Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

Chu talks about the delay/reshoots.

Big spoiler:

Spoiler:
The delays have been talked about and reported online. What was it like in that time-frame when you had to go back and shoot extra scenes with Channing and Dwayne after getting that feedback?

All those things aren’t true. We didn’t go back in. When we were reading about it, ‘right, that’s interesting, we’re not shooting anything right now’. In the delay, we did shoot a day or two before all that, like December or something like that.

We shot the video game scene, which was a bit of fun. We just wanted a bit of humour in the movie so it wouldn’t feel so heavy because when you kill a whole bunch of people, when you destroy London, I mean… That was way before the delay. When the delay happened we literally didn’t shoot anything. We were full-on trying to get 3D and we spent ages. We had over 700 artists and 300 shots. Each shot we needed to make fifteen, twenty different versions. It was a gruelling marathon at all times.

I thought it was funny, it hurt – I was like ‘they don’t know and they’re making up all this stuff!’ Paramount’s rules were don’t say anything and let it ride, we’ll deal with it when we do. When the next trailer came out people were like ‘See they shot more stuff, he’s alive!’ I couldn’t say no he’s still dead because I wanted that to be a surprise too. It was funny just to see how people take it and run with it.

Well it’s good to have that cleared up because that was commonly spread as gospel online. Thanks for this Jon!

Larry Hama, who wrote the comic book, posted on Facebook today that he liked it "a lot" and the "positive outweighs the negative here," so my nervousness is subsiding quite a bit.

Keep in mind, that he was a consultant on the first film and liked it s well. Depending on how you felt about the first move, you my have to take his comments with a grain of salt.

I really like the first movie so I take this as good news.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

It sounds like he wasn't consulted on the second one at all and only got invited to a screening in the last week. When I read what he writes about G.I. Joe and other stuff in general, I get the impression he doesn't really pull punches or get afraid to speak his mind. I'm going to trust him and go in optimistically.

Larry Hama
Saw RETALIATION today, and I loved it. Huge improvement over ROC.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

Adrienne Palicki is all kinds of yummy. Sounds like the 3D had some work put into it, and what I saw with Hansel and Gretel looked pretty good, so I'm interested.

I find it interesting that we will be getting two movies about terrorist organizations taking over the White House and Washington, DC over two consecutive weeks.

Not to mention White House Down in June. 2013 is the year for this, I guess.

So the delay was for 3D editing, not extra shoots. Interesting.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

^ If that was the case, then it probably means the movie they had was actually decent and they just wanted to maximize $$$ amounts wherever possible. Like I said, the 3D actually looks impressive, but given how much time they had to convert, I guess that's expected.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

Hama's full review

"I liked RETALIATION a lot. Vast improvement over ROC. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow are much more up front, and the whole thing is a lot more character-driven. Not only is there no sinking ice, but the big finale involves physical action with people rather than choreography of CGI vehicles. The Rock is perfect as Roadblock, and Bruce Willis's take on Joe Colton is brill (he has some of the best lines.) There's no sign of Scarlett, but the actress who plays Lady Jaye is quite good. Jinx is amazing. Flint is kind of meh. Overall, the direction is terrific and crisp. I can tell what is going on all the time, and everything LOOKS great. Ninja fight sequence in the mountains is amazing, in that you never lose track of what is happening, and there's a ton of fast visual input. Is there stuff I didn't like? That would be quibbling. The positive outweighs the negative here. And I walked out feeling that the characters had been treated with respect."
4 Minute preview is now public:

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

Dammit, I'm getting excited for this again. I want to stay angry and sulk about the delay.

Hama is a cool guy... I got to meet him last year, and he had some great stories. I want to say I recall him saying he hadn't seen the first one.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

Love how honest Hama is being. Especially about Flint. I'd read they dumbed him down to a meager sidekick. So if Larry Hama says the positives outweigh the negatives, I'm looking forward to it.

Funny enough, I had read a while back that despite the filmmakers of the ROC trying to explain away the sinking ice in the audio commentary, someone actually proved that ice would indeed sink like that without the explanation of encrusted metal weighing it down.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

For those few of us that saw the four-minute preview in 3D, it actually looked pretty fuckin' amazing. Hell, it looked better than films shot in 3D like Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz.

I still argue that Chu's Step Up 3D has the best use of 3D for any film that's used the gimmick, so I'm not surprised he took his time to perfect it for the post-conversion.

I will support this movie purely because they held the camera still.

That cliffside ninja fight is either this movie's podrace or it's the tip of the cool iceberg.

I felt the camerawork was still a tad too shaky and tight in parts for my tastes. Restrained, definitely, but it still veers towards the Western style of action cinematography.

But overall that sequence was all kinds of awesome.

Re: G.I.Joe 2 Coming

Just back from a sneak preview at the local military theater (3D, digital projection and sound). I thought it was okay, but not nearly as much fun as the first one. It also felt overall smaller - no big sets, etc. The ninja fight on the side of the mountain was the best fight of the movie. We learn more about Storm Shadow, which was cool. Nice to see Walter Goggin playing Boyd Crowder without the southern accent in his brief appearance. Maybe a 3 out of 5 for me. I thought Jack The Giant Slayer was a solid 4.
