Maybe even less. With the PS2 and a few other console launches, the launch was during the Christmas season. There aren't going to be many parents looking for PSPs for gifts at this time of year, except for a few for birthdays.

You can easily lower the quality (the one under 384 is also perfectly watchable) or change the frames per second, as well as the audio quality.. Apparently people have gotten 25 minute TV Episodes (Like family guy) to just 20-25MB at a watchable quality (Now I dont know if that means the 32kbps mono sound or what, but they said it was easily possible and didnt experience problems with the video).

One neat thing I just found out myself, is the PSP says "Digital Photos" under the photos menu.. thing is, there is no "Digital Photos" director on the PSP when you plug it in. I got the idea to plug the PSP Memory stick into my camera, took some pictures, then plugged it back into the PSP and sure enough, they do appear under "Digital Photos" if you do that. Its a nice thing for people with a sony camera .
Nice feature with the digital pics, can't wait to snap some with my T1. BTW, does the PSP come with the movie conversion software, or is it a seperate download or purchase?

I ended up cancelling my pre-order. I considered holding on to it and selling it on ebay or craigslist, but decided I'd just cancel it and let some other lucky chump buy it from a legit store. Plus hoarders just piss me off. Anyway, enjoy the new system. $480 for a handheld system was too much for my pocketbook right now. Maybe once places stop offering bundles and/or prices come down. Looking forward to y'alls impression and pics of the system!

9 Presentation
The story is retold and reconfigured enough for folks who haven't seen the movie (if there are any) to get what's going on, and the new material blends in since the cast is back to bring it to life.

8.5 Graphics
Just like the DS game a few months back, this is a good showcase for the new system. Spidey himself looks amazing, and the stages (especially in the cities) flash great effects.

9 Sound
Great use of the Spider-Man score, and the sound effects pound away in the PSP earbuds.

7.5 Gameplay
It's a throwback to the original Spider-Man 3D platformers, but the fighting controls and web slinging still pack a punch.

3.0 Lasting Appeal
It's hurting for more gameplay to get into, and even the hidden secrets are hardly enough to sustain a second or third play-through.
7.0 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

What killed it was the Lasting Appeal! Everything else was fine....plus I enjoyed the gameplay from Spidey1 alot better than spidey2....the freeroaming wasn't that great, rather boring. I'm a huge spidey fan so I had to go with this....but I guess the best move would be to wait for it to hit the bargin bins.

I'll wait 'til it hits $20...charging $50 for a game that lasts less than 10 hours is nuts.

If you wanna see how it works, you can download the free program at:
http://www.nurs.or.jp/%7Ecalcium/3gp...nverter025.zip

Run the setup thing (It will start in japanese, so if you want it in english, click the little english bubble), double click "Customized Mp4 for PSP", and then you can use the default settings, or change them from a pulldown menu, whenever you're done, drag and drop a movie on top of the program and it will convert it. You can use it if you wanna see how good it works, the sizes, etc..
The first link I posted explains it all step by step

SONY has its own program called "Image Converter 2" which is 1000 yen (under $10) and is more straightforward. Plug the PSP in, it will show up under the image converter 2 menu, then just drag and drop videos onto it, it will convert it and put it onto the PSP for you -- but if you want a free one, the one above (3gp) does the same thing.

I paid for the SONY one and prefer it a lot for its simplicity
Thanks for the writeup on this sofdec. I'm going to keep this in case I need it, but I think the program I use for my PDA (AutoGK) will do the trick just fine . Plus there's no learning curve since I've been using it for a while now.

Look like KBToys is taking preorders for PSP units with one game. Not as bad as some of the other places asking you to reserve 2-4 games along with the unit.

I think Kaybee's allocation is suspect, though, since they've been allowing preorders for a while. Doesn't hurt to try, but they do mention that they though they expect to be able to fulfill all orders, they can't guarantee it.

Costco bundle up:
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...th=2805*20956*
319.99, less than 10 to ship. Comes with Twisted Metal and NBA (the sony one). Since the games retail for 40, you save around 10 bucks, which you then use for shipping, if you
a) already are a costco member and
b) wanted those games already

I've heard bad things about TM, but NBA is supposed to be pretty nice, if a little awkward because of the whole shooting configuration. It is 989 sports, though.

Speaking of which... I know that games are trickling out now, but what are the recommendations so far? I want to preorder some games at gamerush with my credit (and the trade in two used games, get a new game for 35). Because of the deals, I'm looking for games that will retail for 50 (I guess all EA games), and I'm looking at NFL Street, which I've never played on the console. Any suggestions?

