MOD NOTE:

What part of "No silly behavior allowed" in the thread title do you guys not get?

Get Me Coffee: jediwicz has a legitimate complaint about the hole in the back of the UMD. That's not Sony bashing. What, do you expect every comment to be positive??? It's no more Sony bashing than your "But alot of peeps bought [the DS] because it the the hot item at the time and then they regret it" comment is Nintendo bashing.

PixyJunket: By posting something like that, you're being no better. Next time, please use the button to report the post.

I'd really hate to see this thread shut down. PSP is really a hot item right now, and I'd like to hear more reviews, both positive and negative.

That is a good point. I hadn't thought of it in that light. The GBA Video is a cash cow (for Majesco, is it?). Certainly there is a market for them. And the PSP UMD movie marketing might go after their parents. I can see potential there for Sony.

For those interested in the PSP ad campaign, commercials will begin to air March 21st.

FOSTER CITY, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today an innovative marketing campaign to launch the PSP(TM) (PlayStation(R) Portable) handheld entertainment system, which makes its highly anticipated North American debut on March 24. The groundbreaking campaign demonstrates PSP as the first truly integrated portable entertainment product designed to provide a comprehensive entertainment experience -- games, movies, music, photos and wireless connectivity -- in one stylish device. The multi-million dollar integrated marketing effort includes television, print, outdoor and online elements, and non-traditional, original programs including PSP Radio and the first-ever PSP Accessories Show.

The various executions of the campaign are designed to engage consumers by showcasing the incredible entertainment innovation that PSP represents, while also focusing on the human aspect of personal entertainment. The overall tone of the campaign is hip and urban, inviting consumers to break free from the constraints of the "handheld gaming ghetto."

"PSP is the first product to deliver on the portable entertainment promise that today's consumers seek, a true blending of technology, fashion and fun," said Andrew House, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Through the PSP marketing campaign, we are taking portable entertainment to the mainstream, expanding audiences with sophisticated games and a wealth of other options for the mobile lifestyle."

To demonstrate the new entertainment freedoms that consumers will experience with PSP, the company partnered with agency of record TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles to create two television spots, "POV" and "Blender," scheduled to air on network, syndication and cable TV starting on March 21. "POV" opens in the factory with the "birth" of a PSP. In an explosion into light, the commercial's protagonist is PSP and the spot opens with a shot from the unit's vantage point, as it is unwrapped for the first time and looks into the faces of excited consumers who have waited for this moment. The focus then shifts to the consumer and the portability is seen through the eyes of the player as they engage in their daily activities such as grocery shopping, getting a hair-cut, all while experiencing portable entertainment on PSP. "POV" was directed by Dave Meyers, who has overseen music videos for such artists as Britney Spears, No Doubt, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z and many more.

The second commercial spot, "Blender," blends live action with characters with movies, music and games to merge all entertainment mediums -- a visual metaphor for the broad potential of PSP. The ad opens with a hip young consumer walking down the street with a PSP in-hand, when suddenly he begins to morph into characters from his favorite games, movies and music. He becomes "Needles Kane" from the popular Twisted Metal(TM) franchise, a movie cowboy, a hockey player, an NBA star, a musician, all representative of the new ways consumers will be able to experience the immersive portable entertainment with PSP.

The television campaign spots are tied together by music, a key tenet of PSP, as both spots feature "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand, the award-winning band, courtesy of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, creating a unifying theme and PSP launch anthem. These ads will run on a mixture of primetime, late night, syndication and cable television from March 21 through April 17.

Lets keep the news coming....

Ubisoft Announces Kickin' Line-Up
Splinter Cell 4, Ghost Recon 3, Prince 3, and a Lockdown delay: look now!
by David Adams
March 17, 2005 - In one massive wallop, Ubisoft today announced its line-up for its new fiscal year, which begins in April. Among the hot title announcements are Splinter Cell 4, Ghost Recon 3, Prince of Persia 3, and tentatively-titled Killing Day, a first-person shooter for next-generation consoles.

Most immediately, Ubisoft will delay Rainbow Six Lockdown to the first half of its new fiscal year (i.e., after March), as the company is already seeing strong orders for titles shipping by the end of the month (think Splinter Cell Chaos Theory). Ubisoft hopes Lockdown will jump-start the new fiscal year, as the company expects the title to sell 1.5 to 2 million units during the first half of fiscal 2005-2006.

During the same period, Ubisoft will ship Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Far Cry Instincts, and a new urban street-racing title, 187 Ride or Die, all of which are major titles for the company.

Moving into the holiday season, Ubisoft steps into overdrive, releasing new titles in most of its key franchises, including a new Brothers in Arms chapter, Ghost Recon 3, Prince of Persia 3, and the game tie-in to Peter Jackson's King Kong film. Both Ghost Recon 3 and King Kong will hit "next-generation consoles," which given a holiday release, almost certainly means the next Xbox system.

Though the post-holiday period is usually quiet, Ubisoft will offer Splinter Cell 4 for current and next-gen consoles, two new Might & Magic titles for PC, as well as Killing Day, an FPS designed specifically for the next generation of hardware, and with which the company "plans to demonstrate once again its technological lead and highlight the capabilities of the new consoles."

