I agree...Look at the DS crowd.

The only difference is you have a MP3 and Video player that could keep you busy if the games aren't your thing.

The PSP does have a large variety of games that can feed anyones tastes.

The system itself looks great, but there's not a single game on IGN's release list that interests me. Ape Escape comes close, but it's just a remake and there's no second analog stick, which is key for controlling that game. Add in the price of the system and the games, and there's just no way I can justify buying one right now. I'll probably pick one up if they eventually sell the system by itself for $150, and if game prices drop (to $30 rather than $40), especially since there should be a much better selection of games next year. I did the same thing with the PS2 - bought it a year or so later and saved a bit of cash. But I do envy those of you who'll be picking one of these up next week - it looks like a fun machine.

Get Me Coffee - FYI, I'm quite happy with my DS. I'm sure there are some people who regret buying one, but there are also plenty of people like me who are very satisfied with their purchase.

That's true. I saw two or three used DS systems at EB when I stopped by on Tuesday to pick up the new Yoshi game. But your original comment ("I agree...Look at the DS crowd") came off as a dig against the DS, and seemed a little rude. I think we can agree that the DS and PSP are aimed at somewhat different groups of gamers, and each system has its strengths and weaknesses.

Anyway, I don't want to take us too far off track. I'm looking forward to reading everyone's impressions next week, since I probably will buy the system down the line.

My best friend and I pre bought ours last night at my local Sam Goody. I live in a small city, so I was surprised that I found anyone that offered a pre buy. The prebuy was for the unit alone (which i was SO HAPPY about, the thought of a bundle really turned me off) for 249.99. They required a $50.00 deposit. They are only getting 10 units in at launch, and to my surprise my friend and I were numbers 4 and 5 on the list, and the clerk acted surprised that my friend and I were so willing to quickly plunk down the $50.00 for the deposit!!

As far as games (although the 49.99 price for a portable game REALLY bothers me) I am interested in getting NFL STREET, (I have and love nfl street 2 for the xbox) METAL GEAR, LUMINES, NFS UNDERGROUND, WIPEOUT, TWISTED METAL, TIGER WOODS and UNTOLD LEGENDS. Also, I am very interested in some movies. I personally think the movie idea is great, I know there are alot of people who think otherwise of this idea Keep in mind I am not going to go nuts the first day, these ideas I have will be purchased over a period of time. Although for LAUNCH, probally its going to be NFL STREET, TIGER WOODS, some sort of carrying case and maybe a flick depending on which ones are availible at launch

I gave in.

Well a while back I asked opinions on whether to get an Import PSP or wait, everyone told me to wait. I have been reading all the forms at GA and here and I thought that this was gonna sell out FAST. I was in the second oder of EB shipments at an EB run by Soccer Moms...they seemed vauge about every questions I asked. I felt...uncertain I would get one w/o a hassle. So anyway I was persusing Craig's List last night (where I got my DS) and I came across and import PSP vaule pack w/ screen protector with DarkStalkers (JP) and Ridge Racer (JP). For $325. I met the guy and did the deal. He drove up in a Benz and was like I got the stuff everyone wants...the PSP.. LOL! So he turned it on ( at nighttime it was so VIVID) and it was MOUTH DROPPING. The screen is beautiful. I am in love. This is indeed a work of art. Set up my WI-Fi thru my verizon DSL...went to the EB games today and canceled my pre-order.

I'm in heaven.

Since you have a PSP and a DS can you give us a honest comparison?

Just to let you know, NO store is selling JUST the PSP itself. It comes with the 32MB, Spiderman, etc. Or, do you mean a bundle WITH games?

I assume that because he quoted the price as 250 and he was ok with that, he means it wasn't bundled with anything extra...

costco preorders are gone, by the way. So nobody has friends that are going to camp out or anything? I know it's not holiday season, but I wonder how big this is going to be... or if it's all just hype.

I think I'm more worried about not getting a copy of Ridge Racer now...

I can. The PSP is a very sexy piece of tech. A work of art. I love the DS too but in a different way. The scratch screen makes the DS the experience more intimate/ interactive. The list of games the use the Touch screen are growing fast, and I will get Pac-Pix etc. The PSP is like have a PS2 contoller in your hand while in the middle lies a perfect image of something...it seriously looks like a mini HDTV. The DS has that media player thing coming out, but PSP has that built in. I look forward to MAME emulation and hacks on my PSP. I have had every handlheld (and console) save for the Lynx, and I can say PSP owns them all. Even the most hardened Nintendo fan, (adult, not teen system bashers) simply cannot deny PSP is the greatest handheld ever made and is quite possibly the most beautiful piece of tech ever made and that includes the iPod. I am 35 years old, and too old to care about these system wars. I love games. If you love games, you owe it to yourself to get a PSP. To me, it is has potential to be the greatest system ever made.

