thanks for the replies. it kinda sucks that they don't tell you that on the package but I only paid 47.xx for it out of my pocket since I PMed the Best Buy ad and had a small return to CC so its not too bad. no biggie. now its time to fill it up.

Best quality at a small file size will be Atrac3. The PSP is Sonic Stage compatible, so I would suggest using the new version 3 of that as your music jukebox and convert your CDs to Atrac3. Sonic Stage is free at www.connect.com and you don't have to buy any of the Sony music downloads to use it, but they do give away free songs from time to time.

I thought I read somewhere the Atrac3 format was only playable from a UMD. I don't have any in that format so I couldn't tell you. If I find that information again I'll post it, unless someone used Atrac3 on a memory stick on the psp, thus proving this incorrect.

Atrac3 predates UMD. I'm pretty sure it will work from a memory stick. It was the only option with Sony portable music players before they caved and started supporting mp3 too.

Ok, I found out what I half-remembered. I read that ATRAC3 can be put on PSP Memory Sticks, but only if they are non-Pro.

picked one up earlier this week. overall i am quite impressed. i just finished copying clone wars eps. 21 - 25 to a 512M memory stick and the picture is quite good (tivo -> graphedit stripping -> psp video 9 -> psp).

psp video 9 is a very well put together, nice, and free piece of software.

the process is pretty well explained in this link:

http://www.evillabs.net/tivo/

you will need to register dump.ax after transferring it to your windows/system32 directory and running "regsvr32 dump.ax" from the run command. when the author of the above page says "dig around for .." look in the directshow filter tree.

I just got my psp and see about 2 dead pixels. They remain white. Should I try to get another one, or will I have the same problem with the new one? Is it worth trying?

I bought that pelican one that they had at best buy. While it does a good job at reducing glare, the remaining image quality is not good. I took mine off and will wait for a better one to come out.

The Martin Fields screen protector is awesome (but doesn't reduce glare & image quality). Search this thread for my previous post for a link to the website.

I have the Pelican screen protector, but I haven't opened it and plan to take it back.

I have ordered the 'Brando' but it will take a while to get here (10+ days according to the web site). I'll post my thoughts on it when it arrives and I get it applied.

I've only tried putting a couple of songs on the included 32mb stick, but it worked fine. The files were in the regular Atrac3 and in Atrac3plus. Both worked perfectly. As soon as you connect your PSP in USB mode Sonic Stage will show a usable player to copy music to. Granted I don't know if all Duo sticks work, but the included one worked fine.

how big is the file? psp video 9 has many options from which to choose. play around with the settings. when i encoded clone wars eps 21-25, i set psp video 9 to do the transfer as a 90 min movie ( 1.5 - 2 hours in settings for movie) and it turned out quite well. i think it was ~29fps with variable bit rate for video and 96 (?) kbs for the audio.

for an essentially free program, this is quite a good tool.

I've been converting my songs into the attrac3plus format using SonicStage at 48kbs and works great. I've managed to put around 20 songs into the 32megs easily.

I'm using IMTOO to convert my WMV music videos and the sound is off with the video... any idea how to fix this? The WMV video is perfectly synced.

For those interested in using PSP Video9 or for the current users, here are some detailed guides that might help:

DVD to PSP Guide

Video File to PSP Guide

Support Thread

Also, for the current users, there is an updated version of PSP Video 9 available:

Version 1.24
Added: FFMPEG License info
Bug Fix: Copy thumbnails during Auto Copy
Bug Fix: Latent View Movie on PC button
Feature Request: Outputted file now named *.MP4

And for those interested, especially fans of the SinCity movie/graphic novels, here is a PSP ready video:

http://rapidshare.de/files/1085424/M4V00005.MP4.html

It's a rapidshare file, so there are some procedures you'll have to follow if you're not familiar with it.

1) Click on the above link.
2) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click FREE.
3) Scroll to the bottom again and watch the timer.
4) Download when it says to.

It's PSP ready so just copy/paste the file into the video folder. Credit goes to taosd for the video.

Is there a reason I can't view JPEGS just emailed to me, then transfered to the photo folder on the PSP? I have a couple that were already on my hard drive.

Sony has a built in porn blocker. There should be a hack in a couple of weeks.
