My folks are past the 55 mark and they enjoyed Trek in their younger days. My mom watched it during it's original run, and I was definitely introduced to the franchise by my folks going to the theater. They may not be card-carrying, plastic ear wearing members these days, but I imagine they're going to like this flick.
And as for this:
I know I've personally said in more than one discussion, on more than one forum, that I would have rather seen Lucas remake the original trilogy, than add all the special edition crap. It could have existed as the original trilogy, and then the six new films, and he would have had nine films to sell us over and over instead of just six.
I'm still cautiously optimistic they'll make all the changes "work". But if they had insisted on updating things to make them more marketable, then they should have called it a reboot from the get-go.
Again, I want this to work, Trek needs a shot in the arm or a kick in the pants, or any other motivational cliche you can think of.
Edit to respond to MaxMFP: I like to consider myself a Trek fan. I have many DVDs, books (both the novels and tech manuals and such), several dozen action figures, my wife and I both attended a convention a few years ago. I even read the occasional Trek fanfiction (not the / stuff though, eek). While I haven't completely drunk the kool-aid*, I'm willing to give it a chance because Voyage and Enterprise both showed that while there are new stories to be told, the people telling them needed an infusion of fresh ideas. (ENT's fourth season is a great example of this bringing in the Reeves-Stevens was brilliant).
*I'm still full from Obama's kool-aid

Oh, no, wait, it's okay to dismiss us, as we're all clearly part of the "MTV mentality." Whatever that means. I don't watch MTV, so I couldn't say.

What Star Trek are we supposed to be embracing? It will have been a dead franchise for four years when this movie comes out. I can't imagine that this reboot will do more harm to the show than Voyager did.

Not sure what these two things have to do with each other.
But look, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of boards out there where people are bemoaning the fact that the buttons aren't the right color or that Spock's eyebrows are at the wrong angle, or whatever irrelevant detail they happened to notice in their 1000th viewing of the trailer. You're more than welcome to go and post there.

Gee, Star Trek perhaps? Do you even know what that means?
Those last shows may have done their part in killing it. But all of us Star Trek fans knew a Renaissance was going to happen at some point or another.
But this new J.J. Abrams film is not it.
I'd rather this franchise remain dead for ten more years than see this pathetic, super-hip attempt try to revitalize this long-running Franchise.
I'll repeat it,
The MTV-mentality has won.
Star Trek has lost.

Hey now, cool your jets there bucko. Voyager killed Star Trek for me. DS9 is one of my top three favorite shows of all time. I grew up on the original series and loved TNG. Hell, I even thought Enterprise was decent.
So don't go see it. Win-win.

I'm still trying to figure out what MTV Mentality is meant to mean. Does anyone care enough about MTV for there to be a mentality based around it? I don't see how people can defend Voyager and Enterprise but attack this like it's killed their children. It's a FUCKING TRAILER.

If you don't like or can't appreciate TOS, then no, you're not a true fan.
It's the other incarnations of Trek that killed the franchise, not TOS. Why people are arguing that TOS needs to be re-envisioned just because Voyager sucked ass is beyond me.
Abrams isn't showing enough respect for something that a lot of people love and cherish. Instead, he's trying to appeal to the young crowd with the typical characters, situations, and kewl CGI that the younger crowd wants.
I find this irritating. There are many ways in which Abrams--who doesn't even like Star Trek, from what I've read--could have made a film that had mass appeal and also respected what has come before. Instead, he's decided that we need to see *his* version of Star Trek. Well, I'm not interested, and I don't like what he's done to a show that's been important to me since I was 5 years old.
And the trailer along with the 4 scenes that have been previewed are more than enough to see that this film deviates from TOS in ways that fundamentally change the characters.
Unless this is all some alternate history that will be solved with a reset button. In which case, this is just a bad Voyager episode.

Too bad this movie will be beamed directly into our brains.

And I'm not calling anyone an idiot, though there seems to be plenty of vitriol directed against those of us who are against this film, which is what garnered my initial irritation in this thread.
