Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion
My favorite Oscar moments are the awkward ones, and the only major one we got was the woman GODZILLA winner's face collapsed when she realized this idiot was going to ramble until he was dragged off. Kudos to the director for cutting to a close-up of the (I assume deceased relative) photo she was holding after she realized she wasn't going to have a chance to speak and held the picture out to try and get it seen.

the show was ok. not bad, not great. kinda ho hum. JK was playing it very safe. no real surprises. wish Lily Gladstone had won though. other than that was happy for the winners who won. is Stone the youngest ever to win 2 Oscars?

Stone's not even close to being the youngest. Billie Eilish actually set the record last night at age 22. But if you're just talking best actress, then there are multiple who were younger. Remember, Stone's 35 and there was a time not that long ago in Hollywood when that was considered old.

She wasn’t waiting to speak, so her face didn’t collapse. The speaker was the film’s director and visual effects supervisor. She was his co-visual effects supervisor (she worked on the effects in nearly all of his movies). His speech, as written, was actually short, but doing it in English slowed him down and led to some rough pronunciations (he would’ve been faster with a translator, but at least he tried).

The In Memorium segment really sucked for reasons already mentioned but also on their choices on who gets featured and who doesn't. Burt Young, who was nominated for best supporting actor and is in some classic films, is thrown onto the last card with 50 others, (which you had 3 seconds to read), while Richard Lewis gets featured who is more known for his TV work.

I only watched the VFX category, so I was a little disappointed with Schwarzenegger and DeVito. When Danny addresses Keaton, I was hoping Arnold would have asked "Who the fuck is this?"

^ Yeah, a simple “He looks a little different” from Arnold would have sufficed.
I loved seeing Al Pacino but it seems like the Academy is TRYING to create another “Moonlight” moment by continually bringing out actors who seem to have mentally checked out years ago to announce BP.

All of their interviews have been in Japanese or with an interpreter. All the excitement and nervousness just made it really hard to focus on something he probably tried to rehearse a few times. I give him credit for trying to address everyone in English because he seems like a really nice and humble guy.

I wished Gladstone won and Scorsese films for the most part get screwed at the Oscars

And they show everything from a distance and why not just show the photos of the people in full screen or something close to it?
The songs were super short except for the Ken song and what was up with that?

Jimmy is so good at hosting this show. A total pro.
For all his complaining ahead of time, still haven't seen Jeff weigh in yet. Maybe he's not up yet?
If this was John Mullaney auditioning for the hosting job in the future, he passed with flying colors. Wouldn't mind him hosting next year.

He was ok but it is getting boring with him hosting every year and go for Mulaney if he wants the job or a actor or actress or a combo of a man and a woman
Next year do the show in February and before DST happens please!
In the 90's they could get away with that since DST was in April.

Same. I did not like "Poor Things" at all. I'm not a fan of any of Yorgos Lanthimos' films. I love weird, but he's too weird even for me.
Yeah, that was insane. I had to pause and back up just to see who was on the screen because it was so far away.

I am reticent to break this news to the people on this forum, but the vast majority of people watching both at home and in the theater do not give a shit about all these old people they have never heard of, who have died. They want to be reminded of the famous people who have passed, so they can feel some fleeting fondness for their memory. They do not try to concentrate people's attention on a full screen montage of the over 100 people who died because people would not watch it, and they don't want to waste the valuable TV time.

Before Eilish and O’Connell’s record-setting victory, only three people had won two Oscars by the age of 30, all of which came from the Best Actress category. Luise Rainer won back-to-back Oscars in 1937 and 1938 for her performances in “The Great Zigfield” and “The Good Earth,” achieving her second win at age 28. Jodie Foster won for “The Accused” in 1989 at age 26 and “The Silence of the Lambs” in 1992 at age 29. Hilary Swank won her Oscars for “Boys Don’t Cry” in 2000 and “Million Dollar Baby” in 2005, winning her second at age 30.

I see one person gave the broadcast 1 star. It must have taken away valuable time from his reality dating shows and thousands of hours of DVR backlog.
Overall, I thought it was a solid, but unspectacular broadcast. I don't know what it means "play to safe" which some people are referring to here. I mean this is The Oscars, why does it need to be edgy or take risks? I mean maybe you can say the John Cena bit was a little edgy? But, overall it was a pretty good broadcast except for some minor fumbles (Pacino) and a segment they just can't get right (In Memoriam)
and it actually finished on time despite starting late.

One of the low-key best jokes of the night was when Kimmel told a stage hand to rip up the envelope after Stone won Best Actress and only BP Award remained. It was an extra Best Actress - Emma Stone envelope handed to Warren Beatty that caused the La La Land - Moonlight flub.
