Let's talk Lawrence of Arabia. Everyone talks about Omar Sharif's entrance in that film. It IS an incredible example of the strengths of large format film. But there are other, much more intimate scenes that are also improved by 70 mm. Two that stand out are Lawrence's introduction in the basement. You can read the maps on the wall, you can see the stitches in the seams of his uniform, you can pear through the tiny windows and see the hoofs of the camels passing by outside. Another standout moment is when he meets with Alec Guinness's character in the tent. The wind blowing outside makes the tent sway, you can see every fiber in the Persian rugs they are sitting on, it's so detailed.

Back to Hateful 8. The stew. The wooden spoons knocking around in the bowls, I wanted a bowl so badly. There's was a moment when I thought the film might be veering toward the idea that Minnie and Dave were in the stew and I felt sick. Thank god that wasn't the case. Nonetheless the detail is so great.

That would have been fucked up!

Re: The Hateful Eight (Tarantino, 2015) — The Reviews Thread — SPOILERS

Even though it didn't need to be in 70mm, I'm glad it was. Honestly, I think Tarantino chose 70mm just because he always wanted to, and the clock is definitely ticking on movies being shot and released on film at all. Hell, as it is, projector parts had to be purchased off of E-bay and qualified projectionists had to be coaxed out of retirement. Imagine he took the usual 3 years to release his next movie, which was more scenic and what we expect from 70mm films. Could it even be done in 2018? I don't think he wanted to take that chance, and it was now or never for his throwback "roadshow" film. But like others have said, I felt I was actually at Minnie's Haberdashery, and I'm not sure if you get the same effect with the standard 2.35:1 ratio and digital projection. Especially the way theaters now reduce the screen size for scope movies, rather than extend to the sides.

The movie got one thing right for me....the hatred. I hated this movie from start to finish. Had such high hopes, but it was just awful. Truly awful.

I was pretty disappointed in this. Pacing was slow, story was weak. As expected it was shot well, and some sequences were very well done. Acting was OK, but nobody stood out as giving an exceptional performance.

Re: The Hateful Eight (Tarantino, 2015) — The Reviews Thread — SPOILERS

Went and saw the film in Digital yesterday evening with one of my best friends. The previous three times were all in 70mm.

I noticed a handful of differences between the Wide/Theatrical release and the 70mm Roadshow, some that have been mentioned, others I haven't seen yet:

Spoiler:

-In Roadshow version, Ruth asks Bob about the half-plucked chicken, makes a comment on how it's bad luck and then has Bob finish plucking it. In the Theatrical Cut, it's just a few seconds between scenes of Bob finishing up plucking the chicken.

-The entire stable sequence is much longer when the stagecoach shows up early on at Minnie's. Added sequences of Mannix pulling in the horses, each member of the group (outside) walking all the horses to the stable, O.B. speaking about setting up a route to the Outhouse and the Outhouse scene with Mannix as well.

-Various small sequences where camera shots linger a bit longer, such as the transition from the group outside to the window where Joe Gage is sitting, the signal from Oswaldo to Joe before the massacre at Minnie's, etc.

-Some sound cues that I didn't remember hearing in the Roadshow Version, such as Daisy singing loudly during the scene Major Warren is walking up to the stove to get coffee and notices the Jellybean on the ground.

-The start of Daisy's song with the guitar playing, starts with a different camera shot. When Daisy plays in the Roadshow version it starts facing the side of her face and stays there (while playing with Depth of Field). In the Theatrical cut, the camera shot is of her whole body for a few verses then transitions to the shot of her from the side/close-up.

I'm sure I missed a few more, but those are the ones I immediately noticed.

I guess this movie is a testament to the greatness of the perception of art. No opinion is wrong, and people just experience things completely differently. I think it is by far his worst movie and actually quite bad (almost Scary Movie bad) in the last act. I cannot imagine watching this again. Yet you have seen it 4 times and Inri seems to think it is the greatest movie ever. Really makes you marvel at movies that are universally loved and how insanely difficult that is to accomplish.

Greatest movie ever, nope. Best film QT has done since Jackie Brown and one of the best of 2015, yes. It's OK, I feel the same way about Kill Bill, I don't get all the praise and think it's QT's worst film.

In the trailer, there is a shot of Maj. Warren's red underwear bounty being thrown off the top of the wagon that wasn't in the wide version. Was that scene/shot in the roadshow or only in the trailer?

I'm in the camp of really enjoying this movie. Not sure where I would rank it in terms of Tarantino's filmography. I think it's his least "fun" movie, but "fun" isn't the sole criteria. The flashback of the slaughter at the cabin is absolutely heartbreaking. That whole sequence might be the best scene Tarantino has ever done.

Interesting, I don't think that shot was in either (released) version of the film. Most likely just the trailer.

Saw it again in 70mm at Alamo draft house in Austin. I enjoyed it a little more than I did the first time, but that could be because I had consumed about 4-5 house made The Hateful 8 drinks as well as a few Big Kahunas.

Was there enough score to fill a double LP? I guess there was, but it didn't seem like it.

EDIT: According to the track listing Samuel L Jackson wrote the Lincoln letter. Is that true?

I haven't opened my vinyl set yet but in the film
Spoiler:
it was a fake written by his character. I don't know if Jackson wrote it in real life. I think QT did.

Re: The Hateful Eight (Tarantino, 2015) — The Reviews Thread — SPOILERS

A guitar that was destroyed in the movie was a genuine article, 145 years old, on loan to the film from the Martin company's museum collection.

This article contains minor, non-plot spoilers, which I will be discussing below.

https://reverb.com/blog/cf-martin-re...eful-eight-set

You can see moment of it's destruction in crappy cam quality here, same minor spoiler warning applies: https://youtu.be/yWzHT7dpyhg?t=212

Spoiler:

Watching the film, Daisy's reaction struck me as very out of character, and now I know why.

I'm not sure keeping the shot was a good idea. One could argue that it gave her character a bit of depth, I know I thought "she must really love music or something", but it's never built upon anywhere else in the film.

I have the feeling Tarantino included it only because it was "real" even though it didn't really fit the scene.

I want to call BS. If it was truly priceless and irreplaceable then a museum rep would've been there to safeguard the guitar when it wasn't being used on set. And insured for original cost and not replacement cost? Again, hard to believe.

The comments are kind of ridiculous, saying Tarrantino did it as a publicity stunt. If that was the case, why would the story be coming out with the film practically out of theaters?

Not every museum can afford to fly some dude out to watch over a piece 24/7. They're not the Smithsonian. It's a small museum nobody's heard of that's attached to their manufacturing company.

Plus, Tarantino did this type of thing before, buying legitimate old cars for Death Proof, then having them smashed up on film. He said himself, if he told the dealers what he intended to do with them, they never would have sold them.

In hindsight the museum should've had the studio either pick up the tab or hire a security person. If something is priceless and irreplaceable, I wouldn't be handing it over to Tarantino. Spielberg, yes... Tarantino, no

Reminds of a Prince story. I think it was on Fallon. He borrowed a guitar that belonged to one of Fallon's band members and he smashed it at the end of his performance. Turned out it was a priceless Gibson or something.

Yeah, they could have made other arrangements, but I assume they put some trust into the production. As for Spielberg - he got to handle Lincoln's actual stovepipe hat (with gloves), which must have been really cool to experience.
