I was thinking today that 10 years from now, GotG is going to be a beloved superhero franchise. Just two years ago a vast majority of people, even us geeks on here, had never heard of this franchise (or had very little knowledge), and now it's going to be huge.

$26m opening weekend, maybe total out at about $160m domestic? I've said it before, and I'll say it again, there is only so much sci-fi the majority of female moviegoers will tolerate. My wife and female friends can be dragged to Iron Man, Captain America, and the Avengers, and they will begrudgingly admit they had a good time. You start to severely lose them with Thor and the Asgaardian stuff (despite his hunkiness), and their eyes ALL completely gloss over whenever a GotG commercial comes on (despite say, my wife's love of Andy from Parks & Rec).

Again, I hope I'm wrong. I'm a big sci-fi guy and there needs to be more hard-core sci-fi movies made (not starring Tom Cruise), but I just don't think this will pull in the numbers unfortunately.

I am also willing to bet based upon WOM, this could also be the first Marvel film outside of Iron Man and The Avengers to cross $300M. Unlike other Marvel films, it has an advantage of zero competition alongside the fact the 2014 summer has been an absolute wasteland of films.

Ouch, $26 million would be worse then Hercules. I'd be surprised if it does less then $45 million, and even that feels a little conservative and think it will be much higher. Marketing for this seems to be everywhere, and I even see toys and merchandise at the Disney store. As for the total domestic, I've mentioned before but I think if it does around Thor/Captain America numbers in the ~$175 million total range they would be happy.

I don't see GOU doing much against GotG. If anything.

TMNT should do good. I think GotG will perform fine if not do great. TMNT though will overtake it most likely but if GotG does solid how much could TMNT do against a solid release? Especially if it does get popular. This'll be interesting to see.

i'd say the majority of people in this thread are very positive in their expectations for the film. Maybe 2-3 being negative because they don't think women will see it, or that their specific group of friends think it looks dumb.
