spice things up with that bunch of hillbilly lunatics isn't very convincing (except for the deliciously surreal restaurant scene). I love Philippe Nahon (Seul Contre Tous, Haute Tension) and he makes a great vilain/psychopath but he's pretty much wasted here. The ending is also a letdown. All in all worth a watch, especially for the relationship between the two main protagonists.

The warehouse is a mystery to us all but the way it works is that you can check their "warehouse" when you do a search and a result might not be there or you want to check further. Is a bit hard to explain since I'm not quite sure how it works but for instance. if you do a search for Miike or the Ordeal nothing comes up using the regular search. but if you notice it'll ask you if you want to check the mysterious "warehouse" once you do you will see the mentioned DVDs thee. some of them have details some have no details.

I always thought the warehouse function just checked product availability at the other cd-wow sites (.com, .uk, etc.).

I thought that the warehouse function reset the clock to 108 minutes!? Oh crap! What is going to happen now?

On a serious note, the cross reference theory sounds logical, but I am still not sure why they wouldn't just combine the database then? I guess it pertains to shipping locations also?

Not really.

Once I was looking for a rare CD and searched it the warehouse in .com & .us. The results were not the same. One had more than the other.
I heard in some forum (forgot where) that some people did place the order on items from warehouse and got it in one month.

However, it's not easy to use for seaching some CD.

Also of note, regarding the 'warehouse' is that the prices seem to be higher. Perhaps they are showing the full retail price?

Higher than the listing found with the normal search engine.

For example, Tetsuo (Tartan Asia Extreme) is $9.95 via the normal search, and $24.15 through the warehouse.

ahh. yes. I see what you are saying. But for some things even the regular price is cheaper through them than with others. And even this is not the case for everything. If you do a search for the Isle the UK Pal dvd is $25.95 and in the warehouse is $24.15. So i would say that its safe to assume that the mystery continues. Now another question is, why is there so much stuff that is $24.15 and almost everything seems to be PAL UK versions.

I'm gonna guess that "the warehouse" consists of a list of all the titles one of the wholesalers they use carries. The titles are probably DVDs that CDWOW doesn't have in stock themselves, but can get rather quickly from their wholesaler. It looks like it's a wholesaler of UK discs, and the uniformity in prices probably indicate a standard markup on all DVDs of a certain cost/retail.

Anybody know why there's such a big difference in the prices of the various Masters of Cinema DVDs stocked by CD-WOW? They range from under $10 to nearly $24 (with the title I really want, TONI, naturally coming in at the extreme top end of that price range). Is there any logical pattern to this system, and do some prices eventually drop?
