It does seem a bit odd that Abrams would include someone as talentless as Perry in his movie, though.

Considering I don't even know what the "real" Perry looks like, I'm guessing a cameo will (for me) go largely unnoticed.

A year yet?

I'm kind of stunned that the original cast members who are still alive aren't in it. Besides Leonard Nimoy.

So if Nimoy is in this film, I assume he must be telling a story about his early days with Kirk and the rest of the crew.

Shatner really wanted to be in this film, but Abrams said no.

Given the limited rumors on the plotline, my earlier thoughts (post #218) still work pretty well. I'll put the whole thing in spoilers, even though it's a mixture of a rumor and my thinking....

Spoiler:
It's believed the opening will take place in the 24th Century, likely on Romulus. Spock, who has been on Romulus since we last saw him, learns of a plot by Eric Bana's character (who's playing the baddie, a Romulan) to use the Guardian of Forever to "erase" Kirk from history. For a reason I can't quite figure out yet, an alternate reality is formed resulting in the new cast. It would afford the opportunity for Spock (Nimoy) and Spock (Quinto) to meet.

More exciting than "campfire" stores over marsh melons, no?

From scifi.com:

MTV.com reported that the first teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek film will be attached to Cloverfield, which Abrams is producing and which hits theaters on Jan. 18.

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves has seen the trailer and told MTV.com that "it's amazing, and it looks pretty incredible."

Reeves added: "I thought 'Well, this does look completely different and new.' But while having all the stuff that will make fans of Star Trek still feel fulfilled."

Reeves, a longtime associate of Abrams from their days on TV's Felicity, added that he has seen some footage from the top-secret Trek movie.

"I've seen little bits of the movie, too, and I feel that way as well," Reeves said. "He's doing an amazing job. It's very exciting. It's not your grandfather's Star Trek, that's for sure." Star Trek is slated for release on Christmas Day 2008.

Caught the teaser last night. There's not much to it, but what's there is very effective.

The nacelle caps of the original TOS enterprise did look as though something inside of them was spinning, so perhaps that's what those "turbines" are.

If you take TOS and the movies as any indication we're looking at something between TMP and TWOK.

However, since Enterprise introduced us (or reintroduced us as the case were), to the Aztec pattern, then I'm not as confident in my original statement.

I hope my first statement is correct, rather than something pre WNMHGB or post TOS/pre TMP.

Now I'm really confused. I looked at the bigger picture, and either I have no clue, or my first statement is more accurate.

It looks like uncovered plasma scoops are there, but at the same time it looks like it has the upgraded constitution class nacells.

Is it me or does it look like this ship (NC-17?) is being assembled in a terrestrial environment. Note the smoke and HD crane.

Rumor is that it is built . . .

Spoiler:
at area 51. UGH. yeah . . . supposedly Roddenberry said it was built in San Francisco and assembled in spacedock.

This all comes from my reading of AICN.

The trailer written out, spoilered, for those of you that want to read it before seeing it this weekend:

Spoiler:

Here’s the “Star Trek” trailer description. Hope you can use it.

Slow Paramount logo.

Bad Robot logo.

Black, suddenly some sparks (very saturated [with] Michael Bay-looking cinematography).

We hear an old NASA radio countdown: “30 seconds and counting.”

Close up of a timeless guy with goggles leaning down doing some wielding and sparks flying around.

He lifts his googles. Slightly futuristic head covering. It’s not a space suit, by the way.

The dude leans down and wields some more. He’s standing on big metal.

“From director J.J. Abrams” (blue font with a nice lens flare).

Some Kennedy speech about space flight: “The eyes of the world now look to space.”

People walking around the saucer section. The wielders are everywhere – showing size.

We hear: “The eagle has landed.”

Huge overhead shot pans across [and] suddenly [shows] what looks like miles of scaffolding underneath.

Title: “The future begins”.

Really impressive shot from … people all over the ship and you can see a huge industrialized city or shipyard in the background. It’s being built on Earth [rather than] in space.

Neil Armstrong: “One small step for man…”

Camera slowly cranes up over the whole saucer section.

Then we hear Leonard Nimoy’s line: “Space. The final frontier…” and the familiar “Star Trek” theme horns.

The shot continues [and reveals] the writing on the top of the saucer – “U.S.S. Enterprise” – and these huge aircraft-like warp engines in the background. Technically, the first reveal of what we’re seeing.

Just the Starfleet log (no title).

Title card: “Under construction”.

“Christmas 2008”

Honestly, I don't care if they retcon where the thing was built. I could care less.

The red part pretty clearly rotates now in the updated TOS episodes. I think it was always meant to, but it wasn't as clear originally (the red looked washed out originally).

It's pretty clear there.

That rumor, and many of the other rampant online rumors, has been completely shot down by the script writer:

How can a simple text description give me chills and a boner? Now I'm even more psyched to see Cloverfield.
