Converted from yen, it's going to be about $37 for the single DVD, $49 for the UMD/DVD combo. You figure you half that amount and 18.50 is about the price it'd cost stateside for the standalone DVD and 24.50 for the combo. That's a pretty good savings- you're only paying about a third more to get the UMD with the DVD.

Ford is using to the "cool factor" of the PSP to push their new car, the Ford Fusion. (Look at the center pictures to see what I mean.)
http://www.fordvehicles.com/futurevehicles/2006fusion/

Offtopic:
Consequently, I got to check one of these out in person, my impressions from another board here:
Last Saturday I had the benefit of attending SAE's youth conference at Ford's Michigan Proving Grounds. At the event I got to inspect an open Fusion and a 6 cyl. Milan (In addition to riding in a GT at 170mph+ ). While not a journalist, I thought some people might like to hear my impressions.

Positives:
1. The car had a high level of fit and finish, especially when looked at next to the current Ford Focus. The car easily trounces any compact car, as it should, and would say its quality surpasses that of most japanese sedans under 25k.
2. The interior design was comfortable and well laid out allowing for comfortable reaching positions of the cars radio, controls, and accesories. (I'm 6ft tall 190lbs)
3. The back seat seemed to have an amazing amount of room even with the front seat in a comfortable postion as if I were driving.
4. Good trunk room.
5. Manual 5sp transmission shifted easily into place and carried itself well into the next gear. More smooth then a focus 5sp, more like the SVT's 6sp.

Negatives
1. (Minor detail)As always with the 2.3L engine, I feel the wire layout across the block screams "Cheap!" and really would like Ford to lengthen the wires to clean it up or throw a cover on it.
2. Once again Ford has failed to distinguish the Mecury version (Milan) from the Ford version enough. Just like the Sable/Taurus and the Escape/Marineer etc. the cars differences are mostly costmetic things like the headlights. The interior it nearly identical.
3. The Ford logo on the front is to large. The car really would look much nicer if it had been sized to just the middle chrome bar across the front of the car rather then screaming "Look at me ma, I'm a Ford!".

Neutral
1. As you likely know the car has an analog clock in the middle of the dash. While this does give the car a more sophisticated feel, I wonder why it is in this car. The Five-Hundred? Sure. The Milan? Great way to differeniate the Fusion and Milan. But the Fusion? If this car is aiming to be cool with the younger crown, an analog clock isn't a bad thing per se, but could have been executed better in some other way. (How about a place for an auxilary input for all us crazy kids with MP3 players?)

Note: This was at a Ford held event, the cars may not be final product, although I believe they are. I'd be happy to answer any questions I can.

Well crap, the photos keep changing... Sorry about that, they had a PSP shown in the cars center console on the dash... You might catch it because they rotate in promo photos with user submitted ones. sorry.

finally got some umd movies on ebay. The Grudge, XXX, Hellboy, Starship troopers., I am suprised in the quality of these. i thought spiderman looked good but it had a bleeding effect when the characters moved to fast ro something, and it bugged me watching the movie, but all the movies i have seen dont do this, and look really good even when the action gets fast theres no bleeding like you see in spiderman 2.

I've just been reading on the PSP hacking websites that apparently someone has built a homebrew PSP program that lets you run Lumines and Mercury right off the memory stick! Obviously, we can't/shouldn't talk about specifics here, but holy cow, I bet Sony is not happy right now. You better believe they're going to start pushing those new bios revisions with a vengence now!

Right now all I use my PSP for is checking out UMD movies. I just borrowed some dude at works House of Flying Daggers and watched it at my desk. I also recently picked up Hero and Napoleon Dynamite for work watching on top of the already owned Spiderman, Hellboy and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. I'm looking forward to more movies-Evil Dead and Ninja Scroll- than games but oh well. At least I've got my DS for portable gaming, Meteos rocks.

You can well imagine people being willing to pay the high costs of a 2GB memory stick if it means all their gaming will be free. You won't have to worry about UMD games updating your firmware if you never buy them. Seems like the Dreamcast all over again. Sony has some headaches ahead of them with the PSP.

The funny thing is, if you grab the version of lumines that has the music stripped, it's under 50 megs! I'm not sure why you'd want to play without the music, though.

