It's actually filmed in a warehouse somewhere in L.A. So its plausible.

When Lacey said the line about "not just another pretty face" we had to pause the DVR we were laughing so hard.

This is true. My wife and I were patrons in last year's season premiere (She was on screen for a few seconds saying the appetizers were good. I never got a close up - I'm too hideous for TV). The restaurant is a converted warehouse tucked away behind the Granada America offices in LA.

Free wine, soda and bread all night long while you wait. Needless to say, plenty of people got smashed. Granada was cool enough to offer rides home to people who couldn't drive.

I've always assumed that it's free, so the people that complain are either complete and total jerks for complaining about something they're getting for free or it's all for dramatic effect.

^Definitely for dramatic effect.

But I mean, are we really watching Hell's Kitchen for the cooking?

No. That's what Top Chef is for.

Re: Hell's Kitchen -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- Premieres 1/29/09

People do walk out. We waited til the last minute and the waiters told us the kitchen was closed and nothing else was coming out. When they aired the episode, they made it look like everyone had left first THEN Ramsey shut it down. Totally done for dramatic effect.

The producers of the show encouraged people to go up and "complain" if the felt they had to. It made better TV.

You don't pay for anything. They paid us at the end of the night. Everyone got $40 each and we signed our lives away.

And we drank a lot. Lotta drunk people stumbling around at the end of the night.

Re: Hell's Kitchen -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- Premieres 1/29/09

I've watched quite a few of the earlier seasons recently

Love this show ! but i think Ramsay has too much of the power. He always decides who goes, hell if he doesn't like the nominees, he even overrides the decision and nominates then eliminates who he wants !
And of course he decides the ultimate winner

Need to be some kind of viewer vote

I would really like to see a couple of genuinely competent chefs on the show for a change. I know the mix of the personalities is important, but still

Good Lord No!! Part of the fun of this show is Ramsay having the power in making all the choices. I respect Gordon's opinion about these knuckleheads and how they evolve as Chefs in the next 15 weeks, then some idiot who dials an 800 number.

AMEN! That is what makes it fun. If you want an "America decides" show, there's a little program called American Idol which just so happens to dominate the FOX scheduling line-up on the rest of the week for that kind of drivel.

Agreed, 100%. Gordon may make some emotional decisions on who he boots sometimes, but he always has a plan.

Viewers voting worked well if you remember the first season of Big Brother.

Tonight is the new episode. Is anyone else having trouble remembering which night the show is on? It seems to me like it used to always be on Tuesdays, but I'm not 100% sure. One thing that I'm sure of is that I still wish they would play the show during the summer like they used to.

If you ever forget to watch an episode, you can catch it on hulu. They have last week's episode up-

Or if you get Fox Reality Channel on your cable/satellite system, they re-air the episodes a few days after they originally air.

Boy that was crap. Quitting in the very last possible minute was obviously staged. Along with the standing ovation. What was that? Like she was a fuckin war hero or something. It was a sprained ankle!

Yelling at the cooking teacher is always a riot.

And that situation with Robert during the prize seemed like a dick move.

I agree about Robert. I thought it was very Kitchen Nightmare-esque where he actually shows that he cares about people, only to have him fuck with him.

The dude that knows everything about Ramsay is creepy too.

I mean, I guess you gotta expect it when you write a biography and put everything about there about you and become a public figure.

Re: Hell's Kitchen -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- Premieres 1/29/09

That was a really good episode. I loved how they made Robert ride the ferry, get off, then just go back on.

Gordon ripping in to Nebraska was hilarious. And I hate Lacey even more. Like wow, I was yelling at the TV again. She is so fucking annoying.

Surprised to have seen that girl with the sprained ankle leave. Wasn't expecting that a t all.

Unfortunately, Lacey is the new Jenn so I'm sure she'll go through phases and last it out until the end.

I could watch him yell at her for the full hour and be perfectly entertained. "You're robbing people!!!"
I loved it when she kept burning the fish.

Re: Hell's Kitchen -- Season 5 Discussion Thread -- Premieres 1/29/09

Loved this episode.

Best part was Gordon ripping Colleen to shreads and saying how she's ripping people off. Ji should have toughed it out. I know she's a girl, but from the look of it, it looked like a minor ankle sprain at best. I know mobility is important when working in a kitchen, but it's not like she's playing basketball.

Lacey is such a fucking lazy ass bitch. How could anyone even think that she has magically turned things around after sleeping an extra 6 hours while her teammates were busy prepping.
