So is Microsoft not going to try in making better games? I want competition between the companies because that’s always good for the consumers.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I mean he has to mean that they will still make great games but that they will not be Xbox exclusive, meaning they will also be on PC. Otherwise I don't get why you would just concede the console market as an also ran unless they are planning to get out, especially given the acquisition they are trying to do. It is true that they are not going to be as hyper focused on the console as a company as much as Sony or especially Nintendo will, but you can look just as far back as the wiiU to the switch to see what kind of turnaround can happen if you differentiate your service.

His point is clearer in-context: that they can be successful without being in first or even second place in the console market, and it’ll take more than a slate of amazing games for any upheaval in market share. The Xbox One generation was the wrong one to lose. People started to build digital libraries, those purchases are carrying over across generations, and users are getting more and more entrenched in those ecosystems.

And some of the editorializing in that embedded tweet was never said.

The mindset described in the Kinda Funny interview is actually pretty Nintendo-like: be #1 in your own race rather than #2 or #3 in someone else’s.

"I see it out there, I see commentary that if you just build great games, everything would turn around," he said. "It's just not true that if we go off and build great games, all of a sudden you're going to see console share shift in some dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation, where everybody built their digital library of games.

"This idea that if we just focused more on great games on our console, that somehow we're going to win the console race, I think doesn't relate to the reality of most people."

I get that, but they didn't even try. There are probably a lot of circumstances outside of their control that delayed all these games but man there is so little to differentiate the system as it is, so him phrasing it that way seems really discouraging, at least for single console households (and console warriors, but screw them anyway... )

I feel like they did, but they started in an awful position (underinvestment in studios; the disastrous Ballmer/Mattrick era), they relied too much on the same few core IPs, and even though they eventually invested heavily in studios, the timing was rarely advantageous. Like, they’d all either just put out a game or their next title was right around the bend, putting the next potential Xbox exclusive years and years away.

Sony definitely makes better exclusives, hell even Nintendo does, but that’s what I use my PS5 and Switch for. Every other game is Xbox.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Early days I first owned the Original XBox, had a PS1 & 2...and then grabbed the XBox 360 mainly like everyone else to play Halo and Gears of War, the two central cornerstones of that console back then. At that time the 'Talk" was ....if you want to play action/shooters, grab the XBox and if sports and adventure grab the PS3....sadly I view what's happened over at MS/XBox has done a 180°. They really don't have those "Cornerstones" Games they are their Flagship like Halo and GoW anymore......which to me is sad.....

There's been delays left and right but that's been across the entire industry be is exclusives or for all consoles. But right now if you look it seems that this one game is going to help M.S and XBox here or there, not 2-4, ONE. First it's all been all about Starfield being THE GAME for XBox but delay, delay, delay.....and then few months back all hope fell on Redfall...and guess what happened.....and now it's back to Big XBox Showcase and Starfield Showing in June with more promises....BUT, seems all this was the same song & dance last year....

I'm sure Starfield will be great but even though it's years away Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are Xbox exclusive. Those are the console sellers.

At some point they probably consider just saving them for the next console launch (if there is one). It worked for Nintendo.

I own both consoles from around launch so I have no idea, is it still difficult to get an Xbox Series X? I don't know how much "system sellers" late in a console's life really moves the needle.

Neither console is hard to get these days. Can walk in and buy them pretty much anywhere.

I just checked bestbuy.com. Xbox Series S are available, series x is all sold out (or are on preorder for the bundles). PS5s are available.

Target.com has series x listed but discontinued for shipping and at least in my area not available for pickup. PS5s are available.

Amazon has the Forza bundle but the regular series X is "Available by Invitation"

Strange. I've seen them locally. Looks like Amazon doesn't have the base console but they do have the Forza bundle in stock to ship.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Target has them locally for me, that's where I bought mine as well (using a 10% off coupon).

But yeah, the base model is a little hard to find right now, you can get the Forza bundle pretty much everywhere though from what I've seen. (all our local Targets and Best Buys have it in stock)

Amazon also has it, or pre-order the Diablo bundle.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I was more asking because I wanted to know if the supply chain issues are sorted out. I don't think the PS5s having (relatively) more availability is due to lack of demand, but I haven't looked up console sale numbers or anything.

It could be, or Microsoft is forcing bundles on people and holding back the base unit in their favor.

It makes some sense for a retailer to do that. It makes no sense for Microsoft to do this because they get all the money from digital sales, they don't care where the games are bought at (as long as it isn't used I guess) and they have to figure someone is not going to make a huge purchase like that and just not buy any games or subscribe to gamepass or whatever.

Forza is first party, any extra income is extra income, especially on a game most of us have via Gamepass.

X-Box we need to talk was a good thoughtful watch. I like how he said Xbox is not aggressive anymore and just letting things happen as they happen.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

Yeah, that was pretty interesting. Maybe a little too down on Starfield -- I think that game is going to be amazing, whenever it does come out. I don't need to know if it is locked at 30 FPS this early. But overall, I do agree that they've been pretty stagnant. And they absolutely should not have allowed Redfall to be released in its current state. They knew it was problematic, which has to be why they waited until the very last minute to send review copies - it was to mitigate the damage that an unacceptably low Metacritic score would do at launch. After an exclusive-free 2022, they needed 2023 to be better than it has for the company.
I was unaware that they showcase their Xbox games running on a PC. That really isn't acceptable.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

All this shit about Xbox makes me glad I have both. PS5 definitely kicks Xbox ass in the exclusives department. I’ve enjoyed every game I’ve tried on PS and they are just superb. I can’t even remember the last time an Xbox exclusive got me excited. Not even Halo: Infinite, sad to say. If it weren’t for RE4: Remake, I don’t know if I would use my Xbox. Except to watch AppleTV +, since it saves position of film or tv show if stop. Rather than FireTV which does not. I dare say I like the PS5 better than XBSX at this point. Can’t see it changing anytime soon.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

It's Forza Horizon 5 and Flight Simulator for me. Love those two. But otherwise, the exclusives have been sparse.
Not an exclusive but the Plague Tale sequel was a Day 1 Game Pass game that was very good.
That video reminded me I still need to check out Hi-Fi Rush.

Re: Xbox Series X - 11/10/20

I have always bought a new Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo console when they are released. Next time around I won't buy a Microsoft console. I couldn't tell you the last time I played my XSX. It's sad because I loved the first Xbox and the Xbox 360. I don't know what happened with the Xbox One. IMO, they went to a very friendly, ease to use menu of the 360, to a sometimes confusing until you get the hang of it XB1.
