St. Louis Park BL has been restocked with mostly the same titles I picked up last time. I did grab "Brother John" and the Mill Creek boxes "Cult Classics" and "Burnt Rubber".

Picked up Returner(2004) for $2 today. 80 years in the future..........I just couldn't resist for 2 bucks. Looks Japanese.

My Big Lots had a NEW set of DVDs then when I first stopped by.

Just a FYI.

I love Returner, and it's a steal for only $2! There's some nice extras on the disc as well.

Some of the DVDs at Big Lots really blow me away, and people would be insane to pass them up. I saw The Man Without a Past (OOP now also) at Big Lots when I bought the DVDs I mentioned in my last post, but I didn't pick it up because I just bought it from DVDPlanet no more than a month or two ago for around $7 used.

Hit the East Modesto Big Lots after work.

The Mill Creek sets are all GONE.

But thanks to this forum, I think I was first to get to the new batch of Columbia $2 titles as they were all stacked in four neat and even little rows.

Picked up:
Big Girls Don't Cry
The Devil Commands
Happy Birthday to Me
Beijing Bicycle
The Matinee Idol / Frank Capra's American Dream
Mr. Sardonicus (which I forgot I bought last year at a DDD sale)
The Sea Is Watching
Subway

Amongst Those I Left Behind:
3-Way
Bon Voyage
Brotherhood Of Satan
The Prisoner
The Red Dwarf
The Vertical Ray Of The Sun

*The Prisoner (1990 SE, also known as "Jackie Chan Is The Prisoner")
*The Red Dwarf
*Respiro
*Returner
*Ride Beyond Vengeance

Mill Creek's "John Wayne 20-Movie Pack" is a pretty good bargain for the price.

It's the only John Wayne collection that I know of that contains all sixteen of the Lone Star/Monogram westerns he made between 1933 and 1935.

Print quality certainly varies but each film has its original soundtrack (unlike the 1980's Sony VHS tape releases of some of these Lone Star films, which substituted horrible, inappropriate electronic synthesizer scores for the original 1930s music).

The set also contains "Winds Of The Wasteland" (an early Wayne Republic film); "Hell Town" (a Paramount western, also known as "Born To The West"); "Angel And The Badman" (a nice print of one of Wayne's best westerns); "McClintock" (a faded, fullscreen print); and a bonus documentary, "The American West Of John Ford" (also with faded color - hosted and narrated by Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda).

Unlike some of the recent 20-movie sets by Mill Creek which have rather large and obtrusive logos (appearing as many as four times in the lower right-hand corner of the movie), this 2005 John Wayne set had no Mill Creak logos in any of the films I've watched.

In addition to Big Lots, Walmart also carries the "John Wayne 20-Movie Pack" (for $5.50). All of our local Walmart Super Centers have the set and our neighborhood Walmart store recently began stocking it as well.

I haven't seen Mill Creek's issue of the 3 John Wayne Mascot serials ("John Wayne: The Early Years") but I had picked them up in the Platinum Disc Corp. versions. They're dated but still fun and full of action. "The Three Musketeers" (1933) features a very young Lon Chaney, Jr. (billed as Creighton Chaney) in the first chapter (I don't think that he and John Wayne ever acted together again in another movie).

Mill Creek has also issued an "John Wayne Ultimate Collection" which is a 7-disc set containing both the "John Wayne 20-Movie Pack" and "John Wayne: The Early Years," but it is priced about double what you will pay buying the two sets separately at Big Lots.

Thanks for the kind words Auto - just trying to help out where I can. I've updated the list. I had to remove the links to dvdempire.com because it was causing problems when editing.

I started up The Unofficial "Big Lots" Exchange Thread in the Exchange forum, if anyone is interested in trading for titles you have been unable to locate at your local stores.

I hope someone who owns Tube, Monsieur Ibrahim, and/or Beijing Bicycle takes advantage of it.

Looks like the 2d wave of Columbia Tri-Star titles is over. I visited my usual couple of stores today and both had a bunch of new studio DVDs for $4.00 each. I *think* it was First Image or somesuch. The only title I can remember was "Tornado", but that turns up as a made-for-tv movie. I passed on everything.

Has anyone found any of these bargains at any Pittsburgh area Big Lots? I've looked for them at a few stores but have come up empty handed.

Let's hope for a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, etc. wave.

I'm just afraid that BL will realize that these are selling well and jack up the price.

At one of my stores there were still some $3.00 titles leftover from the 1st slew (ie: "The Alarmist"), and we've all seen the same $4.99 stuff gathering dust. If BL is paying attention, they should see the price point for DVDs is $2.00. The many new $4.00 titles I saw today will probably take a long time to move. Then again, it's certainly related to the amount the chain has to pay the distributor.

You may be right. I remember one BL I went to had several of the known $2 titles without any price. On my next visit I saw those same titles marked $4.99. Go figure.

BTW, how many horsey movies have you seen? They must have millions of those

Yea, all gone at my store. Returner was my last score.

FYI, they did the same thing with some of the titles. I.E. starting at $2 and then they jacked them all to $4 - not so much of a deal then.

List Update!

NiceGuyJoey found a new title on the list What To Do In Case Of Fire

Yesterday I hit the BL by my house. This place hasn't had much since this all started, but yesterday they've added quite a few titles that have already been found at other stores.

I'm starting to add non-anamorphic and 1.33:1 to the list. This might help when deciding. I found Homicidal yesterday and saw that it was full screen - what a shame!

FYI, out of the 385 titles on the LIST, we've found 167!

Yes, they were already on the list, but What To Do In Case Of Fire is a new find as far as I know.

I hit two Big Lots near me last night, one in Seekonk Mass., the other in Swansea Mass, and found quite a few of the $2 titles that have been listed here. Probably about 50 to 75 different ones.

Ken Cline.. Dancer, Texas Pop. 61 is a known find that isn't bolded on your list. I found it about a month ago and think someone else mentioned finding it also.

Thanks again for the very helpful list.

Pop. 81, actually. Not a bad little film, either...I saw it theatrically and thought I was getting a great deal when I found it at Wal*Mart for $7.50 over a year ago.

I went to my local BL today and while they still have plenty of DVDs, they don't have anything new that I don't have yet. Then again, it's only been a week since I bought five new ones, so I can't complain.

There are about five or six titles that I've been looking for but I've never been able to find there.

I thought it was fairly decent also.