I've already heard Lumines is really, really good, and Ridge Racer seems like a sure bet too.

You may try preordering at FYE/SaturdayMatinee and their other affiliates. It's 299.99 for the system and 1 game. The store I went to only had four other preorders.

Also, has anyone else been taking advantage of the 3-for-1 deal at ebgames?
You can trade 3 xbox, ps2 or gamecube games and choose from Wipeout, Twisted Metal,Ape Escape, ATV and the sony-made sports titles. There is a huge exclusion list but one title that does work towards it is the Outlaw Golf 9 Holes of Xmas which is $3 at Blockbuster. Here is that exclusion list:http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/ads/shops...exclusions.asp

I traded in 9 crap games and pre-purchased Ape Escape, Twisted Metal, and Wipeout. Also trade in some junk DVDs and picked up Tony Hawn for PSP. Case looks awesome!

For those that pre-ordered at Gamestop:

GameStop Corp. Celebrates Release of Sony's First Portable Handheld Gaming System; Midnight Openings Planned Nationwide to Commemorate Industry Event

GRAPEVINE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 2005--GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME)(NYSE:GME.B), the nation's largest video game and entertainment software specialty retailer, today announced that many of its stores across its entire 1,800-plus chain will celebrate with midnight openings on March 24th, officially launching the highly-anticipated release of Sony Computer Entertainment of America's PSP (PlayStation Portable) video game system.

The PSP Value Pack, being offered for $250, includes the revolutionary PSP hardware, stereo headphones, a 32-MB memory stick duo, battery pack, a soft carrying case, and a cleaning cloth. Also included are two of Sony's proprietary 1.8-gigabyte Universal Media Discs, one of which is a sampler of music, movies and video games, and the other being the movie "Spiderman 2."

"The PSP, along with all accessories and hot titles available at launch, will be available for purchase during these midnight openings; and GameStop anticipates that pre-order customers and gaming enthusiasts alike will be in attendance, as past experience from midnight launches of systems and hot titles has repeatedly proven successful," said Jack Beuttell, Senior Vice President Marketing and Merchandising. "Most of the stores participating in these openings will feature gaming tournaments, promotional giveaways and have an all-out party atmosphere where avid video gamers can enjoy themselves while waiting to purchase this system, unparalleled in features because of its portability, 16:9 aspect ratio and color screen resolution of 480 by 272 pixels.

I wonder if there will be people standing in line very early in the morning outside of BB and the like for this thing... anyone have any friends that are going to do so? I think I remember the PS2 being that way...

thank god the midnight thing at gamestop was manager/district choice...because we are not doing it in San Diego. Opening at midnight for a handful of people would blow. We are, however, opening early Thursday morning...at 8 I believe.

Playing the PSP now (just got done checking out a few scenes from the included SpiderMan 2 disc as well) Gotta say - this thing is SWEET! Picture is super crisp and bright, co-workers say it looks HD to them. I thought the screen sounded too small but its not bad at all. Snaped in some good headphones too, never did care for those in ear phones.

Playing Twisted Metal Head-On. Only REAL complaint so far is the glare. Screen is really shiny, like a mirror until the game is loaded.

Hmmm, I'm still undecided about this. I want it becuase it's NEW and shiny and very promising, but the price is holding me back on a hANDHELD system. Plus, games being $50 is a disappointment too.

I also haven't had a handheld since Atari Lynx, so I don't really know if I would use it much.

Where did you get your's at? Also, Spiderman 2 looks like its 'HD' because the screen is rather small. If it was a much larger screen, you would see more pixilation.

Buddy of mine has an advance demo unit. Yeah, I'm sure on a bigger screen it wouldnt look as slick, but it is sweet. Screen is REAL sensitive to fingerprints as well. Just played World Tour Soccer, graphics were real nice and fluid. factory speaker sucks of course, headphones really pull you into it

I'm in the same boat! This is my first handheld since Lynx. I played my brothers GBA from time to time....but never bought one.

I'm pretty darn excited!!

I'd pass if I were you. Impulse buys usually end up being regretted. And prices will drop in the next 6 months to a year. At the least you'll see a non-bundled version.

The real questions to ask yourself are:

1. Do I have a desire to game on the go?

and if the answer to that is no:

2. Would I play a portable system at home instead of playing my PS2, GC and/or X-box?

If you answer yes to either, then pick one up. If no to both, don't waste your money.
