I read on another site that the new trailer shows:

As opposed to Nicholson's portrayal of The Joker, Ledger's seems to be more of a hobo instead of living in a penthouse with Jerry Hall

Really the knives are irrelevant to the film. His physical appearance yes, but a simple thing as a knife? No. I highly doubt Nolan would present such affection for a knife. A knife doesn't make a man. It's the man using it that's important.
