Looking back over your posts you say nothing of the philosophy of Star Trek or its larger meaning. All you seem to care about is how TOS characters are represented and if the new movie will incorporate TOS history. Your love of TOS seems superficial, and I'd say that it is you who does not really understand what TOS or Star Trek as whole was meant to represent.

The tolerance being preached by many in this thread all too often reveals itself as intolerance of those who refuse to tolerate the drastic changes that have been made to TOS.
As for the philosophy of Trek, I've seen nothing in the trailer or the leaked segments that reveals any interest in the forwarding of any sort of philosophy. It looks more like shoot-em-up eye candy than anything TOS offered. Perhaps the studio and Abrams have simply chosen not to release any clips that reveal an interest in the philosophy of Trek. Or perhaps there just isn't anything there *to* release.
As for my interest in the characters, the interaction between these characters is what made TOS special and that lack of interaction is what made shows like Voyager inferior (as well as the bad writing). In fiction and in film, philosophy is revealed through characters and situations. I'm just not seeing that happen here.
And I do resent the fact that there is too much catering to a young audience who cannot find it within themselves to sit through an episode of TOS because it is "old." Dismissing something because it's different or the product of a different age doesn't really fit the Roddenberry philosophy either, does it?

I've been a fan of TOS since back in the day. I enjoyed most of the movies (based on TOS). I never really got into all the subsequent TV series.
That said, I'm more than willing to give this movie a chance. I will only declare that the movie sucks and JJ Abrams raped my childhood AFTER I see the movie.

I can't sit through an episode of TOS and I'm 32. There are a few moments here and there but the series is as a whole horribly dated, laughably bad at times and pretty cheesy for the rest of the time. I respect it for what it established, but I have no interest in seeing TOS on the big screen as it was envisioned in the 60s.
And honestly, I can get over the bridge re-design, but I'm just suspicious of the character changes. If they can make it work, I swear to you all I will sing this movies praises from the highest mountain, but as it stands I'm just cautiously optimistic.
And I've said before, if they wanted to bring the basic concept into modern day sensibilities, I would have been far happier with a pure reboot. It would have been far easier for the canonistas to simply not acknowledge it, but now it's being shoehorned into what we know and love and some of us are just suspicious.

So, judging a film by its trailer... Wrath of Khan must look pretty shitty too. No way that can be regarded as the best film in the franchise...

I'm 34 and I would love to see TOS on the big screen as it was envisioned in the 60's. The reuse of the classic bridge and uniforms in Enterprise's In A Mirror, Darkly are proof positive that look can still work, you can even go back to DS9's Trials and Tribble-ations to see it work well.
And honestly, I can get over the bridge re-design, but I'm just suspicious of the character changes. If they can make it work, I swear to you all I will sing this movies praises from the highest mountain, but as it stands I'm just cautiously optimistic.

Anyone see this version of the trailer yet? Exactly the same - but a little surprise at the end. ![Smilie](/images/smilies/smile.gif)
They SHOULD have put THIS version in theaters.

So in order to be a true Trek fan, I need to be all sweetness and light and respect everyone's opinion, even if their opinion is one founded on an intense dislike for TOS or in ignorance of TOS?

Not sure why they didn't. We were wondering that after we saw the trailer in the theater.

You demonstrate it with every single one of your posts.
I like this too:

You are trapped in the world of TOS. TOS is not the end all be all of Star Trek. You are not Gene Roddenberry. You do not know better than he does.
You are at best, an overzealous TOS fan. At worst, you are just clueless.

Woo. This thread is well suited to Star Trek XCCCX (pretend the bar is above the characters instead of below, hah).

Good trailer. I still don't know whether I'll buy, as Kirk would say in Wrath, "a boatload of children" running The Enterprise.
