My Stewart reaction. I felt he did good. He didn't do an all out assault on the right like some predicted. His jokes are the type that are very subtle, they aren't cheap laugh loud but don't really think about type jokes. Fucking Hollywood people are up tight and and have no sense of humour if you judge Stewart's jokes on their reaction. It seems that at this point, the only one Hollywood claps for is Crystal.

Not to get in the middle of your debate but...there is a big difference between being influenced by the greats, using a specific style and creating your own sound versus taking something that is already existing(Robert Johnson CD), dropping the vocals(or some element) and rapping overtop of the music or beat that remains. Where's the originality in that? I see a big difference in the two.

Because you're simplfying it. Not all samples are just a stolen sound looped. A really creative sample is used in a whole new way, new context, etc... The samples on PE albums or Paul's Boutique or Endtroducing are mindblowingly original in their use. I agree that bad sampling is bad, but that's true of anything. The fundamental difference is almost semantic: The actual physical use of a pre-existing source versus "recreating" something someone else wrote with your own hands. But that's not the entire creative process right there.

But you're right. This isn't the thread. And it's really moot because it has nothing to do with Hard Out Here For a Pimp.

In their defense, they had JUST got done with their performance just a minute earlier. Based on the way the performances were being "themed" I'd imagine it wouldn't have made sense for them to perform in tuxes even if they wanted to.

Speaking of musical numbers, during the Crash song number... did I really see two of the interpretive dancers re-enacting the

scene? Or was supposed to be something else? It would have been on the left side of the screen when they did the wide shot, early in the number.

Honestly, I love that Crash #. I downloaded the song as soon as it was done and I had never heard it before. It probably had the most impact on me of anything on stage last night.

As long as I can own a DVD for less than the price of a single movie ticket (and even resell it later and recoup some of that if I wish), I can't see ever going to the theater again unless it's for a very special movie. But boo-hoo for Hollywood.

I thought it was hysterical. I could watch the two of them read from a phone book.

I don't think it panned out as they were hoping. An homage to Altman and the musings his characters often possess. Both women star in his upcoming A Prairie Home Companion.

Maybe you should quit it. There's nothing you can say that will change facts.
I don't listen to most rock after the mid 1990's because it sounds almost identical to music from the mid to late 1960's through the late 1980's. People are still ripping off Pearl Jam after 15 years.

So, I still think Gustavo should have hugged Salma for the entire minute he had for a speech after winning for original score.

Same here. I've owned the DVD since November, but haven't seen the movie still (shame on me), but that song is the kind that adds another layer to the impact of a film.

It went on a little too long, but the first portion was still funny.

3-6 Mafia - I don't mind the song winning, or even being nominated, but take a look around fellas, this ain't the Source or MTV awards. Rent a fucking tux.
Like someone else said, they had just performed a song that would've seemed unusual for them to be sporting tuxes (or even dress clothes) during.

I thought it was supposed to be sort of "stream of consciousness" improv. Doesn't Altman often try to get the actor to find the character so they say things in the manner the actor believes the character would say it without scripting it? They were definitely NOT scripted like most presenters were at the podium.

Hopefully this hasn't already been pointed out:
Crash is the lowest grossing movie to win the best picture award in almost two decades...since Last Emperor in 1987.

There were other signs Brokeback was going to lose last night:

It lost in all 3 of its acting categories, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress.

It lost to Memoirs of a Geisha for Cinematography, which many thought it had locked that up too. It wasn't even nominated for Film Editing, which usually goes to the Best Picture winner.

From a technical standpoint, they thought it wasn't the best.

Once Geisha was announced for Cinematography, I thought there might be an upset looming.

And a big for Kong winning 3 Oscars and getting revenge on Narnia.

Exactly. Crash was ab bit too trite and heavy handed for me. It was an R rated Afterschool Special.

You know what, even though I liked the Crash song better I'm glad 3-6 mafia won. After watching the clip again, those guys seem genuinely happy that they won and that was great to see as opposed to those two bitter, miserable people who won for adapted screenplay for Brokeback.

They didnt seem miserable to me.
The song that won was one of the worst ever on an Oscar show.
