They've said it won't break canon. But here's 2 canon explanations possible:
1) He left and came back to the Enterprise later
2) The more plausable, was that he was assigned to another role on the ship during season 1 (and not seen), which was how the writers of Wrath of Khan have reasoned his knowing Khan into canon.

Once again, Zachary Quinto looks pretty great as Spock. Look closer and you'll see he's handing Kirk's ass to him, the latter of whom is on the wrong end of a Vulcan Death Grip.
Karl Urban's McCoy has calmed my calls for Jake Weber to play the role.
Chris Pine looks like he could be a pretty good Kirk, even if from the first stills he looks like he could end up being more like Kirk meets Steve Holt.
And Simon Pegg looks gloriously angry as Scotty.
Bring this fucker on already!

For me to buy that, they have to first prove to me that they're familiar with the canon.
I can buy that Chekov was on the Enterprise but not a bridge officer during the first season, but if this is indeed about Kirk's first mission as Captain, then they're breaking canon by (A) having McCoy on board (some really old dude was CMO in "Where No Man's Gone Before), and (B) not having Gary Mitchell as the XO.

The production looks top notch. That said:
The uniforms look like TOS tv era, but the ships look movies 1-6 era. However, the sets themselves look very Enterprise era. I'm confused.

I don't know, I'm just not feeling it.
The bridge doesn't look bad... a little colorless... the old 1960s bridge would look backward and clunky by today's standards, especially on the big screen.
Quinto looks great as Spock. Excellent choice, there.
The rest, I'm not so sure about. Urban looks about fifteen years too young to be McCoy. Chekov looks strange without the Monkee hair (though the actor looks like him in the face). Don't really car for Uhura's hair pulled back tight (though Zoe is mighty cute). Sulu doesn't look anything like Sulu. Can't get a decent look at Pegg as Scotty, but he doesn't look bad.
Still ambivalent about Pine's Kirk. I'll have to see him action before I can judge the choice of actor.
The biggest hurdle that the movie faces is that these characters have been defined by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Dee Kelly, Jimmy Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and George Takei. Their looks, their mannerisms, their voices. That's something that's going to be damned hard to duplicate.

Entertainment Weekly has the Star Trek article on their website EW. Here's the link:
http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20233502,00.html
It's broken into 8 pages, with 1/2 page is spoiler territory, EW warns you ahead of time of the upcoming spoiler on page 4 which is where the spoiler occurs. The writer gives description of the Star Trek movie throughout that some may consider spoiler.
So read at your own risk.

I wonder what ship that is that's getting a pounding. I like the updated unifroms, kind of like spiderman to show off more texture.
I was feeling the actors before in their roles when it was a head shot but that group shot doesn't really look that good. Of course I'll reserve judgment until I've seen the movie but it will all come down to if I am halfway through the movie and I don't think of them as look alikes but actually accept them as their respective character.
If you ask me that will be an enourmous feat if they can do that.

I used to really like Trek. I could go on and on about what went wrong like most anyone on the internet, but why at this point? I hope this gets something really cool going. I can completely ignore canon and enjoy a well-made film after being pretty uninterested in anything Trek for 12 years now.

I love the uniforms and the actors are all fine, but the bridge just seems too different. We saw an original style bridge in Enterprise's "In a Mirror, Darkly" 2 parter, and I thought it looked fine. I honestly just expected this new production to use a "smoother" version of the original layout, but it looks like they're actually changing the layout, even adding stations that weren't there.
As for Chekov, Walter Koenig supposedly tells a pretty funny story about how he was a lower decks officer when Kahn was aboard, and Kahn was angry at him because he kept him waiting for the bathroom one time.

That was something I asked long ago in this thread - if Gary Mitchell would be a character in this.
The actors all look pretty young - a little too young, but then again, I was very young when I first watched TOS and now I'm older than Shatner was in the late 60s, so that could be influencing me.
