I really think Abrams will have a good vision and I can't wait to see what he does.

Winona Ryder joins 'Star Trek'
Actress to play Spock's mother in Abrams film
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Ryder

"Star Trek" is beaming up Winona Ryder.
Paramount Pictures and director JJ Abrams have set Ryder to play the Vulcan mother of a young Spock (Zachary Quinto).

Scripted by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the film revolves around the Starfleet Academy days of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. Chris Pine has been set to play Capt. Kirk, Simon Pegg will play Scotty, Karl Urban is Dr. McCoy and Eric Bana will play the villain, Nero.

Ryder recently wrapped "The Informers," a Gregor Jordan-directed adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, and the Geoffrey Haley-directed "The Last Word."

She is in pre-production on the Rebecca Miller-directed "Private Lives of Pippa Lee."

I guess her plan is to single handedly ruin every Sci-Fi franchise I love.

Holy sh!t -- I'm sensing a cinematic disaster on the horizon. Vulcan mother? Maybe Paramount will give Kirk a Klingon father. Idiots!

I'd like to see how much longer Trekkies can continue to nitpick their own series and then bitch about why no one watches Star Trek anymore.

Perhaps it wasn't the lack of strict adherence to continuity that led to Enterprise's demise, but rather the lack of quality storytelling, the mind numbing pace of episodes, the wooden acting, and the pompous self-aggrandizing of the human race.

Really, I'd like to know how you all managed to see this movie, and evaluate it already, when it is still in the development phase.

Regarding the Ryder casting, my guess is that the press release said that she'd be playing Spock's mother, and the reporter made a leap to conclusions from there.

Well, I like Winona Ryder quite a bit, so hopefully she'll do well in the role. Actually, I'm far more psyched about the casting of Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike. I think Greenwood has the gravitas to carry off the role, much as Ray Liotta would have. The advantage he has over Liotta is that Liotta often comes off as the same type of character, so you always view him as Ray Liotta, no matter who he's playing. Bruce Greenwood has established himself as a versatile character actor who is able to immerse himself in the role so that you view him as the character and not as the actor.

OMG, I kept reading VULCAN mother and lost it. Glad she's just his mother. Whew!

Enterprise's "lack of strict adherence to continuity" and "lack of quality storytelling..." both came from the same source: Berman and Braga.

I don't think it's completely out of line for fans to be concerned about this. Besides, there's always the few that will over-react to anything. And the Variety article? Does seem kinda sloppy as they are a trade paper. I'd expect that kind of mistake from a local smalltown newscaster just reading a summary off the wire, but you'd think someone would have caught that at Variety.

All the evaluating that's been done so far seems a little intense because they're recasting well known and loved characters. The filmmakers need to take that extra step to get it right. I'm sure there'll be some fudging of the history that will piss off a few, but in the end will be inconsequential. But if they were to do something like make Kirk gay, it would just be wrong because that's not who Kirk is. I fully expect this new actor to bring new dimensions to the character of James T. Kirk, but he must still remain within the established ones in order to remain believable.

Speaking of sloppy reporting, you notice that half the features say they're in Starfleet Academy, and half say they're recently out or on an early mission? Complete guesses, all.

Not really, look at Wrath of Kahn. Cadets on a training mission. Not too much of a stretch if you ask me.

Hemsworth, Collins join 'Star Trek'
Actors on board for J.J. Abrams feature
By KATHY LYFORD, KATHY LYFORD, TATIANA SIEGEL

Chris Hemsworth and Clifton Collins Jr. have joined the cast of Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek."

Hemsworth will play Captain Kirk's father, George Kirk. Collins will play Ayel, the cohort and general to Nero, played by Eric Bana.

The duo joins the previously cast Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Bana and Winona Ryder.

Lensing began last week.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci wrote the script about the Starfleet Academy days of the crew of the Starship Enterprise.

Hemsworth just wrapped the indie feature "The Cache," opposite Sean Bean.

Collins' credits include the upcoming indie features "The Perfect Game," "Horsemen," "Sunshine Cleaning" and "Still Waters." He just booked a supporting role in Relativity Media's "Brothers," opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire.

You must really hate Tyler Perry to allow one scene (which is as much as he's apparently in it) stop you completely from going to see the movie. Ah, well.

I could care less if the guy who created Diary of a Mad Black Woman is in 1 scene. I'm a hard core Trekkie and will definitely be in line to see this next Christmas.

Holy cow! 1 year until this comes out!!
