What the fuck will DC do if this is an unexpected success?

Gunn already presented an "in" that Blue Beetle could be part of his current universe.

But it would be great if this is actually good and does well. Anything this toku-inspired doing well is awesome to me...

It could be good but I see no scenario where it does well in theaters.

"The first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle and the first full DCU movie is Superman."
I haven't read any spoilers, but is Blue Beetle somehow tied to the Snyderverse to make that statement make sense?

I haven't seen the movie either, but I'd say Blue Beetle is the first movie under the new regime with a main character who didn't appear before, but the movie itself wasn't produced under the new regime.

The movie was originally an HBO Max feature with no known ties to the Snyderverse. Then it got bumped to a theatrical feature. However, Ángel Manuel Soto has recently claimed there are intentional homages to the Snyderverse throughout this film.

Copied from the BO thread:

I'm going to guess it does worse than HM. I mean that movie set a really low bar. Cocaine Bear had about an equivalent opening weekend. It'll definitely do worse than Flash or Shazaam! Kids are back in school and nobody knows who TF Blue Beetle is. I'm going to guess $22 million.

I hope it does well but I'm not expecting Blue Beetle to make any waves at the box offfice. It's best hope is kids think it's a Marvel movie and mistakenly go see it for that.

The DC screens are packed for the weekend at my AMC. The IMAX ones not so much. I don't even know if I'm going to be able to see it this weekend at all.

Given I couldn't think of a single recent movie title and searching Google only resulted in Hannah Montana, I give up. What does HM mean?

Haunted Mansion from Disney.

I don't think Blue Beetle will be as disastrous as this one.

This is gonna flop hard. The two evening showings tonight near me have a total of 3 tickets sold between them.

The two evening showings tomorrow have 2 sold.

It was already being discussed in the BO thread which is why I abbreviated. Shows how good a job they did on the marketing

I guess we'll see soon enough but I think a lot more people know what the Haunted Mansion is than who Blue Beetle is. Of course that doesn't translate exactly into what the BO will be like but it was a pretty well known property that completely flopped.

This made me curious, so I checked out the on-line booking of my local theatre. Across the 4 showings of Blue Beetle Friday night, so far 32 seats have been booked. For the 4 showings of Barbie, 144 seats are booked. Just for fun, I also looked at the 3 showings of Haunted Mansion, which is 29 seats booked.

Re: DC's Blue Beetle (2023, D: Soto) - S: Xolo Maridueña

I decided to go check out the last showing of the day and I’m glad I did. Absolutely wonderful movie. 100% a Latino film through and through put in the mold of your average superhero origin story. Xolo Mariduena has phenomenal charisma (way more than on Cobra Kai) and is the heart and soul in a movie about heart, soul and family.

The CGI is leagues beyond The Flash and there’s a lot the trailer doesn’t even begin to touch on. The soundtrack is a mix of Latino music and a crazy ethereal score.

What it loses points for are the tired superhero tropes that bog down half the final act. It’s obvious where it’s ending is headed and it never deviates.

What makes it a must see is it being a big budget blockbuster that offers audiences the condensed truths about the adversity Latino families face at the hands of a capitalist world. It’s astounding DC has bungled the portrayal of ethnic minorities so much before because this is a home run.

The score by Bobby Krlic brought to mind Daft Punk's work on Tron Legacy. I loved it and am pissed it's not on CD.

Saw this last night and I definitely agree with much of what you mentioned.

I really enjoyed the earlier scenes involving the Blue Beetle and not so much the later ones, which as you mentioned follow a fairly pre-determined path.

The film is at its strongest when its focusing on Jaime Reyes & his family (who are all well cast), especially regarding themes of displacement, gentrification and generational trauma.

I also was surprised at how likeable George Lopez was in this film!
