the extra footage is not much longer, some extended bits of gunshots and carnage to existing scenes that were trimmed to get an R. The unrated one in the boxset, however, is the only version available that has special features (non-Criterion that is). A Verhoven commentary (different from the Criterion one), featurette, etc.

So if you want the unrated version in anamorphic widescreen with extras plus 2 lesser movies (#2 is okay, #3 generally is regarded as a failed attempt to make the series more kid-friendly) then spend the $20 on the boxset. If you're just looking for the flick and don't care about the extras, the single disc is also anamorphic.
