Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015, Abrams) S: Hamill, Ford, Fisher

GQ magazine just published an exclusive set of new Star Wars photos. It seems they've been keeping a key role in the new movie under wraps until now. It looks like there may be a huge plot in the movie that no one has even guessed yet. These pics may be somewhat spoilerific. View at your own risk...

Kinda surprised that Disney let the Star Wars characters be used in that way.

It actually kind of is. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some controversy about it soon. They obviously couldn't have done it without Disney's permission, so the clearly must've OKed it. I guess they're figuring it's a magazine which won't find it's way to kids with a star who's material is geared towards adults, but still, that is odd.

They just released an early version of the title-crawl for Episode VII - I think they should stick with it...

Turns out Disney and Lucasfilm didn't Okay it and aren't happy with it.

Does this fall under fair use because it's satirical? I'd assume Disney would've sued by now if they could.

I don't buy that Disney is really mad. This is like WWF showmanship. The whole thing's just the early stages of a huge media push.

Yep. More free publicity for Star Wars. They just have to say they're mad about it because the pictures with their characters are somewhat inappropriate.

The droids and Chewbacca look awfully authentic. Do you think Disney loaned them out, then got cold feet when the pictures came out?

You greatly underestimate the power of cosplayers. There's a group dedicated solely to making astromechs (like R2-D2). It probably took the editors about half an hour to find people with those costumes.

The Chewbacca looks pretty bad actually. Here is a different version of the cover with Chewbacca on it:

In fact, isn't the Artoo used in the film made by one of those people?

All of the physical droids in the new film (including BB-8) are made by Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, who were fans building their own homemade droids before Lucasfilm saw their creations and hired them for the movies.
