I like Hot Shots, but it seemed to take forever for me to unlock other courses besides the first one. It took me a bit to realize that you had to play the challenges with stars to unlock courses. Least, I think.

i love that hot shots game, just as fun and easy to learn as the console version...on a different note, how the hell do i keep from staring at myself while i play, the reflection off the screen is nuts!!

i need to be like one of those vain pretty boys, maybe then i'd play more

I'm enjoying Hot Shots, but I'm amazed at my lack of ability to consistently hit perfect impact. I suck. I think my record is 38% or something like that.

Probably just the security update to prevent people hacking the PSP.

Anyone seen reviews for MVP Baseball yet? I have it ordered, but I'm still not sure on it.

I took mine to Episode 3 last night and played Tony Hawk with some kid in line with me. It worked great. People in line were amazed at the screen. A group of us wathed Spidey 2.

I was reading the gamefaqs boards, and according to the posts, the framerate isn't very good. It seems like most people on that board prefer MLB over MVP. I was really looking forward to this, but now I'm skeptical.

Kind of sucks about MVP if true. Both Tiger and now MVP seem like EA is just trying to cram a PS2 port straight into the PSP without really optimizing it for the hardware. Hot Shots and MLB on the other hand looked like Sony really designed them for the PSP.

I'll wait for Gamespot and IGN to review before cancelling. I can't believe the rosters are five months old though. No online roster updates either. I'm thinking sports on the PSP may need a at least a year to mature. Just about every third party game I have played on the PSP so far has seemed like a major rush job which I guess usually happens with new hardware. I had the same feeling about the launch DS software and EA put out some downright horrible stuff for the DS.

The thing that bugged me the most about E3 is the way the PSP got shuffled into the background. Sony really should have showcased this hardware more. There only ended up being 1-2 games out of the whole show I got excited about compared to the impressive showing the DS software got. Guess Sony is more worried about crushing Microsoft right now.

i just got mvp. and yes, it's true: the framerate is horrible!
the controls are sluggish too. playing mvp on gamecube via wireless controller felt faster when swinging. With the psp version, i have to retrain myself to swing earlier just so the button push registers. sucks. i think i'll trade it in for the mlb

Yikes, guess I'm cancelling this one for sure. Man, I currently have zero PSP games and few prospects that interest me. Hopefully, there will be something out soon I will want. In the mean time I've got to decide if I want to spend $40 on MLB for PSP or get a cheaper console version.

Have anyone updated their firmware to 1.5.1 yet? What are the benefits from 1.5,if any? I'm holding it off until I gather enough info before proceeding w/the upgrade.

I did just because I was curious to see how it worked. Honestly though the only reason for the update is to prevent people from hacking the hardware.

I just picked one up tonight with Tiger Woods and Resident Evil: Apocalypse. This thing is amazing! I am updating it right now via my wireless connection at home. Neat stuff!

Well, I broke down and wound up getting MVP, because I had some Toys R Us coupons and really wanted a new game. It's not nearly as bad as I expected it to be, after hearing all the complaints. I'm no expert of framerates, and I don't have MLB to compare it to, but MVP doesn't look bad at all. Also, I've played MVP 2004 and 2005 on PC, and I'm still running a Geforce 2, so maybe I'm just used to not-so-great framerates. I've only played one exhibition game, but so far it plays more like 2004 rather than 2005. One minor complaint I have about the game is the loading. After hitting a homerun, the game stutters a little bit to show the homerun animation sequence. It's not terrible, but definitely noticable. Also, the controls take some getting used to. Like peon73 said, you have to push the swing button a little earlier than you would think, but I don't think it's because the button registers late. It just seems like the ball gets to the catcher a lot faster than it should. The pitching meter is similar, where the cursor seems like it reaches the green zone faster than it should.

My friend is in LA now for E3 and has been looking for stores with the PSP in stock for about 3 days now, but can't find any. Does anyone know of any stores that have them? Maybe some place that's tucked away in a corner and hard to find? I need to know pretty soon cause he'll be coming back to Australia in a couple of days.

There are many places in LA which has them in stock. Tell him to check out the Gamerush aka Blockbuster video on Sunset and Virgil. The address is: 4470 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90029 Last time I checked, they had about 4+ systems left. Another place is Gamerush in Glendale, near the Glendale galleria.

Gamerush Glendale, Best Buy Burbank, Target Burbank. I'm seeing them everywhere around the Burbank/Glendale area. I'm sure they're available all over LA.

Sony PSP Movie Sales Strong

By Richard Menta 5/25/05

Two weeks ago when I reviewed the Sony PSP for its movie and music prowess I was stunned by the clarity of Spider-Man 2 as I viewed it on that unit's small, but sharp, widescreen display. The movie was delivered on Sony's Universal Media Disc (UMD), a new proprietary format that in several weeks Sony put into the hands of 1.2 million users. I said this in the review:

If UMD proves to be a smash hit one area it can affect is the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle going on it Hollywood right now as it would force the studios to commit resources to the smaller UMD format while they hedge on the two larger formats…if UMD movie and album sales achieve Sony's wildest dreams as a market force it will increase the risk of success for all later formats and delivery schemes.

Well, the numbers are starting to come in on UMD movie sales and the results are excellent.

Since the introduction of the PSP two Sony titles have hit the 100,000 mark in unit sales, Resident Evil 2 and House of the Flying Daggers. Both titles shipped on April 19th, hitting these marks within a month of release. All other titles are also selling well.

Hollywood has taken notice on these numbers and are all jumping in with titles that they feel will best play to the PSP's target audience. The only studio sitting out right now is Warner Brothers, whose competing mini-DVD technology has already been dropped by Paramount and Universal who previously agreed to support the mini-DVD format.

Hollywood does not want to get into any more of these format wars. We see what it is doing to the music industry with the Apple iTunes AAC codec versus Microsoft's WMA codec (with and without Janus technology) versus Sony Connect's ATRAC3 codec. Songs purchased on iTunes will not play on anything but an iPod, Connect tunes are limited to Sony players, etc.

Of course the MP3 codec is the only true standard, but the record companies refuse to acknowledge its existence because it does not contain Digital Rights Management (DRM) capabilities (no DRM is also what gives the MP3 format a competitive advantage).

The UMD's success will also affect Apple's plans to move into video media delivery. Despite continued denials by the company, many expect an iPod Video to appear in time for the Christmas holidays. Apple likes to impose its own standards and should an iPod video appear, the PSP/UMD success will pose a problem. This is true even if Apple decides online delivery of movies and TV shows are the way to go.

Right now there are over 70 titles available on UMD with hundreds more coming this fall as the studios rush to serve this new market. Paramount's Viacom buddies, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and MTV are also jumping on the UMD bandwagon announcing the release of several popular programs including Chappelle's Show and SpongeBob.

Should UMD titles line the retail racks this Christmas, there will be less room in stores to devote to other formats like Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Unless manufacturers can put a few million of these devices in the hands of consumers, the media industries have less incentive to print movies in yet another standard.
Looks like people are adopting to UMD pretty nicely. I like the last sentence of the article - nice little nod to the PS3.

Drop the prices on those things and I would pick a couple up. But, $15 or more is insane for these things.

Well, you get the AC Adapter and Battery no matter what package you get, but yes, the accessories they pack in for the Value Pack would cost you a pretty penny.
