Re: What consoles are you buying this year? Monday Edition!
This is off the top of my head, so I might miss something...
Confirmed 1080p: Forza, NBA 2K, FIFA, Madden, Zoo Tycoon, Lococycle, Crimson Dragon
Confirmed 900p: Ryse
Confirmed 720p: CoD, BF4, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3
Unkown, but both rumored 720p: Titanfall, NFS Rivals

I thought I'd read that all of the sports games were 1080p. You've heard otherwise? Are publishers hedging around "native 1080p" and just calling them all 1080p whether they're upscaled or not?
Hell, they all look current gen to me except for NBA 2K.
I also forgot Madden above...added.

I think it's kind of amusing that so many people are still hung up on the 720P vs 1080p debate. In the grand scheme of things, it's not really going to make any difference to the majority of the public. Looking back at every console war, the more "powerful" system (Dreamcast, Xbox, PS3) didn't end up doing as well as the "weaker" console (PS1, PS2, 360). I don't see that changing with this gen either. Don't get me wrong, I like looking at pretty things too, but other factors matter to me more than that (controller preference, online infrastructure, etc). I'm extremely excited about both systems because I know they will both be fantastic and the next couple weeks can't come fast enough

The only similar situation I can think of is PS1 vs. Saturn, where PS1 was cheaper and had better hardware and came out at about the same time, but even in that case, N64 was waiting in the wings and was (in theory at the time) more powerful than both.
Edit: PS1 (not most powerful, but best hardware) and SNES did win their respective generations AFAIK.

The SNES, while remembered more fondly and more sought after by collectors, didn't its generation.

The PS3 overtook the Xbox 360 globally some time ago, currently standing at roughly 80.3m (PS3) vs 78.7m (Xbox 360).
Roughly a Wii U between them.
In just the US, the SNES outsold the Genesis by about 6m units (22m vs 16m), the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by roughly 17.41m in the US.

Maybe this has been addressed before, but are there any commercials for the new systems with actual in-game graphics featured in them? I see the same commercials over and over, but most seem to feature actors or filmed segments. Why not feature the technology?

The more powerful system has never been cheaper and has never been released at the same time. SNES, Xbox and PS3 all released well after their counterparts and were also more expensive.

The Xbox One commercial has brief glimpses of gameplay in them, but for the most part the two companies are leaving that stuff to the individual ad campaigns. They're selling you an idea, a potential thing you might like. Most console releases have been this way.

I'm pretty sure I would say the 3rd generation was since the NES dominated so much, wasn't even aware of a Sega system, nor that the Atari 7800 was part of the same generation.
As far as the launches itself for that gen... Sega screwed themselves my surprise launching in May with only a few retailers and alienating the rest.
The complicated hardware design did not help either.... but the systems were really different, right? Saturn specialized in 2D games, PS1 did 3D games.
2 separate system designs and graphics. PS1 became the cool hip system and had awesome commercials, Saturn was the arcade type console with some of the weirdest and worst commercials.

The standard Xbox One has climbed to #62 on the Amazon best seller list for the year, but don't panic everyone, it's still got a ways to go before catching the Sony PSP at #45.

If I had to pick a biggest beatdown, I'd probably go with the PS2.
Truth is, there's never been a situation like the one between PS4 and X1, so analogies with past generations are pointless.

Well, since the more powerful system usually doesn't "win", go go Xbox One!

PS4: #7 (day one), #35 (standard), #39 (controller), and #52 (BF4 Bundle)
X1: #10 (day one) and #62 (standard)
The surprise for me was the PS4 BF4 bundle moving all the way up to #52. They must have gotten the bulk of those Watch Dogs bundles.

I guess it's subjective but at that time Sony was known for TVs now they're known for video game systems, and Sega was known for video game systems and now they're known for Sonic.

I can understand past generations not using the in-game graphics so much, but aren't we at a point where people will be amazed by how far we've come? Or not yet?

I think there is a "dorky" quality to the commercials that are made up of in-game footage. The live action commercials have broader appeal.
Not necessarily my personal opinion, just why I think they do it that way.

Digital Foundry disagrees...
Xbox One Resolutiongate: the 720p fallout
Xbox One Resolutiongate: the 720p fallout
As the metrics emerge on key next-gen launch titles, it's clear that Xbox One is under-performing against its rival - not just according to the spec differential, but actually beyond the difference in raw numbers. Our Battlefield 4 Face-Off preview reveals a 50 per cent resolution boost on PlayStation 4 with no appreciable compromise in effects or performance in single-player gameplay, while Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin confirmed rumours that Call of Duty: Ghosts runs at native 720p on Xbox One, with 1080p a lock for PS4. Assuming uniform features and performance, that's a massive blow for Microsoft.
While Digital Foundry has yet to see either next-gen version of Call of Duty, our experience with Battlefield 4 demonstrates that you can easily see the visual difference between them. The Xbox One version holds up well given the gulf in resolution, but it doesn't require a pixel counter to tell that the PS4 game is crisper and cleaner either. At last week's Battlefield 4 review event in Stockholm, we noted that the resolution change from one version to the next was obvious to many of the press in attendance, with some even suggesting on-site that the PS4 version was operating at native 1080p when its actual resolution was 1600x900.
