Thanks!

Hmm, it appears that I have to buy the app by credit card rather than using Xbox credits, which I guess makes sense since it auto-renews. I think I'm probably going to do this, but since I'm not a heavy gamer, I might wait till something I'm DYING to play hits the vault, or enters the pre-release trial phase. Heck, it might take me months to get through the two Assassin's Creed games that came with my console.
Crap! I went out and bought $40 dollars worth of points cards only to find out you have to use a credit card. I sure wish I had know this before hand. With of the hacking into Xbox Live and the PSN, I'm not able to enter my credit card info.

For what it's worth, I don't recall XBox Live ever being hacked. Sony's PSN was actually hacked a few years ago and had account information stolen.

If you're just thinking of the Christmas day stuff, those weren't hacks.

The streaming thing is pretty huge. They also announced the Windows 10 upgrade will be free to users of Windows 7/8/8.1 for the first year.

EDIT: Also just announced that Fable Legends will be coming to Windows 10 as well as XB1, with cross-play between console and PC. I imagine this will happen with a lot of future games.

Wasn't there a hack a while back regarding FIFA and point cards or something like that?

I was almost expecting windows 10 would allow XB1 games natively. Meaning any digital XB1 game would work on a win10 machine. That would be awesome.

Streaming from the console is the first step.

The second step... I like the way you think.

Individual Xbox Live accounts were being hacked and used to buy and transfer FIFA in-game trading cards. There was no proof that there was any flaw in Xbox itself that was being exploited though.

I only vaguely recall something like that. A search about it brings up stories about it, but nothing conclusive or findings that Microsoft was actually hacked and it seemed to be attributable to basic social engineering.

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/xb...e-microsoft-s/

"Windows Live ID was not compromised. The FIFA '12 and other similar incidents are cases of social engineering or phishing, which are industry wide problems. Microsoft constantly audits its systems and reviews its processes in an effort to help protect customers from such issues," a Microsoft spokesperson told us.

With HoloLens being an "untethered" device (it doesn't require a PC/phone/tablet/anything to function), potential integration with Xbox One could be super easy, as it wouldn't eat up a ton of the CPU/GPU power. The thing has all the guts it needs built in. I'm not sold on the thing at all yet, but I think that's a smart move for MS.

YOU are the controller!

An in progress preview/hands on... it sounds kind of neat, and different enough from just your standard VR stuff to make it pretty interesting.

http://www.polygon.com/2015/1/21/786...buy-cross-play

Some select tidbits about Cross Buy and Cross Platform -

Some of Microsoft's other plans for cross-platform and cross-buy — meaning that owners of Xbox and Windows platforms can buy a game on one platform and access it on multiple platforms — sound like they're still in flux. And some of those decisions simply aren't up to Microsoft.

"We're the platform. We will enable what publishers want to do with their content," Xbox head Phil Spencer said in an interview today when asked about cross-buy support for games that span Xbox and PC. "I'm not giving anybody's content away to somebody else. That's not our role. But how you end up with the game on both platforms is going to be dependent on who's selling the game.

"We're going to let the publishers decide the business model that they have on their titles."
"You're going to see a lot more commonality in the gameplay and the experiences that people put together," he said of games that comes to Xbox One and Windows 10. "We did Shadowrun and enabled cross[-play] on PC and Xbox 360 and I think it was OK. I don't think it changed gaming when it came out but it was a good investigation of control input and fidelity, and I think you're going to see that same creative focus as this evolves to figure out which games are great for cross-platform play and which aren't. Resolutions between PC and console will be different in certain cases. Controllers versus keyboard and mouse is sometimes an issue that people sometimes get hung up on.

"My job on the platform side is to provide the tools and let developers figure it out."

Spencer said Microsoft isn't interested in demanding that developers support cross-platform play. Instead, it would rather enable "technology to make games great," and let developers make their own decisions. As for Microsoft Studios' games, he envisioned scenarios in which cross-platform play between Xbox and PC could work.

"You can imagine playlists that people are cool with just playing with their friends, like [Gears of War's] Horde mode," he said. "If you were on keyboard and mouse and I was on a controller playing PvE, you wouldn't care ... Or in PvP where there's a playlist that's controller-only, [keyboard and mouse]-only and cross-play — let people decide where they want to go play. In the end, some people are hardcore about the competition and some people just want to have fun playing together. And I want to enable both.

"The other thing I'm interested in that scenario is cross-platform chat. We have a lot of people that get into parties and just start chatting even though they're playing different games at the same time."

And regarding streaming from the PC to XBox One -

http://www.polygon.com/2015/1/21/786...pc-to-xbox-one

Microsoft is "really looking at" enabling streaming from a Windows 10 PC to an Xbox One, Xbox head Phil Spencer said following a Windows 10 event today.

Earlier today, Spencer took the stage at the event to reveal a Windows 10 feature that works in the opposite way, allowing streaming Xbox One games to any Windows 10 PC or tablet. Games must support the feature, which will be possible with Wi-Fi on a local network.

"People ask about the streaming in the opposite direction — can I stream from my PC to my Xbox? — and I'll just say it's something that we're really looking at," Spencer said. "This announcement is what we have, but if you think about that vision — my games are my games wherever I am, and I can play with whoever I want to play with — we want to be able to land solutions that are as native as the one we showed there. We just have to kind of work with the physics of time and try to work it development schedules."

The latter part shouldn't be too hard, Steam figured it out just fine and it works on shitty old laptops as the receiver.

Game of Thrones season pass is currently free to install if you buy (or already own) episode 1. Must be done from the console. Very likely a mistake, so hurry.

A lot of EA games for X1 are currently on sale. I'd still suggest getting EA Access instead, but if ownership is more your thing, here's the list

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare - $10

Battlefield 4 - $13.20 - Premium - $24

EA Sports UFC - $10

NHL 15 - $24

Need for Speed Rivals Complete - $15

Just Dance 2015 - $29.99

Another World - 20 Anniversary Edition - $4

Nba live $19.80

Titanfall $10, Deluxe $12.50

Peggle masters edition $4

DA: inquisition $35.99 and $41.99

I'm also tempted by Dragon Age but would rather it hit the EA Access Vault and then I would just subscribe to that.

If anything with DA:I, at least wait until it drops to $40 at Best Buy and buy it then with GCU. That won't be long and then you'll have a copy to sell when it goes into The Vault.

re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

Hey look! Firmware!

Xbox One Controller is Getting a Firmware Update

The firmware update provides the following two improvements:

Quick Connect. You can now connect a controller to an Xbox One console in less than 2 seconds, compared to 4 to 5 seconds previously.

Stability improvements. Microsoft says the firmware also provides a number of fixes that address issues submitted by customers and preview participants.
The second issue, stability, has been a major problem for me. I mentioned it here, and thought it was tied to my headphone adapter, but nope. All of my controllers were doing it, with or without the adapter, but on a completely inconsistent basis. Hopefully this is fixed now.

That would be fantastic but I live in one of those places that has no Best Buy. Not even a little close.

We used to have a Circuit City.

You're about a day late on that deal.

I've had that issue with one of my controllers but not the other. Glad to see they're addressing it.
