I like the names. I guess the "BB" in BB-8 stands for beach ball.

A piece of paper with the word "KIRA" was allegedly hanging on one of the trailers at the Puzzelewood location. Someone took a picture and posted it online. Fans just assumed it was the name (or codename) of Ridley's character. It's a nice female sci-fi name, but feels overused after The Dark Crystal and Deep Space Nine -- not to mention it's one letter removed from Kara/Supergirl. At least Rey is more unique.

I don't mind the names. Yoda. Han Solo. Lando. Nien Nunb. Admiral Ackbar. Wedge Antilles. Porkins(for the fat guy of course). Mon Mothma. General Dodonna.

These names are too ingrained in our collective social consciousness that of course we miss how silly they sound.

Only Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are the "normal" sounding names there.

Did they say Rey and Finn were both first names? Agree that Kira sounds a lot better than Rey. Finn and Rey sound more like last names.

Del Rey.
Huckleberry Finn.

For anyone complaining about the names, then you would have done the same thing for the OT names:

-Princess Leia Organa? Everyone would be saying she is a 'Ho' because of her name.

-Han Solo? Everyone would be saying masturbation jokes that he is always solo and uses his 'hand'

-Obiwan Kenobi? Another name never used in our normal world

-Luke Skywalker? Luke is the only name that people have heard of.

-Lando Calrissean? Sounds like a pimp

-Chewbacca?

-R2D2?

-C3PO?

Don't get me wrong, I though the new ST names sound strange, but were just used to the OT names.

Yoda? Does he yodel or something?

Porkins? Yes, let's name the fat guy after a pig.

Then the spacecraft have lame names too.

X-Wing because the wings are X-shaped.

TIE fighter because it looks like a bow tie.

Star Destroyer and Death Star are lame. Plus, does the Empire hate stars or something? Why are they destroying stars? If the Death Star looks like a small moon, shouldn't it be Death Moon? Wasn't Luke's original name supposed to be Starkiller as well, and then they changed it to Skywalker? (Which really isn't much better really. Does he walk on the sky?)

It would have been funny if out of all the weird names in the Star Wars universe Chewbacca was named "Fred".

What're you, a Minion? I suppose in 1977, "Skywalker" and a loner named "Solo" sounded like cool symbolic names . Certainly nowhere near as dumb as "Sully," "Grace Augustine," "Selfride," "Navi," "Pandora," and "Unobtainium" .

I feel bad now when I think about it, but we used to call the fat kids in elementary school 'Porkins' from Star Wars or 'Pugsly' from the Adams Family.

I don't mean to sound racist or anything, but Admiral Ackbar also sounds a lot like the Muslim prayer "Allah Akbar." That confused the heck out of me when I was young trying to figure out why they were worshiping Admiral Ackbar.

Huh, I thought it was what Kiera Knightley and Natalie Portman said to each other while they were tribbing.

I know it's just that people are surprised by silly names, I think Padme takes the cake. I think I'll make a movie in which Padme Amidala, Frau Blucher & Lloyd Christmas hang out together.

I always found it funny that Lucas threw a temper tantrum over Battlestar Galactica ripping off Star Wars then he goes and rips off Adama.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015, D: Abrams) S: Hamill, Ford, Fis

If the queen's first name was Padme, then why would she try and disguise herself as a handmaiden named Padme? Wouldn't Amidala's first name be pretty well known?

It seems that BB-8 was a practical effect and not CGI. Has that been stated anywhere before?
Here's a portion from an interview with Mark Hammil on the subject. Not really spoilery, but just in case:

Spoiler:
Interviewer: Something to the effect of, “Omigod have you seen the Star Wars trailer? With the crazy lightsaber and the droid that looks like a ball?”

Hammil: [Laughs] I’m sure he loved the new little droid that’s a rolling ball. I’m sure he wants it under the tree this Christmas. They never cease to amaze me with what they’re able to come up with, you know? I said, “How are you ever gonna top R2-D2, the most adorable droid in movie history?” And then they have this new one. I can’t even tell you his name, but you saw it in the trailer. [Editor’s note: the name of the droid has been revealed as BB-8.] And when they were demonstrating how they did this thing, live on set — because it’s not CGI, that’s a live prop — I was just amazed. They let me play around with it. [Laughs] I was running it all around at the creature shop up in Pinewood. I’m telling you, it’s an absolute delight. And not having thought that I’d ever go back there, to go back into that world, is just – I get the chills. It’s just so much fun.