All told, during its fiscal 2005-2006 Ubisoft will launch 32 titles, including three for the DS, five for the PSP, and four for the new Xbox system (though we suspect this won't be the only next-gen system in play). The company is aiming for a 12 percent increase in sales and an operating income of more than €55 million for the new fiscal year.

What we've summarized so far are just the big highlights. Here's the full list from the company, with standard (non-fiscal) calendar dates:

Q1 (April - June 2005)
- Lumines (PSP)
- Bomberman DS (Nintendo DS)
- Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Nintendo DS, GBA)
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Lockdown (Xbox, PS2, Cube, PC)

Q2 (July - September 2005)
- Lunar Genesis (Nintendo DS)
- AA Rise of a Soldier (Xbox, PS2)
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 mission pack (Xbox)
- Far Cry Instincts (current-gen consoles)
- World War II Squadron (working title) (Xbox)
- The Settlers Heritage of Kings add-on (PC)
- Prince of Persia Warrior Within (PSP)
- 187 Ride or Die (Xbox, PS2, Cube, PC)
- Myst V: End of Ages (PC)

Q3 (October - December 2005)
- Alexandra Ledermann 6 (PC)
- AND 1 (Xbox, PS2)
- New Brothers In Arms title (Xbox, PS2, PC)
- Far Cry add-on (PC)
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 3 (Xbox, PS2, Cube, PC, next-gen consoles)
- Peter Jackson's King Kong (Xbox, PS2, Cube, PC, Nintendo DS, PSP, next-gen consoles)
- Prince of Persia 3 (Xbox, PS2, Cube, PC, Nintendo DS, GBA)
- The Settlers mission pack (PC)

Q4 (January - March 2006)
- Silent Hunter 4 (PC)
- Heroes of Might & Magic 5 (PC)
- Splinter Cell 4 (Xbox, PS2, Cube, PC, PSP, next-gen consoles)
- Product with Might & Magic brand (PC)
- To-be-confirmed title (Xbox, PS2)
- Killing Day (working title) (next-gen consoles)

Be sure to check back for more on all of these titles as soon as details come in.

Actually, Yoshi is selling for $29.99 at every other store I went to this week (Best Buy, Target, Game Crazy, Game Rush, Target etc). The only Nintendo made game selling above $29.99 is WarioWare for $34.99, which is fair.

Most of DS development looks like it can be done by B Development teams in their spare time. Having said that, there will be a lot of pushing the envelope DS games like Metoeos and Nintendogs etc.
I really don't think making a game using a touch screen device is 'easy'.

My main ‘beef’ with Nintendo is that the wireless functionality has yet to be turned on.
Soon enough the DS will be. I'd rather wait a while and get great games that use the Wireless ability that some junk that barley taps into its power.

For instance, I would not buy Twisted Metal for PSP if it had no online play.
I agree with you on that. Games with online are somewhat of a selling point to me, except for sports games. So really, the only game to play online right away with PSP is Twisted Metal (ince ATV got delayed)

I predict that DS, Nintendo’s cute little system, will have a price drop very soon, to $99.00 US, probably announced at E3. It’s already on sale for that price on Play-asian.com.
I doubt Nintendo is going to drop its brand new system 33% of its selling price. The most it will drop is $129, and I don't think that will happen until Sony starts selling the PSP by itself, and not in a 'value pack'

So, anyone here have any PSP games yet? I picked up Tony Hawk a couple of days ago, and plan on picking up Ape Escape, Wipeout, NBA, and Twisted Metal later today when they arrive.

I disagree that is fair. The budget for these games are very low. Development tools are cheap for the DS. It is usuing Nintendo 64 technology. I think it's great for Nintendo and its shareholders. But the DS falls in line with their glacial pricing pace. I point to the cash cow NES Classic series for the GameBoy. Those should have been 9.99 each at most. They could have put them all on ONE CART. Yet they retailed for $19.99 each. At very least with my Ridge Racer PSP I got every track from almost every RR game. That's fair value for the price.

I disagree. The Palm OS has thousands (hundreds) of games for it. Home brew and commercial. Same concept.

It should have been on since day one. I think they realized hteir mistake.

Strange thing is I really am leaning towards a PSP, but really don't know what games if any I would buy for it. I kind of want to get one to play with the movie and music playback features.

I definitely won't spend $50 for a PSP game unless it is a guaranteed AAA title.

As far as the hole in the UMD case. Yes, I would have also liked it if they had designed it like the minidisc. The problem with dust inside a UMD is there is no way to easily clean it or get it out. With a CD or DVD you can clean it if it gets dirty. This may not turn into a problem most of the time, but I can see the discs getting scratched if junk gets inside the UMD case.

I already have software to encode the MPEG4 video, but has anyone confirmed if the PSP comes with its own software in the US?

Ugh, just looked at Memory Stick Duo prices and my interest in a PSP has again fallen off. $130 is the cheapest I could find for a 1GB duo stick. I only paid $50 a few months ago for a 1GB SD card.

