The Force Awakens is a bullshit title and I'm dissapoint.
I was really hoping for Star Wars: Son of Jar Jar.
I guess I'll just hope for a one-shot movie.

Ranking the Titles:
1.) The Empire Strikes Back
2.) A New Hope
3.) The Phantom Menace
4.) Return of the Jedi
5.) The Force Awakens
6.) Revenge of the Sith
7.) Attack of the Clones
Personally, I like the Force Awakens. Looking objectively at the titles of the last 4 movies - 3 of them had " _______ of the _______" in them. Passive and boring, just like most of the PT.

I would have gone with:
1. The Gathering Darkness
2. Breaking the Republic
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. A New Hope
5. The Empire Strikes Back
6. Return of the Jedi
7. The Force Awakens
I also would have tossed out ep 1/Phantom Menace, made Attack of the Clones into Episode 1: The Gathering Darkness, made Revenge of the Sith into Episode 2: Breaking the Republic, and then Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith would have seen Darth Vader and the Sith hunting down the remaining Jedi and the founding of the rebellion. And no fucking Gungans anywhere.

If we're talking 'darkness' in titles, I've always liked the title 'Darkness Falls.' It was the title of an X-files episode way back in the first season.

That was before we learned the Force is really just a virus ... Or a bacteria. Whatever the hell midichlorians are. Hell, one little evolutionary anomaly and the Jedi would have been zombies instead of magicians.

The midi-chlorians *aren't* the Force. They're antennas for The Force. Your concentrations of midichlorians determine how well you interact with The Force.
It is admittedly a clunky way of telling the story, but The Force itself remains an energy field created by all living beings that binds the universe together. It's still an unexplained, mystical, quasi-religious phenomenon.

Is there anything anybody can say that will make folks like yourself understand why this isn't true?

For a series about restoring a republic, Star Wars sure didn't have much truck with democracy.

If you're not already familiar with them, I would highly recommend J.W. Rinzler's "making of" trilogy of books. The best part about them is that the only sources used for the books are documents and interviews from the actual time period the films were made/released. The Jedi book is especially fascinating as it contains excerpts from the story conferences with Lucas, Kasdan, and Marquand. The short version is that Jedi's story was kinda, sorta slapped together and it's pretty clear that Kasdan was not a fan of the direction it went.

Wait, even before midichlorians, there were still the references that "the Force is strong" with some people. So it's no different, just a very clunky way to explain it.

at this point I'd be down for the entire prequel trilogy to be explained away as a feverish wet dream that Luke had after drinking spoiled blue milk. I'd be like... "huh.... okay whatevs, let's get on with the action."

If you want to see the development of the story, my recommendation is Kaminski's Secret History of Star Wars.
The Force being strong with someone doesn't necessarily mean they were born that way. It could be something you pickup by having the right mindset -- otherwise what's the point of telling someone, "May the Force be with you"? And didn't Obi-wan imply he could train Han if he were open to it?

There are rumors that the new movies will avoid addressing the PT as much as possible but there are also conflicting rumors that a few references are made.
In any case, its not reasonable to expect them to ignore what was, in all reality, a huge financial success that wrapped up less than a decade ago.

The Rinzler books truly are fantastic. I could pore over them for hours at a time, trying to read all the handwritten notes and script corrections. There's so many incredible details.
I don't recall Ben offering to train Han, but in retrospect, I wonder if Han was slightly Force sensitive anyways? A good shot with the blaster and and very good pilot. Maybe some people are slightly luckier than others without being full fledged Jedi?

Well you saw Han dodge that blaster shot from Greedo, no way he does that without being force sensitive.
