That's the problem, they did.

If that is really what it looks like that will be a MAJOR roadblock for me to accept this new Trek and I'm sure I won't be alone.

Seriously, WTF?

I understand changing the actors, they have to.
And I understand changing the bridge and the overall look to bring it to the current standard of SFX and what is futuristic.

But you don't F*** with the ship design!

Specifically the "neck" is halfway down the body.

The nacelles look way out of proportion and way too "moviey" like they put bulges and curves just to change it. It looks like a hideous bubble car, like a later model ford taurus or something. And why are they attached way at the front?

The engineering section is WAY too short and the indentation in the aft dorsal side takes up half the ship.

At least they got the saucer section right. Well that's the only thing they got right.

The ugliest ship in all of Trek hands down.

This is way worse then any of the transformer redesigns.

Now that is how you design a ship. That is a thing of beauty. The design was so successful that they could actually spend 5 minutes of ST1 just going around her showing her off.

Dear lord, I hope Star Trek TMP is not the barometer of quality that this film is being held up to.

tanman,

Despite all the negativity around the first Star Trek movie, everyone do agree that the model of the Enterprise designed for the movie was truly a thing of beauty--it better be considering how physically big the model was.

I agree with tanman. In fact, whenever I get a projector setup (years away at best) I plan on demoing the system with that STMP clip (probably the best part of the movie).

Wow. They really screwed up the look of the Enterprise - and they just didn't have to.

Looks like I'll wait for the DVD on this one. Rehashing and re-casting was bad enough, but changing the history of the thing (as to when these guys first met and served together), and drastically changing the look of the Enterprise makes this thing a, "No sale," for me. At least theatrically.

LOL at the fanboy hysteria. I hope Abrams pisses on the entire franchise, because I'm buying tickets to the first midnight showing just to watch nerds cry.

The first time I looked at the shot of the new enterprise, I didn't think much of it.
Now, after comparing it to the original for a couple of minutes, I hate it the new look. It's far too different from the original. Could Abrams not have been bothered to even paint the NCC-1701-A on the bottom?

WHYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! JJ ABRAHMS MUST DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! WAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! STAR TREK IS RUINNED!!!!!!!!!!!! WAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! MY LIFE IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS WILL NEGATE ALL OF THE OTHER MOVIESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY COLLECTIONSSSSS ARE MOOOOOT!!!!!!

Last I checked, weren't more than half of the Star Trek movies crap? And now we're getting so much whinning over a picture of a ship (which most of the population couldn't tell the difference between anyway)

And I don't care how much these Trek nerds complain over the internet. 99% of them will still be there opening day of the movie. And the other 1% will be grounded.

I have been cautiously optimistic about this project, the uniforms I love and the bridge I've been so-so about. The clip descriptions set me on edge, because there's so many details that just seem so odd, but that ship design is just not good. The engineering hull is too small and the neck attaches too far back, and the nacelles look like they've been "hot-rodded". There's been plenty of fan designs of what an "enhanced" TOS era Enterprise could look like, and they looked good. The same basic shape, just better and more reasonable detailing.

I think they need to stop beating around the bush and call a spade a spade. This is a reboot, which I'm technically okay with, because I can accept a whole different continuity more easily than I can even attempt to shoehorn this into the accepted story, even taking into account
Spoiler:
the time travel reset button aspects
.

Please don't lump me in with the whiners, I've been open-minded about this project from the start. I'm even okay with the Star Trek Remastered episodes, mainly because they kept the original concepts in mind but just fleshed them out.

I think the Enterprise 2-parter In a Mirror, Darkly proved to me you can show the older styled uniforms, bridge and ship designs in a more modern series and it would still work.

I prefer the fan-art versions that were floating around the web a few months ago:

From Wallpaper

From Wallpaper

These look like updated versions of the TOS Enterprise, whereas the official version looks more like 1701-D and USS Excelsior had a child.

Unless the story somehow is somehow tightly coupled to the look of the Enterprise, I don't give a shit if they put tin foil on a paper plate and hang it from a string.

^^ That second on is very neat!

Heck, for the most recent Batman they should have just used some felt fabric and glue to stick some construction paper on for ears. As long as Batman is kicking some villain to jail it doesn't matter if he looks like a 6 year old in costume for halloween!

But Batman's look is important to the story as it needs to intimidate villains. I have a feeling that where the neck attaches to the body or the size of the nacelles or whatever the fuck people are on about has no bearing the Star Trek storyline.

Funny. But guess what. You're in a star trek thread. There will be star trek fans talking about the movie. Shocker I know. Yeah there are going to be a lot of fans upset with the redesign of the ship. But speaking for myself I never said the whole movie was going to be horrible and I most likely will see this in the theaters. So let us whine about the redesign I never said it would affect the quality of the movie. It's just a terrible design but it won't really affect the quality of the movie.

As long as JJ worries about making a good movie I think any inconsistencies will be forgivable.

And yes I already told my mommy that I'm going to see this so I won't be grounded. Hopefully she won't change the locks to the basement when I'm gone.

I don't remember anyone saying that it had any bearing on the storyline or the quality of the movie.

Also, I hope that Abrams and the cast call the fans "Trekkies" in as many interviews as possible. That ought to really rile them up!

"Call us 'Trekkers' because that's a much more mature and cool label!"
