I wonder how many Mom's went to the store and said "Hmm, why would I buy him an Xbox One when I can get a PS4? Four must be the newest version."

I get this, but I disagree. Hard.
For one, I'm pretty sure you get about a month of warning. I'm sure someone has the exact number of days, but it's usually pretty generous.
Second, there's usually a discount on the purchase of the game, so if you were that invested in it, you could buy it and keep going. Or find a cheap physical copy.
Third... I mean... They don't call it a subscription service for nothing. Nearly every sub has some kind of rotating roster of content to go with the first-party core content, and there's never a hard guarantee of ownership or access to specific titles. That goes for everything from cable TV to Netflix to music streaming. Sometimes those contracts last years, and sometimes only a few months. If anyone feels disappointed or even fooled by this aspect, then I hate to say... subscriptions aren't for them.

That said, I genuinely do get the frustration, as there have been games that I wanted to play or even started, then said I'd get back to, only to find out it was leaving in a month, and I didn't make time to go back to them. But, I knew what I was getting into. I still have a couple achievements to get in Nier:Automata, so I'll probably end up buying that when I finally get the itch to getting around to it.

To be "fair", a normal NVMe 1tb drive runs about $150 from a decent brand. NVMe is not the same as a standard SATA drive.

Yeah, but I mean, that is what those 1 TB "drives" cost on PC as well.

As I told a friend of mine NVMe is just letters to me. It all about how much it cost, and thats too much.

Maybe take the time to learn what it is then?

I see the ultimate game pass on Xbox and MS.com coming in at 14.99 per month. Is there a way to grab it for the year?

Well yeah. I meant in terms of innovative offerings in customer/consumer friendliness or centricity.

Maybe I'm unusual - but if a game leaves, I generally realize I was probably never going to finish it anyway. I shift games and leave them unfinished much more often than I have a game pulled out from under me. There's enough new shiny that I haven't really felt the pain yet (though I certainly may in the future.)
I have seen notices in advance of a game being removed, I don't recall how obvious it was. It should minimally be on the game's page, as a bar on Gamepass, and if you've played it, MS should send you a message. (All those might currently exist.)

It does seem quite expensive. I know it's leagues better than platter drives, but still a tough pill to swallow. Early in 360 gen, I think, the additional hard drives seemed really expensive, then eventually prices lowered and more non-MS drives were released. If I bought an S, and considered getting one of these cards, I'd probably reconsider and upgrade to an X.

Not that I've seen recently, but there are frequently deals on 3 month codes for Game Pass Ultimate. Several places had 'em recently for ~$25, which averages out to a little over $8 a month.

I'm just saying that's a high price (to me) for storage, regardless of what it is. I also don't have data caps, and don't mind deleting/downloading when necessary.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I think it's fine and expected that the average person doesn't know why these SSDs (both the internal and expansion ones) are significantly more expensive than the USB3.0 SSDs they can buy and plug into the back.
My understanding is:
- Series X|S games will only play off the internal SSD or the custom expansion SSD. They will not play off of any USB3.0 SSD/HDD you plug in.
- ALL games (Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox) can be stored on ANY of these options: internal SSD, custom expansion SSD, or USB3.0 SSD/HDD
- Old games (Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox) can also run on ANY of those options.

The same (roughly) would go for PS5, with a few slight differences (PS5 will allow USB3.0 SSD game playback, but only with certain SSD types, yes?)

This stuff isn't intuitive for the average person. It should be more straightforward... like Smart Delivery

Looks like reviewers are getting real consoles rather than the shells?

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I have no issue moving games from the internal to my current external drives and back again to play them if they are Xbox Series X games.

I will probably get the Seagate drive when there is a sale and if I feel I need it.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

That's cool that you can basically plug and play your current external drive on your One to the Series X.

On the downside I didn't realize the expansion card was some proprietary thing they developed with Seagate. Seagate's quality at times is pretty low.

Woah. This is a game changer. You can preload games you have not purchased, so that if you have the disc version it is ready to play immediately.

I'm extremely excited about that idea. Hopefully there'll be a web app or it'll be added to the iPhone app once this functionality is out of beta.

You're probably talking about their spinning HDDs (and even that's overblown), but I don't think Seagate has many issues with SSDs.

So the external hdd is necessary to play games fully optimized?

Only if your internal ssd is full. The system comes with built in storage.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

This is great. All I’ll need to migrate are saved game data (which can be saved to the cloud), and any Gold games (which I paused the download for) that I don’t want to disappear. Any disc based games I can just install whenever. Sounds like I won’t even have to use my existing external drive to restore anything.

PS5 may be another story, but I’m hoping for easy transition of data.

Interesting, wonder how many pre-orders there were.
