Once and for all, I'd like to know why in the realm of Sci-Fi Nerdom that:
It's okay for "SW" fans to make a federal case about Lucas' digitally tinkering of the original trilogy, it's *almost* treated as a legitimate concern by the public at large, buuuuuuuuut...
"ST" fans get harangued into oblivion for wanting something as simple as wanting JJ Abrams showing a bit more respect to a 40 plus year franchise that he wants to make money off of. I guess as a Trekkie (Trekker, whatever!) I'm used to having to sit at the back of the Nerd Bus.
Personally, I think it's slightly shameful and hugely ironic that Deep Space Nine--the least popular of all Treks-- could pull off that a brilliant coup of continuity with the episode, "Trials and Tribble-ations" simply because THEY CARED. All J.J. seems to want is a paycheck from Paramount.

I think the "haranguing" you mention is because 1. it's Star Trek thread NOT an Star Wars thread so it just seems like Trekkies/Trekkers are being shit on; and 2. the film hasn't even been released. Yet, in typical dvdtalk/internet fashion....many have already passed negative judgment on the film. And a lot of that is unfairly based on stills and other images. I mean come on.
Sure there's a good chance it might be a shit film. But then again, many with Negative Thoughts about it may end up liking it more than they thought. Or at the very least more than they'll admit here.

Oh please. Both of those Fanbases have their extreme pain in the ass members.

I don't think anyone is saying they won't see the film or thinks it will be a terrible film based on the stills presented here.
So for me yeah I think the ship looks really bad based on that picture. Yeah I won't like it if they cause continuity problems. But am I looking forward to the movie? Hell yeah! I want a good movie first and a good star trek movie second. But that doesn't mean that I'm not going to complain about certain aspects of details that are released before seeing the movie.

Let me go on record as saying I think this is going to be the biggest turd-fest since the septic tank at Taco Bell exploded. My view's only partially based on the ship design and lack of continuity. Mostly, though, it's because the only reason JJ Abrams isn't the biggest hack involved with the movie is because it's written by the minds behind Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

Also, most of the SW complaints happened after people saw the changes, not before.

It could be a turd but lets wait until May to call it that. Of course, After you have seen it.
I was a skeptic too because the last two Trek series have been pretty lame but these pictures and stuff I have read are really turning my opinion around.
Looking forward to the preview too.

Aww..man. I was really hoping the trailer would have been up by now. I was thinking about being one of those people who goes to a movie just for a trailer but considering I might not even see the trailer apparently, and I haven't seen casino royale I guess I'll just wait until Monday.

I enjoyed the trailer, but i still have my reservations. The other recent Trek trailers always looked great but the movies always felt flat. I think it's because they never do anything new. And I honestly don't think that JJ Abrams has it in him to really carry Star Trek into a new direction. He said he's going "back to its roots". It might have made a good movie 20 years ago, but audiences are more discerning now.
Perhaps it's just because Star Trek (much like Star Wars and Indiana Jones) have simply run their course and lost their ability to really capture audiences' attention the way they used to. Or maybe it's because there really are so few new adventures out there for them to find. Or maybe it's just a general failure of imagination. Or maybe it's simply because they're just putting out the same movie they've done before, just prettier.
If you look at the successful Trek movies, that repetitive quality only becomes apparent later in the movie series. I think because the early Trek movies (1-6) were so focused on telling the kind of large-scale stories that the original series, due to budget and technology constraints, simply couldn't tell. Audiences were more willing then to see the Enterprise in a dramatic scale, and watch adventures and battles that only existed in their imaginations. And that's not the case with modern Trek series. My god, Enterprise was the most expensive show on television and they spent nearly $4 million dollars an episode. All that money and they couldn't even make one hour of good entertainment the whole season for 4 years.
That quality of "sameness" that permeated the last few trek movies is still apparent here. There isn't really a new villain, there aren't any real surprises, there isn't anything that hasn't been done in another movie, and these characters simply can't entertain us anymore unless they want to make a deliberate joke out of themselves like they did with ST IV and VI, and we've already been there.
It might be a good movie, but it will never be a great movie. If you want greatness, you must always exceed what came before you. What made The Dark Knight such a fantastic and captivating movie wasn't just because it was a Batman movie no one had made before - it was because no one had made a comic book movie like that before. Perhaps, in more pensive works such as Ghost World and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did you see an inspired and dramatic realization of the characters and themes, but the point was that it was a character that seemed stretched to the limits in terms of imagination and there was little to nothing that could snag audiences again. And while there definitely was a "back to basics" approach with that movie, there was a broad spectrum of that character's history that was mined in order to create that movie. And it could not have been successful had it not been a fundamentally good movie first.

Well, the one major difference between this and the later Star Wars and Indy 4 is that there's a new creative team behind this effort, so hopefully that means something new will be brought to the table. The reason Trek ran out of steam was that the same people had been cranking it out for 18 years.

Holy shit, could they make this one look any more EPIC? Really jam packed trailer, can't wait to check it out in better quality. Maybe I'm too much of a JJ Abrams fanboy, but I think he's going to be a perfect fit to inject some new blood into the tired Trek series...but again, I'm not a huge fan of the series...