I'm going to shelf my PSP interest until a few must have games come out and hopefully some of the game prices will drop after they have been on the market awhile.

I'm planning on getting 1GB memory stick maybe by this summer....I'll be saving my Amazon GC & maybe the price will go further down. They have a 2GB coming soon too. But you're right, that damn memory stick is way too expensive!

Gamers Go Under the Counter for New Sony Gadget
By Adam Pasick

LONDON (Reuters) - Gadget lust is in full bloom at the electronic retailers on London's Tottenham Court Road, where "gray market" Japanese imports of Sony's new PlayStation Portable bring in more than three times the official price.

Don't Be Duped
The top 5 online scams, how to stay clear of nasty phishing hooks, and a web safety cheat sheet.

"We sell plenty of these -- usually 10 or 20 a weekend," said a salesman at MBA Technologies, a shop in London's consumer electronics retail district, as he reached under the counter for one of the sleek portable gaming devices that the store is selling for 300 pounds ($577).

Sony has been churning out millions of PSPs -- a multimedia device that the company hopes will be a breakthrough hit on par with Apple's iPod -- but has been unable to keep up with demand. In addition to games, the PSP plays movies and digital music files and also displays photos.

Earlier this week it was forced to push back its European launch date by several months to ensure there are enough units for the U.S. launch next week.

The staggered global release of the PSP has created a thriving underground market for the devices.

Retailers like MBA, who receive their PSPs from Asian wholesalers, are not condoned by Sony but are not illegal either. Nevertheless, the shop sells its PSPs from under the counter, available only if customers request them. The paperback book-sized device is encased in a Sony box covered in Japanese text.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the division responsible for PlayStations in the region, declined to comment.

The PSP went on sale in Japan in December, retailing for 19,800 yen ($190.20), and supply is still tight. On opening day, gamers were limited to buying one PSP each and recruited homeless people to stand in queues, according to press reports. Only one store only displays a PSP on Tottenham Court Road in central London, where there are dozens of electronics stores scattered amid shops selling designer stationary and chic folding chairs. The second-hand retailer Electronics Exchange said it has sold about a dozen in the last two weeks at 300 pounds each.

When the PSP first came out in Japan, importers scrambled to get their hands on units which they resold in the United States for $500 or more -- prices dedicated gamers were all too happy to pay.

But as the U.S. launch approached prices fell dramatically, a trend that will probably take place in Europe as well.

According to a page on Amazon.co.uk, the device is due to be released in Britain on June 24 with a price of 179.99 pounds. Sony has said it will sell the devices in America for $249 as part of a value pack that includes a copy of the movie "Spiderman 2."

"The market perceives, and probably rightfully, that there is going to be product available," said Mark Argento, a games analyst at ThinkEquity Partners.

One U.S. importer, National Console Support, started the PSP Value Pack at more than $510 but has dropped it twice to $380.

(Additional reporting by Ben Berkowitz in Los Angeles)

First of all, people paid homeless people in Japan to stand in lines to get a PSP at launch? Never heard that before. Secondly, the picture in that article looks like a digital camera, not the PSP. Thirdly 577 bucks! Geez.

Since dvdtalk changed thier forums to this newer style, I have not figured out how to properly "quote" someone, so please bare with me. (go ahead, call me a moron, I deserve it)

This post is in response to post #408 made by GizmoDVD.

I am sorry I was not clear enough in my post, when I said Sam goody was offering the system only, I realize I will also be getting spidey 2 movie, sampler disc, wired remote, ear phones, ect ect, and when i said it was NOT a bundle, I meant that they did not FORCE me to to buy games with it like eb and gamestop. Sorry for the misunderstanding Gizmo....

On to another related topic:

A few posts above mine, someone started to inquire about mem cards (san disk) I found some at ECOST.COM for what I think is a decent price. The only thing I dont know is (and yes you can call me a moron again) which one is compatible with the psp. One is long and rectangular and the other is shorter and a little more like a square than a rectangle. Anyhoo, depending on which style is is, the 512 will either be 61.99 or 59.99 with free shipping over 25.00. and the gig stick will either be 126.77 or 102.99 depending again on which one of the 2 I am looking at is actually compatible.... Here is a link from a search for "sandisk" http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecsplash/...=1&incimage=on

Enjoy.....

I don't think GBA video is any indication of how well UMD movies will do on the PSP. GBA video is the likes of Nickelodeon shows targeted at a very specific younger audience. I think, at least at first, the PSP will have an older market and that is untested for movies on videogame systems. So, it may do well, but honestly who knows at this point?

Well, I couldnt resist and popped open a box at work today. System still feels/looks as badass as ever. Played some Need For Speed Rivals...played fairly well if you like those games. Control was hard at first, gotta get used to that tiny analog nub. My only complaint was with the Spiderman 2 UMD. With no chapter selection that I could find, it took me over 5 minutes to 'skip' to the train scene. If other movies do not include chapter selection, I will certainly pass on the movies. It takes way to long 'about 5 seconds' to skip each chapter, which is quite tedious. All In All, the thing rules and I cant wait to actually buy mine thursday morning.
