I realized that we have a memory card reader that my sister bought for the digital camera, so I'm using that to transfer files to my Memory Stick DUO. However, I can't seem to figure out how to transfer Atrac3 songs over. I've downloaded Sonic Stage and imported a CD to the computer, but after that I'm not sure what to do. I was able to get mp3s to work fine, but I assume with the Atrac3 (I have .oma files) its not as simple as moving the files over to the PSP/MUSIC folder on my memory stick, since that didn't work. Can anyone help me with this?

First allow me to mention how much I love my PSP, no regrets
What are the options for memory cards, besides Sony Duo's? I'm definitely wanting to get a 1 GB. I remember reading somewhere there are alternatives, or different brand names, but cant recall what. And 43 pages is a lot to wade through, so thanks in advance.

It's def. a wide spread problem, Thankfully Sony has backed down from there earlier stance of trying to make consumers accept the so called "common defect". IF you get a PSP with bad pixels and decide it bothers you enough Sony will replace your screen. They did not state if its just the screen or if they replace or the entire system.
Sony will now warranty PSP units suffering from dead pixels. Sony still insists that dead pixels are a common problem in all LCD displays, saying "A very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels is normal for LCD screens, and is not a sign of a malfunction," and asks that PSP owners use theirs for at least a week or two, to see if it still bothers them. User who encounter, "persistent and aggravating dead pixels," are instructed to contact Sony customer support, and will be allowed to mail in their PSP to recieve a unit with a new screen."

The press release I read didn't say that they would automatically replace the unit if you sent it in, it said they would replace it if they deemed it defective. And since a few dead pixels is not a defect according to the manual, they could choose not to replace it. Of course, they'll probably just bite the bullet in order to avoid backlash (after all, they fix PS2s that are out of warranty)... but it's such a widespread problem, how in the world are they going to guarantee that the systems they ship back to you don't have the same problem?
In my experience, Sony either ignores the problem (the upside-down PS1 syndrome, which they still insist does not exist) or fixes it on the sly (the Disk read error, which 90% of the population would not send back to Sony because they never advertised it as a problem). It'll be interesting to see how they handle this.

I've owned several PDAs with high res LCD screens and only had the dead pixel thing once on a Clie. I exchanged it eventually when it became clear it wasn't going away. The cases of getting a dead pixel on a LCD computer screen or PDA do happen but they are fairly rare in my experience. However, it has been pretty common on the DS and seems to be very common on the PSP. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the cost cutting done to get the prices of those devices down.
I'm planning on sending in my DS since Nintendo says they will fix the dead pixel thing no question, but I'm probably not going to bother with the Sony one. They will say it is not covered and charge me shipping plus they can charge you a fee just for looking at the PSP.

Just to be clear, Sony had previously said it was up to them if the screen was defective, not the consumer. (ie > 6 Dead pixels) Sony is now saying, if it has defective pixels they will warranty it regardless.
Sony received quite a bit of bad press durning the launch due to the large returns stores were getting. There was even a report of Sony telling stores to refuse returns for dead pixels. As a result Sony changed their policy for now to take systems back regardless in an effort to clear the soild air around the PSP. This may not be the case after a few months, therefore, if you want it fixed, do it now.

If you're talking about this press release http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/03...s_6121092.html
it says
If a PSP is "determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the "repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or refurbished product at SCEA's option." Is there another press release that says you can return it even if you only have one or two dead pixels?

Played around with Video 9 this weekend.
For an animated half hour show (i.e., static backgrounds and flat colors), minus titles and credits (i.e., 20 min) -- framerate = 15, VBR = Q8, audio = 32, size = 320 -- produced a ~35 MB file that was very watchable. I would compare it to Tivo's "Basic" recording quality, with some general artifacting but no crawliness. Perfectly acceptable for PSP, especially since it makes for a nice change of pace in terms of mindless entertainment, and you only have to sacrifice about an album of music in favor of a TV show.
For a live program, such as a feature film, you have to go framerate = 30 or you'll get nauseous. VBR Q10 is artifacty and crawly. Q8 is just as artifacty when you compare still frames, but in motion it is less crawly than Q10 and therefore it is pretty acceptable, but I'd still compare it with streaming (Real) video. Q6 is noticeably better, and might be comparable to Tivo "Basic" recording quality, but if you can live with Q8 I think you could fit a feature-length film onto 200 MB, which is pretty appealing.
If I could find a legal, public domain film to encode, I'd give it a try 320x240 Q8 30fps 32-mono and see what it comes out as, but my guess is that one of the "Q7" pre-set configurations will be where most people end up since it will probably *just* fit on a 256 MB card. If you're especially bothered by mpeg artifacts, I'd suggest that you aim for one of the "Q4" configurations instead but expect the filesize to double. (For fixed bitrates, you can use the calculator and it's pretty accurate.)
In terms of time, for a 20-min source file, each pass takes about 10 minutes. So, for a variable-bitrate encoding you require two passes and probably takes 20 minutes, which works out to be a minute-per-minute process time. I don't know if this bears out over 120 minutes, and of course it's going to vary by machine, but there it is FWIW.

According to a technical support associate contacted by GameSpot, PSP owners who encounter a persistent and aggravating dead-pixel issue should contact SCEA's customer service line (1-800-345-7669) for instructions on how to exchange their unit after a week or two of using the unit. "We will work with you," he assured.

Ouch! Sony's 2 Gig Memory Pro Duo will apparently retail for $449! This is the High speed version (for comparison, their high speed 1 Gig is 199 while their non-high speed is 134), but that's the only one I see on sonystyle.com.
The Sandisk one will inevitably be cheaper, but I wonder how much it'll be... guess I'll spring for the 1 gig while waiting for the 2 gig to go down in price...