It might not be so bad for Sony, though. It sounds like some of the first UMDs (like Lumines) don't bother checking to see if they are running from the UMD. Other games do, so they don't work. I think I read that Mercury does in fact check for a file on the UMD before it will play, but it's a common file that's on a number of games. So for instance, you need Untold Legends in your PSP to play Mercury off the memory stick. I'm sure all newer games will have more thorough UMD checks.

I see. That should be something easy for Sony to prevent. Well unless modchips for the PSP come out, but I doubt they would be very easy to install or practical on a handheld.

Where I used to bring my PSP out with a game in the UMD slot and amovie on the memory stick, I brought it out today with a movie in the UMD slot and games on the memory stick. Kind of weird.

I would assume they will be doing a mandatory firmware upgrade with every future PSP game. All that means is I will never purchase another PSP game. The only firmware upgrade I considered downloading was the one which allowed you to have a custom background...but not you can do it yourself. Sorry Sony.

Also, does anyone know if the American Coded Arms will have the firmware upgrade mandatory? I thought the Japanese version did?

I imagine coded arms will have it here too. But it's getting horrible reviews so I'd just stay away from it regardless.

Coded Arms is only going to require 1.5 according to IGN so there is still no worry about being forced to upgrade to 1.52. Yet, anyway.

I rented Dead to Rights and it came with a 1.5 upgrade, but I didn't download it and was still able to play the game. Guess some of the other games require it though.

All American PSP's launched with 1.5 as the firmware...having it again it kinda odd...maybe for the people that purchased a Japanese 1.0 model?

Yeah, that's weird. I tried downloading it and it was indeed the 1.50 I and all North American PSP's already have installed. Strange that it's a brand new game and they didn't put 1.52 on there.

Yea, but it is more than 1.99 to ship... they charge a 5.50 "handling fee" read the fine print, i dont trust that site.

Its not really a "trust" issue. I have done business with them in the past and I have always been very happy, however, you are absolutely right about there being a $5.50 handling fee, I appologize for not mentioning it.

IGN gave Coded Arms a 7.0:

http://psp.ign.com/articles/632/632225p1.html

I may have to pick this title up.

Closing Comments
Konami did a great job making their first-person shooter look great. I can't stress this enough – I love this game's sense of style. On the gameplay side, there are over 30 weapons in this game, once you consider all the upgrades. Everything from assault rifles, sniper rifles, pulse weapons and rocket launchers show up and they're cool killing tools. It's just that the square level geometry gets monotonous. I didn't mind it so much in multiplayer, but it's bland in single player. I believe there is still a lot that can be done here if Konami makes a franchise out of Coded Arms. As the first FPS games on PSP, this is a good starting point.

Well, I picked up Coded Arms yesterday and here are my thoughts after playing through the short tuturotial and 5 levels of the Ruins Area.

First off is control, which I find pretty good. I use control scheme "D" which maps movement to the left d-pad rather than the thumbstick. Looking is assigned to the right d-pad. The thumbstick is used to engage 2x binocs (UP), switch weapons (Left/Right) and reload (DOWN). Right trigger fires, left for jumping. The thumbstick is just too tiny for me to use for movement, but it's worth throw makes it ideal for switching weapons IMO.

I'm not sure why the reviews have been so harsh. If this were a PC game I might be able to understand. But as it is, this is made for the PSP. IMO, the game design fits perfectly with the idea of portable gaming. The way the game is designed you can play through a level or two during lunch or whenever you feel like a quick, fun diversion. Your not stuck trodding through overlong levels hoping to reach a save point, you can save at anytime.

Graphics are nice, and the enemies pretty detailed. Level design is very angular, but there are organic looking plants and structures that break up the "squareness" of it. I like the cool effect whenever you open a door to a new area...the graphics "woosh" away from you and form into the next area...pretty nifty. Plus, you get a map! You can see a small portion of it in your HUD, but you can access the full map via the start button menu.

So far I'm liking it. It seems that most reviewers aren't looking at this game as a PSP game, but bashing it for not being more "PC like".

So how intuitive is it to use the buttons as a second D-pad? That would seem to be hard to get used to....

Pretty easy for me, as I got used to it with just about any shooter on the Dreamcast (I still play MDK). I just couldn't use that tiny thumbstick, using both d-pads works best for me. There are 4 ready made control schemes plus the abilty make a custom setting to assign any function to any key.
