You know what? It just hit me. They must have infused A LOT of their personalities in the movies' characters.

It was to emphasize Altman's penchant for overlapping dialog. I loved it. I could have watched more. But then I am a big Altman fan.

I tried to enjoy this years Oscar telecast, but it was difficult to watch without getting a headache… the sound was a little out of sync with the picture during the entire show... it was like watching a poorly dubbed foreign film.

This area HAS to have the worst ABC affiliate in the country. Not only was the sound slightly out of sync, but the picture looked "washed out" (overly bright). No, it wasn't my television... all other channels looked fine.

I personally thought that was a joke. All three awards should have gone to either WOTW or Narnia. Kong brought nothing new to the table(FX or sound-wise) and shouldn't have been rewarded as such.

Anybody else read ESPN's "The Sports Guy" theory on how "Crash" upset "Brokeback Mountain":

Part of me still thinks Jack Nicholson saw "Brokeback Mountain" on the winner card, took a deep breath, said to himself "Screw it, I hated that movie," called an audible and said, "And the Oscar goes to ... Crash!"

FYI - Larry McMurtry wrote The Last Picture Show (novel & screenplay), Texasville (novel), and Terms of Endearment (novel) among many other things. He's also like 70 years old. Cut him some slack!

Have you seen Hustle & Flow? If not, then you probably don't understand the maginitude the song plays in the film. That in itself was a strong reason for it to win the award.

I was thinking the same thing when he said "Crash."

I seriously thought the same thing. However, that is why Pricewaterhouse Coopers gets paid the big bucks - to ensure that the right winner is read. They would have rushed the stage to correct the mistake. Of course it was the very end of the broadcast so who knows? There is still that rumor that Marissa Tomei was mistakenly announced the year she won...

I only got to see part of the awards last night and missed a segment I always like to watch - the tribute to those who have died.

Is there anyplace to see that clip online or something?

Strong disagreement... on Narnia anyway. I wouldn't have had a problem with WofW winning though.

I'm very aware of what he wrote, so you don't have to educate me. And in my opinion he did not seem happy to be there unlike most of the other people that won. Robert Altman is also very old, and he was awesome and seemed truly honored to be getting an oscar that he had known about for some time. So age has nothing to do with it.

That's just dumb.

He was obviously stunned, because BBM has won the majority of the 'Picture' awards this season. Did you see his 'Woah' mouthing afterwards? How many weren't stunned that Crash won, really?

Totally agree with you. I watched it on DVD, and I have to admit that I had to get up midway through the movie, take my dog for a walk and watch a Patti Smith concert I have before I forced myself to continue the film. I just felt like it was insulting me.

I would have been happy with any of the other Best Picture nominees winning. Brokeback wasn't my fave film of the year, but I would have been pleased had it won. Hell, I think there were some movies that were nominated in other categories besides Best Picture that were more deserving than Crash.

Like someone else said, the Academy went with the incredibly safe choice, picking mediocrity over anything else. This might start a flame war against me, but it reminds me of when Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show and Shawshank Redemption. But it will probably get more comparisons to when Dances With Wolves beat GoodFellas, since GoodFellas swept almost all Best Picture awards before being beaten by the mediocre Dances With Wolves.

Sorry if this has been posted, RE Brokeback Mountain:

It is the first film to EVER lose the Oscar for Best Picture after winning the BAFTA, DGA, GG, PGA, and WGA.

And there's always a first time. Glad "Crash" won. . .it's not an upset on the scale of a No. 16 beating a No. 1 seed, however -- which has NEVER happened! (Time for March Madness!)

they had performed 1 minute before winning.

I've heard lots of comments like this, but no one seems to have had a problem with Larry McMurtry's Jeans.

Yeah, you'd think, except that on Oprah's Oscar post-show her friend/puppet Gayle interviewed Jack and said he told her he had voted for "Brokeback" and was really surprised it didn't win. He was also very hammered when they talked, but that's what he supposedly told her. Nothing was mentioned during their on-camera interview about who he voted for. I like how he obviously shows up every year because they always let him present a big award, and there's free alcohol.

Whoever mentioned the lack of old timers/legends in attendance forgot about good ol' Mickey Rooney, in attendance as always. I saw a shot of him in the audience at one point. Nice to see him still around at 85. He's got to be one of very few stars still alive who began their Hollywood careers around the time of the Depression.

I was glad Reese Witherspoon won. She was great in Walk The Line, and she have a really good acceptance speech. She's too cute.

I knew Phillip Seymour Hoffman would win, but I was pulling for Heath Ledger or Joaquin Phoenix.

Crash was a good movie, and once Ang Lee won for best director, I was pretty sure Brokeback Mountain wouldn't win Best Picture.

Did anyone else catch Jennifer Garner when she almost tripped?

Fight the Power may be built on samples but I bet you can't listen to it and name all the sources. Because an artist used them as raw materials and built a new collage. The "No samples" rule is actually just an interpretation of the "original song" category. Someone determined that a certain percentage of the song must be original, as if such a thing can be measured and as if a song like "A Whole New World" or "My Heart Will Go On" is actually "original" and not just the same schlock that always gets played in movies. It's all crazy.
Influenced by - Direct copy of. Apple meet orange.

I guess what bugs me the most is how callously sampling/stealing is done, as if it's no big deal.

I guess it's nothing new. For the most part, the next generation usually craps on the last generation's accomplishments. With any luck, you'll live long enough to see the generation after yours do the same thing to yours.

Have a nice day.

As to your point-- If playing a song written by someone else and talking or yelling over it passes for music in your mind, then God bless ya.

And if it makes me 'small-minded' in your mind, because I won't follow the PC line and say 'oh, how wonderful' when someone steals and craps on someone else's creative accomplishment, then I guess you've got me pegged.

Good day.

I would be willing to bet that if you took a poll of 1,000 people across the country, the majority of people would have never heard of them. I don't think I'm alone in that.
