Your under-appreciated favorites?

Re: Your under-appreciated favorites?
So many Paul Schrader movies would qualify, but I’ll pick Light Sleeper (1992). One of Willem Dafoe’s best and most heartbreaking performances. He’s really under-appreciated in his own right. I’d go so far as saying he’s the best English-speaking living actor without an Oscar working today.

Stir of Echoes (1999) - I think this one got overshadowed by The Sixth Sense, but is the better "I see dead people" movie.
Animal Crackers (1930) - Not the best known Marx Brothers movie, but to me it's more rewatchable than some of their others.
Ride the High Country (1962) - IMO, this is Peckinpah's other masterpiece.

Yeah, it’s a damn fun movie. And speaking of under-appreciated, Kevin Bacon has proven to be a great horror movie actor who doesn’t get enough appreciation for this roles.

Twice Upon a Time is one of my favorite movies of ALL time. It’s so weird and funny. I got the VHS of it relatively recently because it was the only way to see it.
Knight and Day is some peak Cruise and a fun watch.
The Accountant is a fantastic action movie and has great performances from everyone involved. I put this one on in the background a lot.
Bring It On is one of the most quotable comedies of the last 25 years.

Re: Your under-appreciated favorites?
Okay, a lot of folks are dropping quality films in this thread as under-appreciated favorites, but I am going to drop a title of a film that is not "good," but in fitting with the spirit of this thread, is a favorite of mine. I just finished my at least 4th or 5th viewing of Man Of The House from 2005, the Tommy Lee Jones comedy.
I love this film, and it has a great cast, plenty of action, and a nice bit of heart to the film. It also looks really great in HD on Max.

Re: Your under-appreciated favorites?
edTV…I know this came out a year after Truman Show and while they’re similar in concept, I think edTV is quite charming. Jenna Elfman was super cute. Really good addendum to Truman Show. This played for laughs. Truman Show certainly didn’t. But, edTV deserves more credit. I thought Ellen was great as was Rob Reiner. Love that Ron Howard uses his family and friends. Seeing Donny Most was great. Clint Howard always great and peculiar. Nice little comedy with heart.

I’ll throw in another one that’s not super high quality but still deserves more love: Jane Austen’s Mafia!
It’s directed by one of the guys that did Airplane! and is a spoof of the Godfather films and has some of the silliest lines that my wife and I have been quoting at each other for over 20 years.
And I know Wes Anderson is fairly well known but I feel like his Fantastic Mr Fox doesn’t get enough attention. It’s literally one of my most watched movies and is for sure my most watched Criterion title.
My wife got me a birthday card the other day with a stylized fox on it that was very reminiscent of the movie’s look.

I’m currently watching David Fincher’s imo classic The Game. This movie is unbelievable from start to finish. Of course, the spoilers wear off, but it’s still great on repeat viewings. It seems no one talks about this one.

Re: Your under-appreciated favorites?
I'm not sure I mentioned it (didn't feel like going over the whole thread again, I just know I posted about Hell Night as a fave 80s slasher), but just like Hell Night is a favorite in all the clones of Halloween and Friday the 13th that came out, my favorite of the 80s teen sex comedies that came in the Porky's and Fast Times era is 1982's Losin' It. For one thing, it serves as a time piece of what was to come for two actors; Tom Cruise is still a bit chubby and plays an unconfident dork, but it was clear he had leading man talent. It's just so weird to see him in a role where he's not cocky and brash. Conversely, Jackie Earle Haley was supposed to be the desired "bad boy" when he was a teen in The Bad News Bears, but when it was clear that he was never going to be taller than 5 and a half feet, and was losing his hair already, that his future was creeps and villains. Which he plays here perfectly.
It's not over the top hilarious like Porky's but there's a lot of funny moments (Haley's character trying to explain "spanish fly" to a non-English speaking pharmacist is the highlight for me) and by the end you really feel like you spent the night in Tijuana. In both a good and bad way.

In the mid 80s I took a film appreciation class for easy credits. One of the films was "The Best Years of Our Lives" probably a 16mm print. A well deserved best picture winner that's forgotten today.
My Dad served in the military in WW2 in Europe. He never spoke of it. As we drift into 1930's Germany there is no Greatest Generation to save us.

I pick this up as a blind buy and really enjoyed it. My first time seeing Ben Foster also Norman Reedus in a small role.
