Re: Madame Web (2024, D: Clarkson) S: Dakota Johnson

Going to be honest, I was hoping folks would indicate that this film was a pleasant surprise. Sigh...it sounds like the film is rather lifeless. Colliders review calls out some particularly bland dialogue from early in the film.

Dagnabit, I really wanted an excuse to give this film a chance. Oh well.

Another tax write off for Sony. It would seem they spent some money just to keep the IP in their hands.

If they keep releasing all these lifeless super-hero films, it really makes me wonder just how bad Batgirl truly was. I mean...it couldn't have been as bad a Morbius, right?

Different company, and Batgirl was supposed to be streaming only, plus there was perfect timing for the write off. I don't think it had to do much with quality.

Dakota wore a similar web inspired bodysuit type dress at the Brazil premiere to show off her stick figure.

And again on Seth Meyers show.

I know it was a different company but so many sub-par superhero releases have come about since Black Widow started the trend, no big loss in releasing it at this point, critically at least. They could have taken a chance with it, streaming or not but I guess the cost of it really was that prohibitive. It was actually one of the few new heroes I had a genuine interest in. Oh well.

I liked Black Widow This seems more on par with standard Sony comic book movie, what with Bloodshot, Ghost Rider, Venom 1/2 and Morbius.

I know a lot of people did. But it was the domino that started the downfall in quality (strictly my opinion).

And I had no idea there was a Bloodshot movie. How did I miss that?

Re: Madame Web (2024, D: Clarkson) S: Dakota Johnson

I'm disappointed that the reviews aren't better, but have gone to a couple "Bad" movies in the past few weeks and thought they were worth the $5 or $10 I paid to see them.

I normally go to 2 movies at a time when I decide to go to the theater.

I saw Argylle followed with Poor Things, in part because of Emma Stone and the great reviews.

Anyone care to recommend which movie I could pair Madame Web with?

1. Bob Marley: One Love
2. Anyone but You---kind of a Sydney Sweeney double feature perhaps?
3. Lisa Frankenstein--heard it was weird, but I like the writer and I know it's directed by Zelda (Robin's daughter) Williams

A double feature of Sweeney's double features sounds like an ideal pairing.

I would see Anyone But You. I've seen it twice. At least you may get some laughs to balance the two. And it's the best reviewed of the 3.

Thanks for the reply. Anyone But You was already on my radar anyway... Should be fun.

Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde surprisingly gave it a sorta positive review. She liked it better than The Marvels, which she hated. Both of them are Los Angeles-based movie critics. She writes for RogerEbert.com

Sony hired the same writers as Morbius for this. What did they expect?

It's almost like that when Sony actually makes a good Spider-man related film (e.g. Into the Spider-Verse), it's a happy accident that wasn't supposed to happen.

It still boggles my mind that apparently they could make a Miles Morales (or Spider Gwen) live action movie but just refuse to. I'm not sure how well received Spiderverse would have been if they didn't have like any of the main spider-characters but just C and D tier instead.

Yeah, both Spider-Gwen or Miles Morales would be far more desirable. Hell hire Nicolas Cage and have him do a live action Spider-Man Noir (half kidding but also kinda serious).

Venom is the only character they’ve made into solo films thus far that makes sense and on paper could work. Just neither movie was very good.

I've said it before that they should have made a Miles Morales movie when Tom Holland took over as Peter. Let him exist in the MCU world and have your own Spider-Man franchise that can exist separately.

Which is, of course, what happened with the Spiderverse movies (and I love them) but it's wild that Sony went "naw, let's do Venom without any Spider-Man connection" instead.

Are you talking about Matt Ramos? Everyone online thinks he’s a Marvel shill. I saw that he said it sucked.

I ended up canceling my ticket today. I’m in no rush.

Well until recently I think most of us thought that there was some contractual agreement that they couldn't use Miles except in animated form, but they basically came out and said "no, we could've this whole time." Like you couldn't have cast Steinfeld for a live action Gwen movie before she did Hawkeye?

Good god no. I will take their near perfection Spider-Verse series over whatever awfulness live action they would come up with.

Wait was there an agreement that Sony couldn’t use Miles other than in animation? I don’t know that I’ve heard that before. I also don’t see how that could really be since Sony owns anything related to Spider-Man on film. Not sure why they’d agree to that either.

I obviously know there’s the agreement with Marvel Studios but I thought that only pertained to Peter Parker Spider-Man.

Maybe it was me but I just assumed there was, considering they used Peter Parker Spider-man in Spiderverse (multiple versions). Otherwise why not make, you know, a Spider-man movie with Miles instead of Venom, Morbius, the Sinister Six, Madame Web and Kraven without any Spider-man? Or Spider-gwen or Jessica Drew (who has to have more of a recognition factor than... Madame Web)

I mean it’s Sony. Lord knows why they make half the decisions they do.

Rothman is willing to gamble on these smaller (< $100M) Spidey spin offs. I would think a Miles live action movie budget would be similar to the Holland films and they're not ready to spend that yet. They no longer look at the domestic box office, they are more concerned with the global box office results.

I would think the budget for all of these crappy spinoff films that are bombing would be fairly close to what a good Miles or Gwen movie would cost. Either of those would probably have a better shot at making a profit and for sequels. Maybe I’m wrong.