I've never been more excited about a portable gaming system since I laid down $300 and bought a Turbo Express system back in the Summer of 1991. To think it took 14 years for another system to come along and attract my interest. I can't wait to pick up mine!!

I'm on the fence about getting a PSP. I have 1 question though. Ive tried to find an answer here, but after Reading 17 pages, I'm just looking at the pretty pics

Anyway, has it been confirmed that the PSP will have a web browser? Also since its wireless, I assume you would have to be in a wireless hot spot. Web browser and ability to check my email, would possibly put me over.

Why did Sony opt to leave an inch square hole on the back of the UMD disks? Mini-discs at least have a metal slide shield to protect the discs from dirt/dust. I was looking at some launch titles and they all are already scratched and that's coming from a newly opened package. Dust and dirt could be seen all the way into the casing. Yeah, that's smart.

I heard there will be a software upgrade so you can use a web browser and check emails.

Dude, CD's and DVD's have no cover and they work fine. Any protection is better than none at all. Minor scratches will not be a problem.

Wonder if they'll have any at the stores.. for those who didnt' preorder.. I'm not a sony fan, but this thing looks sweet. Then again if games are 50, not sure I can justify the price for the amount of time I'll use it.

That thing looks very cool though, and there is always something said for that.

PSP v GBA2 not DS

What I find interesting is that Sony is pricing these games at the same price of their PS2 games. Nintendo is basically price gouging now with the DS games. I went into Gamestop and Yoshi Touch and Go was $34.99. That is ridiculous, no new DS game should retail for more than $25.00. As I was playing Ridge Racer PSP I was thinking how much fun this would be on a console. The game has the polish (save for some PS 1.5-ish type graphics) of a full fledged game. It cannot be that expensive to make these games for DS. The rom-card is not expensive to write to. Most of DS development looks like it can be done by B Development teams in their spare time. Having said that, there will be a lot of pushing the envelope DS games like Metoeos and Nintendogs etc.

My main ‘beef’ with Nintendo is that the wireless functionality has yet to be turned on.
The gaming press was tripping over itself proclaiming the ability to play people wirelessly over the internet. I went through some of my magazines from this past winter and all of them basically said that. This was false. When I got my DS, I was the only one I knew with it. I wanted to play over my wireless connection on the internet. PictoChat is useless to me…my rooms are always empty!  While it was announced LAST WEEK that wireless play over the internet, I think Sony’s move to have wireless out of box trumps that.

I want to comment on something here. There needs to be a standard label for Wi-Fi enabled play on the back of the game boxes. The ad-hoc and infrastructure labels are too broad confusing. Sometimes it means that I can play people within my 30 ft radius, sometimes I can just download content (WipeOut Pure), sometimes I can play with people around the country (Twisted Metal). I think there should be specifics as to what Wi-Fi access you have. I want to know this before I purchase a game. For instance, I would not buy Twisted Metal for PSP if it had no online play. I have played TM1 and 2 to death…8 years ago. Online makes the difference. If it said online enabled and then I got home and found out that I can just unlock new content, I would be angry.

AFAIK, there will be a mini-web browser, as one was leaked a few months ago with a mini-applications suite. This bodes well. Additionally, the amount of apps being cooked up for the PSP is starting to grow. One criticism I would have about the PSP and it’s a minor one, is that the UMD format for movies is pretty silly and I don’t see it going places. Maybe I am wrong on this one, but I don’t think so.

I predict that DS, Nintendo’s cute little system, will have a price drop very soon, to $99.00 US, probably announced at E3. It’s already on sale for that price on Play-asian.com. Nintendo is probably going to announce the GBA2 with PSP-like media capabilities. I don’t think the market can saturated with all these handhelds. It’s too confusing for the average gamer. I think certainly Nintendo will phase out the GBA SP. We are going to look back at DS in a few years and see it’s positioning now as Vs. the PSP as silly. I think the real ‘battle’ lies in the GBA2 v. the PSP. Either way, E3 will be one of the more interesting events of the past several years, that is for certain.

Sold my Nintendo DS on ebay the other day because I played my next door neighbor's Japanese PSP and it is outstanding!
I love it. I find myself going next door just to play it. It truly is the best handheld I've ever played. March 24th can't come quick enough

I think the UMD movies will do fine on the PSP. The low res video and audio GBA videos with only 45 minutes of video per cartridge sell very well at the same price point as the UMD videos. There is also a whole market based around portable video players with the likes of Videonow and the Juicebox.
